    do you have to have met people in RL to be friends?

    if thats the case i have very few friends at all.

    To me a friend is someone you share stuff with, on a semi-weekly basis, in a somewhat private setting, be that online, on the phone or in RL.
    That's OK if that's how you define "friend."  My trouble is "online communication" lacks the important body language that accompanies face to face interaction.  That's just my personal take on it.

    Most friends made in my first MMO, AC2. Then I realized not all female toons were played by females and the will to socialize dropped drastically.

    It probably will get even more confusing for you when you realise that not all male toons are played by males either :p

    Everquest.  Played it the longest & made the most acquaintances.  I don't say friends because a friend is someone you meet with regularly in real life & talk to in person.

    This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

    everquest. the best mmo community i have ever been a part of.

    i made a lot of friends on bnet during my D2 days as well, even though that community was toxic overall.

    Lineage 1 is my childhood MMO. I spent 6 years of my life playing (starting at the age of 12) and stuck with that MMO due to the competitive nature and difficulty. You don't often see MMOs with leveling grinds of .0001% per monster kill -- taking 30 days of endless grind to level up once. It was shut down in North America in 2011. 

    League of Legends is the type of game where you'll actually meet others and continue playing with them. If you're good at the game, people will kiss your ass and never leave you alone. It's very social, but also stressful to the point that you'll break furniture or scream at others if you lose high elo ranked games. 

    MMOs have lost social nature.

    Realm of the Titans - a little-known moba that didn't make it past open beta weekends in the west. This is where I've made my only cross-game online friends. Good times.

    LotRO by a large margin. 

    Loads of group content at launch, largely skill-based rather than gear based, very mature community. Most players were just in the habit of pugging all the time so you were always meeting new people. Game also had in built voice chat for groups, which made pugging and getting to know people much easier. 

    Sadly, by the time I left most new content was solo and all the old zones had been revamped to be solo, so that spirit of grouping up and working together had largely been lost. 
    This ^^^. Lotro was very social. I loved the group quests. In game voice chat was huge as well, you joined a group and just started talking to people and often when the quest was done people would stay in group to finish conversations. I have so many fond memories of that game. But of course once F2p came, then the game became a solo fest. The heart of the game died.
