Paladins: Champions of the Realm News - Hi-Rez Studios' Todd Harris has taken to the Paladins Reddit channel to present a brief history of the game from concept through its current open beta phase. The post compares Paladins and Overwatch throughout their respective development cycles and is in response to some community members asserting that it is an "Overwatch clone".

I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high
And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
No idea what you're talking about, mostly cause you just played the alpha (like i did too). Right now is a really polished game, they're going back and forth with changes since first OB. I know cause i've been there since day 1. Game right now looks very promising, with steam launch it's got a nice playerbase too, so we'll see... I played TF2, play Overwatch, play Battleborn (which is nothing to compare for me, for me it's awesome) and obviously Paladins. Can say if this is better or that one... Every TF2 clone has his own identity and if we just keep making comparisons of every clone, we won't help to grow their communities and attract more players to them. Seems like these days is all hate against games we don't like or we don't want to succeed as "our precious niche game".
Peace.
As ANYONE who played the Beta of Paladins will attest to this game WAS NOT the way it is now, they kept adding in more and more overwatch elements. It now IS a clone.

It's absolutely, 100% clear to me that one is a copy of the other. I mean come on, when I saw Fernando a couple of days ago, I actually laughed out loud in half shock.
Now and then there comes out a game that isn't a copy of anything older, like Minecraft but those games are few. If you think something is a too blatant copy then don't play it.
You can make an elven ranger that basically looks and work the same in a hundred MMOs but people don't complain about that for some reason.
Personally do I think it sucks that devs and publishers are so lazy and unimaginative that they constantly copying eachother but we will have to live with that, what we can is to award unique games by buying them and recommending them to our friends, so the game devs actually see that creativity earns money.
Blizzard could sue them but that might be opening up a pandoras box, Activision do after all have plenty of games that are very similar to others after all.

I don't know where this rumor started that Paladins came first, but it didn't. Paladins was in alpha when Overwatch was in closed alpha. Also back then, Paladins was a different game, card heavy, not push-the-objective heavy.
The only thing that really matters, is the game fun to play.
I really get tired of people misusing the word "hate". Just because someone criticizes a game does not mean they hate it. Hate is a much stronger word than just being critical of something. I rarely ever see any hate in these forums, just people expressing their opinions whether they like it or not.
That's all you need to know about what public perception will be.

"Overwatch was announced. We were shocked and not sure what direction to take. We were already so far along with Paladins, but we didn't want to compete directly against Blizzard.
We initially tried to find different ways to differentiate on game-play (different TTK, different style maps and game modes, different theme, etc), but the feedback from our tests, stats, and surveys showed that only a small part of our population was enjoying that style of game. In the end we said screw it and just made what we thought best, and closest to our original vision, even if people would think it's too close to Overwatch."
As far as copying goes, it seems both games copied from eachother as far as I can tell, and they both copied from TF2 and Global Agenda. There is also original stuff in both.
As far as the specific Rukus/DVa comparisons, they do look very similar in the 1st person view. But the concept of a goblin driving a big mech is kind of a WoW shredder rip-off, isn't it? Also DVa's mechanics are different, most notably where if you kill the mech, she pops out and you have to kill DVa herself to actually finish the kill. Rukus never leaves his mech.
Plus DVa has cool lore- she's a 19 year old video game star, who's so good at video games that she's recruited to pilot a powerful mech for Overwatch. She has all kinds of internet-speak references as a classic "gamer girl". Rukus is a typical "New Jersey"-type goblin found in countless video games.
I found this kind of coolness and completeness throughout Overwatch, and the same type of generic blandness throughout Paladins.
I hope the game will do at least OK because I love HiRez, and certainly wouldn't want them to suffer losses from what seems like an unfortunate coincidence of making a game similar to a Blizzard game at the same time Blizzard is doing it.
Judging from responses I've seen, there does seem to be plenty of people willing to play it because it will be f2p and they are unwilling to pay for Overwatch, so they should do ok.
Personally I won't be playing it because Overwatch is just plain amazing, and I didn't find Paladins to be anything special when I played it in closed beta. But if I refused to pay $40 for an amazing game, then yeah, maybe I would.
I think you can put Paladins in this niche. All these games copy one another in some respect, it all comes down to what do you enjoy. Personally I tend to shy away from games listed as f2p as they end up milking you for far more money than you would spend on a b2p. Being oblivious to the actual cost of a game is inexcusable.

I have never waited in queue for over 1 minute in Paladins either.
One of these things is not like the others...
