I feel like a lot of games/movies/media in general gets a harsher score/reviews when they hype it up and people start following the game like they're ex girlfriend that burned them.. My approach is low expectations for everything.. Sure i'm a pessimist but w/e it works for me. Just curious as to everyone's approach to media/games/movies. What works for you guys? Does my approach work for you? I need answers

For example, I'm a star wars fan. I get over-hyped for all new star wars films and games, regardless of what the media is saying or what the reviews are. Its something I can't really control, its just part of being a fan.
I don't let this cloud my thought process when it comes to reviews or expectations. For example, SW:TOR, I was massively hyped for the game despite it being under EA's control. I even got into a closed beta 1 year before release and saw that it wasn't very good. I was still hyped. Even though I knew the world building was shit, the stories lame and the gameplay forgetable, it was still star wars! So, I was hyped despite low expectations.
When reviewing, you should never review in comparison to expectations. Reviews should come from a common baseline. For example, I absolutely love the film "13th Warrior". I love the vikings, the story, the setting, everything about it really. But, despite it being one of my top 5 films of all time, I still wouldn't rate it that highly because there are serious problems with quality and acting.
As with all things though, research is your friend. If you only expose yourself to hype, you either end up believing it or dismissing it, but either way your expectations are going to be unrealistic. Do your research, become more informed and then your expectations will be more accurate. For example, the Transformers movies. I saw the trailers and thought they looked really good, so had high expectations. I then did a quick bit of research (imdb), saw the cast list and saw Michael Bay was involved and so, naturally, reduced my expectations.
Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.
