Seemingly, a similar good 3d was deviated to the definition of rpg vs other genres...so I define from the beginning what I'd like to play in multiplayer, better if mmog but also host/guest +/- local mp can be fine.
-action oriented... but no esports. also adventure/player driven story is ok
-multiplayer pve coop...I don t like pvp, but a "natural" open world fight can be ok..no esports or leaderboards or competition
-no emphasis on level, grind, skills or any kind of numerical/tiered growth.
-easy drop in drop out system, that doesn't penalize new players.
-open world, huge levels, not instances/ raids
...if anyone shares similar tastes and doesn't find a suitable game, you're welcome.

ok if it doesnt resemble a rpg for someone...call it simply "action, mp, sandbox player driven openworld game" or any other name

It's a very strange game, but it may fit what you are looking for.

well..uhm. I hate hc chars or full-loot, but could deal with it, or a gold penalty.
a exploration coop survival with persistent world and story/lore/events. (a bit rpg-ish, basically a rpg..without stats/exp/level...no grammar nazis or trolls plz)
Every gaming session is an adventure. I recommend the Tanoa map. Most people play on the weekend though it seems.
Don't let the bugs bite you.
The gameplay:
• join server
• chose either blufor faction, opfor faction, or independent faction
• click spawn and group up (group menu) with other people you want to play with
• find equipment & weapons inside vehicle spawning inside towns (where you spawn)
• find food and water and maybe some money, inside town areas
• go out to the dynamic spawning missions on map (with ai soldiers), to find loot/ground vehicle/helicopter, and fight other player groups
• fight other players, everywhere on the map
• spend money buying more equipment at some of the gunstores located around the map
• You can't be too careful when playing Wasteland!
• buy night vision goggles for night time play, or if lucky find them as spawned item inside vehicles
• never look ai soldiers in the eye (basically aimbots)
• take care so that Arma 3 bugs and shitty features, doesn't kill you (e.g running in front of a weapons crate rolling down a hillside, or running/swimming into a boat that is slightly moving)
• Includes base building, with 100 hour persistence.
• Only base building have 100 hour persistence. Server restart after 12 hours or so.
Playing alone is totally ok, but require more caution, to not get shot by player groups roaming the huge map.
Random video about Wasteland showing gameplay:
Note: Other "Wasteland" servers are usually boring to play with, because they are filled with too much stuff. On Sa-Matra Wasteland servers, you have to work to get to find good stuff, making the gameplay a lot more rewarding. No idea what type of Wasteland server they play on in the linked video above here.
Note2: Ah, I see now that the video above show some non-Sa-Matra Wasteland server gameplay, becuase that server has OP stuff in it, like tanks with thermal optic equipment.
It's designed to be played coop and while there is gear progression it isn't so vertical that you _have_ to have better rarity items. Play through all maps on easy and normal and ignore the grindmill- close to what you are asking for.
RPG progression has become part of almost every genre now and you are going to have a hard time finding a game without and shred of progression.
But the mighty search quest goes on.
except for moba's, I'm really having a bad time
other ideas?
any other?
what about survivals? or any coop? maybe killing floor?
