well, if you're looking for a wolrd to immerse yourself into, stay away from Guild Wars.

The game is really basic, and it's more of a multiplayer than an MMO. Sure there are persistant cities, but that's it. PlayNC (the devs of GW) don't even call it a MMORPG, they call it a CORPG. Competative Online Role Playing Game, since it's lacking many things that make MMOs great.

GW is a great game to pick up and play every once and awhile (for me at least) because it's free and really fun to play. But, to me it offers nothing that a real MMO does. It's hard to explain what GW is w/o playing it.

You kinda just log on. PVP in FPS style matches. Sometiems those matches last hours and hours. But, there really isn't much else to the game. PVE is all instanced and is mainly used to be a more powerful PVPer. You can even create a lvl 20 PVP Char and jump straight into PVP.

I hear that Ryzom is going to shut down. But I am not 100% on that.

guild wars is a beautiful game and the no monthly fees is awesome. if you play it straight thru it has a good story, very nice graphics, nice weapons, and very nice controls. if you are looking for a game with no ksing, and all that other bad stuff, and want to play a game where skill rules over higher lvl and better equipment, then go with guild wars. also with the release of factions in less then a month, it has alot of potential to keep going and expanding even more.

Saga of Ryzom has a free trial, if I were you, I would try it out first. I personally didn't really like the game tough it definitly has its good things. The community is by far one of the best around, imo, even EVE's community can't touch Ryzom's,where Guild Wars has the worst community. even WoW's isn't as bad as GW's.

Guild Wars is more like..an adventure. you follow a story line trough instances (the instanced missions are done very well) and your character and his/her party gets to play the hero. its a pretty unique experience. but if you expect an mmorpg out of guild wars then your in for a cold shower. its just a very well done online game, that has a lot of aspects from MMO's.

I didn't try Ryzom for VERY long..I found the combat too boring (which is the most important factor for me). The world is very beautifull and its pretty big and everything feels big.

my advice: try them both, and if possible, get both as GW doesn't require a monthly fee and I thnk SoR only requires a monthly fee, no client costs.

Totally wrong. :) In fact, they're launching an expansion soon, Ryzom Ring, which will allow players to create and play their own "scenarios" - which can be quest/dungeon-like, RP events, simple locations to explore - whatever you can imagine.

I recommend Ryzom. Especially if you like roleplaying; it won the Best Story award on MMORPG.com for a reason. :::^D::

If you're going to flame a game, then at least get who makes it right.

If you're going to accuse me of flaming something (when I didn't) then make sure you are correct when you are "correcting" me.

NCSoft is just the publisher, they didn't make the game at all.  Guild Wars is ArenaNet's first game.  Back to the topic...

I found Ryzom very boring, but I played the beta a year ago so I have no idea what has changed.  Guild Wars isn't your typical MMO and probably isn't what you want.  Flip a coin?

Ok I know I am bias on this subject as I have played Ryzom for two years and love it, and have not played Guild Wars.

Currently Ryzom is going strong, more new players are joining every day, and I am seeing more people online in the past 3 months than in any time before that, from my experiences. As a result I would say its not going to die any time soon, and with the new, exciting expansion pack I would say its going from strength to strength.

All be it, that it has always been comparitivly lesspopulated than the big boys, but its also had less funds for advertisements etc.

What I suggest is you give the 7 day free trial of Ryzom a try. Goto the mainland, do not judge the game on the refugee island, its a poor representation of the game to be honest, and its quiet as people often goto the mainland fairly quickly (also 4 refugee islands doesnt help). Once on the mainland, decide on the game from there. If you don't think Ryzom is for you, then try Guild Wars, but I do recommend trying the free trial

NCSoft owns AN, PlayNC is NCs online retail arm, and NC has NOTHING to do with GWs development.

    Guild Wars

eh i dunno... i poked my head in on Saga of Ryzom and didn't like it. no real reason to it. it just didn't feel "right" for me. this was w/ the trial itself.

Guild Wars felt right. but it's not an MMO.

i'm too tired to give a decent response.

so i'll just bash my knuckles on the keyboard and make cave(wo)man noises instead.

The Guild Wars community has it's bad sides(runners),but every online game has a bit of bad people in the community. Anyway,Guild Wars looks to me like it's going to go well because of the way the civil war between the Kurzick and Luxons in Factions was setup to allow players to join in on it.

I can't say anything about the Saga of Ryzom though...

Just to note, AN likes runners, just some in the community dont. Tho in the new GW thats not as much of an issues as you cant be run through PvP :)

Someone who takes people to new destinations or through missions quickly for money.  AN likes them as its something added to the economy but some others dont like it as instead of working for their position, they pay people for it.  its not such a big deal anymore tho for most.

I liked Ryzom from the little bit I played.  I tried out the 7 day trial and it was alright, and I heard that it only gets better on the mainland.  I might give it another try soon.

I liked Guild Wars, but it is not a mmorpg, and is not nearly as immersive and doesnt have the scope that Ryzom has.  Still, it is fun for quick PvP, and it has some good quests and nice graphics and music

You have to try it again if you didn't even reach the mainland..
