It's not always a cash grab that unlocks new inventory slots.
I seem to remember some slot in Everquest that only appeared after the Kunark (or Vellious) expansion, that pretty much is a standard inventory slot these days. I think it was an extra bag slots - from 6 to 8, then from 8 to 10. (My memory is very fuzzy when these happened, though. Someone help me here, please.) It wasn't there before an expansion.
There were other slots enabled by expansions. Power Sources. Charms. Mounts. The last I remember as Legacy of Ykesha. I actually bought one of those awful frog-things.
