Why Oblivion should be on the Top MMORPG list.

MaeEyeMaeEye Member UncommonPosts: 1,107

1. Because I feel like I'm actually getting a real MMO experience playing this game.

2. I get more freedom than any MMO that is out there right now, or ever will be out.

3. Because WoW doesn't have SHIT on Oblivion!

4. When you quit a MMORPG to play an Elder Scrolls game, that shows something (you know who you are ;) )

Keep the list going

Total time played: 9125 Days, 21 Hours, 29 Minutes, 27 Seconds
Time played this level: 39 Days, 1 Hour, 24 Minutes, 5 Seconds

    5. Because it's just so good

    6. Because I quit EVERYTHING to play it (except I played battlefield 2 a bit last night)

    7. It really does feel like you are accomplishing more in 5 minutes in Oblivion than a month in most MMORPG's

    8. Because Stone Cold Says so!

    It's not multiplayer ::::12::

"DAMN! This is some sweet loot! :D Hey, check thi... oh wait NPC. Ah maybe you, look at what I... oh wait also a NPC. Alright, lets go hunt down some Alliance ^^ want to test my new gea... what? No Alliance?! gg /logout... oh no wait. Dont have to, damn singleplayer games"

I'm not saying this is a bad game, graphics are insane and the world is epic. But it still misses something, and that is other players. Only games that I had fun with as single player that I can remember are FF7 and Zelda games :P But I dont know, maybe I can add this game to the list too.

While Oblivion may be good (still in the process of getting it myself), as far as an MMORPG goes, it's neither Online nor Multiplayer, so it don't belong here.

ok one if it was a mmo which it is not it, it would be cool.

and why compare it to wow or any mmo? its not like wow from what i understand.

when it becomes a mmo then compare cause there are thing you can do in a stand alone console you cant do in a mmo thats a fact.::::20::::::28::

Coulden't really become a MMO, you would have all the shops empty with everyone going on and stealing things they shoulden't image

It is not a MMO so it cannot be on top of a MMO list.

However, I do agree that Oblivion owns any multiplayers game that can't handle solo properly like WoW.

I am currently overplaying Civ4 (download a few players scenarios so far hehe) and waiting for Heroes of Might and Magic V, as well as waiting over Auto-Assault and I7.  I may be more of a grouper than a soloer, but if a MMO can't handle solo properly, how do they expect me to trust them about grouping?  image

And...BIOWARE is in the MMO arena now!  RaR!  We are going to see the fable lands of untold happiness!  As long as they remains true to the basics they show us in the past, they are going to roxor the MMO market by offering nice solo and grouping!  RaR!  All praise to the Kings!  image

If Bioware fails, this might be the end of the MMO genre as far as I am concerned.  But Bioware are Gods, they can't fail!  They are going to roxor!  image  Solo like never before in a MMO, group like never before!  I can see it.  I can feel it!

If a MMO can't stand the comparaison to a solo game, it is indeed lacking quite a lot...and most MMOs can't stand the comparaison and survive long past the shiny first MMO experience.

In real life, if you had the ability to come back to life for dying and not go to jail for committing crimes, do you think society would be as it is today?

That's the reason why you can't take a single player game and make it multiplayer, and why MMORPGs cannot have the freedom that a single player game can.

When I read this, I was expecting some truely antagonizing and sarcastic reasons like:

    1) it's 100% instanced

    2) it's totally carebear

etc. , etc. , ad nauseum....

I was pleasantly surprised that it was just a fanboi expressing his love of the game. For me anyway, Oblivion is a hard game to not love. Yeah, the OP knew it wasn't MMO and all of us here know it's not MMO. So what? It's a gosh darned good game!

However, those of you that flamed for it not being MMO are missing an important point. Oblivion is much better than any MMO on the market. Of course, Neverwinter Nights was also better than any MMO ever made but that should really make you wonder why.

I don't have to wonder why. I know why. MMORPGs lack the depth of open ended RPGs like Oblivion. I've talked before about how even NetHack and Zangband have more depth in their gameplay than most MMOs and they've been out for over a decade.

MMMORPGs are inferior to single player RPGs because their gameplay has all the depth of piss on a flat rock. That's why I've gone back to MUDs until they can make a sufficiently deep MMORPG. I'll probably play through Morrowind again while I gather the money for an XBox 360 and Oblivion. No way my computer is gonna be able to run the PC version.

Jesus Christ, it's the haiku guy again.

Anyway, while the OP was a little off-based by saying to put Oblivion on this website, I think he meant it tongue-in-cheek... but the fact remains, I actually do feel more immersed into a virtual world in Oblivion rather than almost any other MMO I've ever played... which is tough, considering that's the MMO selling point--a virtual world.

It's easier to feel immersed in a game where other players aren't ruining it for you.

Oblivion is good yes, but there's still a lot they didn't do right. The loading screens, the way your weapons and armor breaks every five seconds, the lockpicking system, the stun system, and a few other things. Unfortuntely when you're playing such an awesome game the problems that would seem insignificat in any other game just seem so much more annoying.

  • anarchyartanarchyart Member Posts: 5,378

I love the lockpicking system! Seriously, it's genius! I have picked a Very hard lock ( 5 tumblers! ) it was insane but I only broke like 4 picks doing it. Also, I load very fast, it makes Battlefield 2 look like a sega cd game by comparison. Yes the stun is annoying but very fitting IMO. Buy repair hammers if your armor breaks, they fix it!

There's only one problem in Oblivion as I see it: they don't have a national 2 or 3 month holiday when it was released so we can play it in peace!

    Thank you. lol

Oblivion is amazing. The lock picking system is amazing. The loading screen only last for a split second.

Hell, WoW tried to step into the single player world a bit and failed.

Why can't we say that Oblivion stepped into the multiplayer world a bit, and succeeded?

    Back on topic

    10. Because Everyone stays in character and never breaks

    11. I never get smacked by a bunch of n00bles, they finally get smacked by me!

    12. There is NO grind!

    13. It's not a Carebear land. I CAN steal from other, I can kill others.

    14. Items don't all look the same, when you get a sword/mace that has special attributes, you see the attributes.

    15. you can actually kill GUARDS!

Oblivion is aimed at one player. you can't have that experience for thousands of people at the same time.

    case closed.

oblivion defiantely does have a multiplayer feel to it. i usually hate offline RPG's, but i'm so addicted to oblivion its unreal.

a friend of mine actually said to me "i think they should make oblivion online", but tbh i think it' ruin the game. the whole feel of the game is very realistic and would just be ruined by hundreds of other people running around doing the same stuff. your character somehow feels important yet insignificant at the same time in the beginning, you don't feel asthough he's anything special and are soon proven he's not when you get your ass wooped by a child with a big axe.

i think i'd have to say oblivion is the best offlien game i've ever played. Fallout is the only other offline RPG i've had this much fun with, but oblivion takes the biscuit with its gorgeous graphics and immensely cool combat system.

Carebear?!?!?! YOU CAN KILL ANYONE ANYWHERE! They have perma death and full looting! You can steal anything from anyone anywhere!
  • ladyattisladyattis Member Posts: 1,273

    16. Because most MMOs can't keep continuity as the Elder Scrolls developers have in their series from the first installment to Oblivion.

    17. Because it's good to be the hero or villian!

    18. Because most MMOs couldn't implement half of Oblivion's features without gimping or nerfing it later for carebears!

    19. Because there's no magical respawn, besides restarting from your last game save, after you die!

Actually, if you had been paying attention, while you were reading my post, you would have seen that I expected a troll to list complaints LIKE those. You can level just about any critisizism at any game if you want to. Or you could just call any game crap if you're less creative. In fact, you can literally argue that cows are purple and fly!

<sigh> However, if you want to see how a troll would answer your statement...... here goes.

Yes you can kill anyone anywhere, the game makes sure of that by scaling every damn mob in the game to within your level range. You're never faced with a situation that you CAN'T WIN. Carebear.

There can be no permadeath in a game that you can save anytime and anywhere. The only way that you can have permadeath in a game is if it only saves when you quit and erases the save game when you die. In short, you have infinite continues so you can do everything over until you beat it. Yes, you can play the game permadeath, but that's only IF YOU CHOOSE TO. Carebear.

You can steal anything from anywhere making it easier to get gold and uber equipment so that you can pwn every pre-defanged and declawed mob in the game. Carebear.

Had this been an actual troll post, I would have wrapped it up with some l337 speak and few choice immature statements about your sexuality and or your mother's virtue. It isn't so there's no need to get bent.
