What's the deal with Destiny?

d_20d_20 Member RarePosts: 1,878
Been playing on my new PS4. They have a free trial in the lead up to the new xpac release. It was pretty fun, but I've hit the cap at level 7 for the trial.

I noticed some level 40 players running around in the same quest area as me. Do they re-use the same areas over and over? Is it like Skyforge where you keep leveling and going back to the Cosmodrome? That get's boring for me after a while. But I don't know enough about the game since I only made it to level 7.

Can you play solo in the higher level quests or is there a lot of pressure to group for advancement?

I'm just looking for a casual-friendly console mmo experience. The shooter is fun. I like the graphics and the everything runs really well. Anyone else playing this?

No. Still waiting for a PC version. I don't want to play with sub-par ps4 graphics.

For me, the game's lacking communication and party systems mar the entire experience. If you want to raid you need parties. However, the game gives you no in-game means of finding players. Having to turn to bungee's forums and add total randoms to your friends list just isn't an adequate way to design grouping in an MMO. Also, the Strike bosses are all effectively the same thing. They all turn the game into gears of war by forcing you to take cover with spammable one-shots. They all summon adds to force you out of cover. They all instantly kill someone who attempts to use their melee power. They are all bullet sponges. There is next to no mechanical variety.

I have this game but don't play it much. I would like an answer to this as well.

I've only been playing for about a month, but I have been enjoying it a good bit. To answer some questions:

    1. The reason level 40s are in the same area, is you do go back to zones for quests but they are in a different part of the map. Also, they could be gathering different materials etc.

    2. As far as grouping content, I hit the cap and didn't group often at all. I did all of the storyline content with no problems. The game does a good job of matchmaking for Strikes which are 3 man "dungeons", so there isn't really a need to LFG on websites etc. HOWEVER, there is a few things that you can't use the matchmaking for. The few raids in the game don't have it, there's also a hardcore PVP mode that you can't do it in, also Nightfalls don't have them so you'll need to get a group manually together for that.

Considering Destiny 2 is going to be announced next year I'm betting you won't see a Destiny 1 on PC.

They are replaying content (be it missions or strikes) as that's the only way (next to raids and pvp) to gain gear at max lvls. SO yes you will be seeing a lot of the same areas/missions over and over.

Can you play solo in the higher level quests or is there a lot of pressure to group for advancement?
You can easily solo about 90% of the normal missions/quests even some strikes can be done solo, but any end game content for gear has to be done in groups. Nearly all content has matchmaking so finding people isn't much of an issue, though communication is a must at higher difficulties.

I'm just looking for a casual-friendly console mmo experience.
I'd say the general gameplay is casual friendly, though don't expect to do much endgame unless you have a solid group to play with and A LOT of money to waste on 'expensions', also you'll have no chance in pvp unless you grind strikes/raids on a near daily basis.

Either way if you're looking for a MMO grab a half decent PC, ALL MMO(ish) games on consoles are broken gameplay wise and require quite the investment of money and

The graphics are fine on PS4, in my opinion. I mean, most of us on this website play MMOs, which don't necessarily have great graphics most of the time.

I wouldn't listen to this guy he has no idea what he is talking about and you can buy destiny with every expansion. Destiny: The Collection is $60 USD and has every expansion.

That is no consolation to those who actually bought the game and its expansions as they came out, nor does it provide access to future expansions. When you couple the fact that Destiny has been releasing expansions more rapidly than other MMOs with the PSN/XBOX fees,  Destiny gets to be a very expensive game to play and to stay current in.

If you want to do raids just google Fireteam finder and you will have a better chance of finding players on which ever console you play on.

Raids/strikes require you to have a certain light level but this is easily obtained.

PvP in the Iron Banner can but done without having the best equipment it's just harder.

90% of the game was soloable until The Taken King expansion.

With the problems at Sony at the moment, i wouldn't hold your breath on that one. A lot can happen between now and then, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was either delayed, or released to more or a different platform.

Thanks for the comments. It's an interesting discussion with the different points of view.

The Collection isn't very expensive. I was just looking for something like an MMO-light in a shooter version. I have my PC games for when I want to focus and communicate, etc. The console games are for when I want to sit in my recliner and play.

Any other MMO shooters on PS4 anyone can recommend?

    Pathetic response.

Sub par graphics for a game that was made for consoles, the graphics are fine.

    Enjoy your PC port lol.

well i am assuming you where on earth only? if so then those 40s where most likely farming the mobs there or events. there is also Venus/mars/moon as well as some more isolated areas like the dreadnought.

What's the deal with Destiny? Well, it is still not an MMO. So it's kind of an odd place to talk about it.

I would suggest this was purposeful but backfired. Companies want you on their forums, their site, they want a piece of you. Steam is the master of that and gaming companies hate it. Of course if you are an independent Steam is superb.

Destiny was supposed to be the next great thing, we were all supposed to be playing it, all supposed to be joining the Bungee club. It was not that good, it did not happen.

I noticed that this is how the boss fights went during the end of the story quests I did on the way to level 7. I had to defend my ghost against waves of attackers while it did something in the Cosmodrome.

Yes, I was just going back and forth between earth and the tower.

It was pretty fun to just jump on and shoot some stuff. It would be cool if it was like an online Halo.

-The high lvl players running around on Cosmodrome are ppl either doing patrols(farming for faction rep and/or materials), lvl 40 quests or strikes(the entrances to those are still on the same places you visited before).
-The game can be soloed like 95%. There's also some high end content which gives top lvl gear that has an ingame group finder(Iron Banner, Prison of Elders etc.) The few things that you need to manually find a group in order to complete them are the most 'hardcore', like raids, the weekly nightfall strike and Trials of Osiris(an elimination type pvp event that runs every weekend).
-If you're looking for a 'casual shooter mmo' i think you found the right place. The game is extremely fun and arguably the only and by default best game of it's kind. The only other game that comes close is The Division but i can't comment on that since i haven't played it.
-So I suggest you give it a try. Be warned tho that the game's loot/reward system is almost entirely based on rng so be prepared for a lot of frustrations.
    I hope i helped a bit. Cheers!

The game has high level areas placed within (or nearby) low level zones. This is especially true for Earth.

You will find yourself returning to known zones as you play along. At the same time, it's not a game where you repeat the same mission 20 times. It is more that instead of spending 20 hours on Earth, you spend 5, then 5 somewhere else, then 5 back on Earth.

You also don't return to all the areas. Some places are a one time visit. It's the Hub places you spawn into that you will see a couple of times.

Doubtful that problems at Sony would hold anything up; their only input with respect to Destiny is to QA stuff for the PS4.

As others have said. Not all on earth. Yes it can be called mmo-lite - and has been called more of an mmo than sitting in a garrison using LFG ...

    60fps graphics.

Hype alone doesn't sell 30m in its first year. Only 8M or so its its first 3 months as well so it wasn't day 1 hype that sold the game.

No LFG tool for some stuff. And Bungee have said they are not adding one. Some people don't like this. Others regard LFG tools as a thing of evil of course.

Communication. The standard console communication has always been there. Stuff was added / tweaked based on feedback post launch - nearly two years ago now. (The big issue was the use of a megaserver.) Not an issue these days - check out Bungee's site.

If you haven't already check out some vids and so on to make sure you like the style etc. In summary though great game that will give many hours of fun. You will get bored at some point as in all games but there is a lot there for the combo pack price.

In response to the OP's question, you get daily bounties which give you XP and reputation which can be on certain planets or a certain planet like Earth's Cosmodrome maybe the best way to complete one or two bounties due to the type of enemies there and the ease or which to complete them.
This is why you will always see a variety of different level players in various zones which are normally used for lower level players leveling up via their story arc.
