Question about games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale

MightyUncleanMightyUnclean Member EpicPosts: 3,531
I have a question about classics like Baldur's Gate.  I haven't played most of the old ones like that since release, so I forget how they played.  Are the UIs terribly clunky and out-of-date by modern standards?

Nahh , those UI hold up pretty well imo , particularly with the pauseable combat ...

OK, thanks.  If I remember correctly, you could assign different AI roles to your party members, right?  Like tell a healer to stay in the back and heal?

So it basically plays as turn-based, constant pausing and issuing commands?  Man, why can't I remember this?  I guess it has been 20 years...

It's not really turn based. You can pause and give your party members commands but it's not like one side takes its moves/actions then the other, etc.

I bought IWD and it's expansion back in the day and didn't really like it because I was terrible at those party style/ strategy RPG games and was more into Diablo style games. These days the slow tactical RPGs are more my pace. I was reading reviews on Divinity: Original Sin  and a few of the negatives were "slow pace at the start and too much dialog and story and not enough combat in the first town"  "too many tool tips" lol, seems like a positive to me. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Yeah, the older I get, the more I miss the slow-paced, thinking-oriented games of my youth.

Highly recommended dos one of the best turn based rpgs in many years.

Also consider that older popular games may well have received many community mods and fixes.  I am presently playing arcanum with around half a dozen community mods that add wide screen, high resolution support, ui fixes, more detailed towns, higher quality music and a community patch.

Most games of this genre allow you to play in real time or turn based, it's up to you.  For a difficult fight you might prefer to pause as you issue instructions to your team but you don't necessarily need to play that way all the time.

I just recently beat BG1 again and it was as awesome as I remember it. I'm working on BG2 now.

I would suggest Shadowrun returns. It is a new game with an old feeling and great storyline.
I did play Balrum, Lords of Xulima but the story was weak and very grindy...

Balrum is another game similar I suggest.

    Another is Ember

I've been keeping my eye on Balrum.  Do be successful in that game, do you have to craft or build much?  Or is that optional?

Thanks for the Ember suggestion Turtle. That one looks pretty fun. I'll have to buy that one.

I'm not sure what difficulty I used to play Baldur's Gate or even if it had a difficulty setting but without pausing and planning and sometimes loading back for 37 times I couldn't win most of the fights.

Second that on Ember. Great little game and very cheap. And for those wondering about crafting, it does have a nice crafting system but it's purely optional - you can play and never craft if you want.

Dragon's Age has that pause combat to direct your team like Baldur's Gate.  And if you've never played the first Dragon's Age, play it it's one one of the best RPG's made.

Optional ... But it is well done and fun .. You can make enough money selling stuff to npcs to support yourself ...

Also sounds to me like you should try out Darkest Dungeon ... amazing TBSRPG , incredible depth, immersion and replay value ...http://store.steampowered.com/app/262060/

Something like that, but they didn't work very well.  You're better off turning off the AI and managing your party members yourself.
I agree with @SedrynTyros here, but I'll add that the interface for loading a party of your own characters was abysmal.  It was functional, but entirely not elegant or intuitive.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

If you like Baldur's Gate, I would highly recommend Planescape Torment.  Better story, setting, characters and game experience compared to BG (IMHO) :)

The only issue I had with Baldur's Gate was that the characters were very small and hard to see. Brilliant game and really hard some parts of it I think I kept dying to parts of it. Still have not finished it yet I did play it ages ago but this is my second run of it and I am ashamed to say I occasionally considered story mode to get past a particularly hard bit.

Must check Ember out and yes Divinity Original Sin 2 is on my wish list .

Some great suggestions here already. I'd just add that Baldur's Gate 2 is widely considered to be even better than the original, and that it is available Digital Rights Management free and cheap from gog.com

That's a real old school experience. Actually being able to make your own hard copy, and not having to play with a wire stuck up your rear end!
