Does anyone miss Earth & Beyond?

While I never played that game hardcore, I always enjoyed starting it up.  Loved the idea of just being an intergalatic trucker (i.e., transport ship) and shipping needed items from galaxy to galaxy.  The game had a cool feel to it and seemed like space.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who misses it.

i remember playing it in beta and liking it somewhat. just never had the chance to really get into it for various reasons.

wish it was still around so i could now at least try it.

I was in the beta for a long time.  By long I mean its the longest beta I remember.  I in fact still have a tshirt I got for doing a certain stress test.

Earth and Beyond with a scene that we got to vote on for the shirt.  Then the words "I was there first".

I loved the game just was a bit small.. and EA like most companies never finished it.  Well they never really financed it or advertised it either but it had a good community.

I actually found this post funny because last night I was doing a search for Earth and Beyond... and came across a post that mentioned the following...

    http://forum.eagames.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=21052

Now the person that linked the post said they were probably reading more into this than they should... but I don't think I've ever really seen EA or anyone who works for EA comment in this "positive" a manner.

    *edit*

I wanted to add in... The post at the start of that link is from March 27, 2006.

With an EA Forum Admin responding March 28, 2006... which was probably just funny to me since it was actually this year... and within the last day or two... rather than from 2005 or something ;p

I miss this game. It was my first mmo.. popped my cherry.. lol.  I thought they had a good game going.  But I belive they pulled the plug due to low subscriber base.  Always seemed busy to me.. alot busier than swg now days.  image Here's to dreams of an EnB pt. 2!

Electronic Arts. It's run by calculators. The prolly saw more money in redeploying the programmers for Battlefield 2004569.

Well, I never had the chance to play it, but I've heard a lot about it. Apparently the fans of the game were pretty hardcore. I say this because EA has made public statements that they will not be bringing the game back, so some fans contacted them about buying the license. EA stated "no", so they decided to emulate it based on old packet logs.

I'm fully aware we do not discuss private servers here, but I wanted to bring up that point about the dedication on the fans.

The only more hardcore fans I've met are the Shadowbane fans, as many people in the forums are proposing a gathering at Ubi's office in Quebec City or Montreal, and baning them. Basically, in the game, to attack a city, you need to place a bane stone, which is essentially a large boulder. While a rock one isn't feasible for putting down in front of their offices, there's talk of a paper mache on, painted like the original box for Shadowbane.

Anyways, sorry to go off topic, just wanted to give you a comparison for hardcoreness ;)

Actually the link I gave where the EA Admin on the UK forums gave an answer on the 28th.  I found as one of the most honest answers ever.

more or less... I will forward this on but you may not fully understand how many subscribers it takes to finance a MMO World... and E&B has been out of the picture for a while.

To me it doesn't get much more honest than that.  If there were more than enough people to pay for it and make a profit... it could happen but if there isn't obviously it won't.

As to the part about "buying the license".

There was a series of post on one of the EB Fansites from a guy that was in talks with EA.  What it came down to was them asking for around $2 million (he didn't have that much financing but somewhat close) and...

They wanted someone with proven ability to market the game.

They would get some payment for each box copy sold.

More or less they wanted someone to do what they failed to...

    Advertise

    Successfully market

Have the proven ability to run the servers

and pay them a cut of sales.

In a round about way it was saying NO ... because nobody is really going to agree with all that the guy said they asked for.  But they did say if you can meet this criteria then... yes.

As sad as that statement is, I totally agree. They have to go where the money is, at players expense of course.
