Honest, Unbiased Review of FoM

RimokuRimoku Member UncommonPosts: 90

Just before anyone asks:
No, I didn't play this game for just 10 minutes then leave.
No, I'm not a hardcore, "patriotic" fan of this game.

Face of Mankind, What exactly is it?

It is a Sci-Fi, skill based first person shooter with no "leveling". Instead, you do mission to get "experience" which in turn can get you higher ranks. With higher ranks, new things become possible ((eg. Creating missions))

Sounds like a great game!

Yes, it certainly does sound appealing. After spending only about 45 minutes downloading the client, I was pretty impressed. Usually one thing that agitates me is downloading a game at 78/kbs because it almost always show the game will contain lag (keyword: Almost)

So how was your first time in it?

After I finished the download, I had to sit passed a lengthy patch download. When that finally concluded, I entered the game. Upon the sign in screen, the game froze. There was nothing I could do so I hit the reset button on my computer. On my second attempt, I ran the game in "windowed mode". It had appeared my anti-spyware / anti-virus program had asked me if I wanted to allow the connection. I realized thats why the game froze (But usually it would alt+tab no?). Whatever the case I punched in my account information and joined in.

Nice, So how was the start?

As a new player, they had a pretty decent character creation system, but nothing to extravaganza. The tutorial on the other hand was superior to other MMOrpg tutorials. After finishing the newbie-friendly tutorial, It threw me in the "real-game". I started in New York Brooklyn as a LED (Police faction).

Cool a futuristic New York! How was it?

It was ok. I walked into a decent futuristic type of shopping center. Everyone was running around with cool armor and glasses. But then horror struck; as i walked out of the shopping mall. I had walked into a "gankers trap". Needless to say they killed me with ease. I had no clue what i was doing! In this game, if you die, you die permenantly unless you have a clone. Lucky for me I had one.

Phew, Good thing they gave you a clone!

Yes it was. After waiting a long enough time for the damn clone to start up, i imediatly left and returned to brooklyn. This time, staying inside. After a small search for the medical terminal, it took me 1600 UC (universal credits, the "money") to heal. I had only started with 10000 which was unfortunate that I died and had to waste 1600 healing.

Darn, That sucked!

Yes it did, but I didn't mind all that much. I wondered around for a long while and bought myself a decent gun for 7000. WIth the rest of the cash, it went towards ammo. After numerious hours of exploring by myself it was time to hit the hay. The next day, I decided to have a bit of social interaction. I went to my home town brooklyn and talked around with some LED. They told me to get a mission. Although i checked for a mission, there was none there. The friendly people said that missions are rare to come as they are only player created. "Alright" I thought, might as well wait a while, it shouldnt be long.

Oh thats good, so did you get a mission?

Yes, Yes i did, 2 hours and 45 minutes later. The mission was to patrol brooklyn, watch out for any danger. Pretty cool i thought, so I gave it a go. The mission went well for a while, but suddenly we were attacked in the subway. MY GOD IS THE COMBAT HORRIBLE, OMFG. Yet again, I took another friendly trip to the cloning facility. After returning, I saw my comrads managed to kill them. After the mission was over, I received 6k roughly.

Woa 6k? nice! What did you do then?

Just like a gold digging wife, I went to the market and bought myself some armor (Notice no plural on armor, as armor cost almost as much as a gun). I looked for another mission and found one 1 hour and 23 minutes later. When I joined it, these people yelled "SCOTTISH PEOPLE ONLY" and they killed me, not even giving me a chance to do anything. So again, i visited my favourite place, the cloning facility. But this time, i was aggrivated...

Aggrivated, but why?

Well, when i returned to brooklyn, I had lost my new armor. Yes thats right, you drop EVERYTHING, even EQUIPED items (except your gun). I went to the medical center and used the last of my precious money to heal. That was it for today.

Cool, what happened the next day?

Well, I got online, lucky for me there was a mission. I joined it quickly and made sure it wasnt a "SCO campaign" (scottish campaign). I met with some cool people and we patrolled. We finished up the mission and i recieved about 6k again. I bought armor again and some ammo (As i said, you drop EVERYTHING). There was no mission again for another 1 hourish. Finally, a mission appeared! I quickly teleported there and joined.

Good job!

No not good job. My "Comrads" said "NO R1" and they decided to kill me as well. But this time, i didnt make a trip to the cloning facility, no sir no, i made a nice trip to the graveyard. It appears that all my clones had run out.

Omfg... sux0r!

Yes it does suck, and I cant create a new character for 24 hours and thats why im here righting this review.

Graphics: 8.2/10
Actually, ever since they put the new engine in, the game doesnt have that bad graphics.

Sound: 7.5/10
Great sound. So why only a 7.5? No reload sound and surround sound sucks.

Roleplay 9.2/10
Amazingly, must people to actually Roleplay!

Value NA / 10
N/A

Fun 6.7/10
I don't know. It was fun at points, but overall, its pretty boring waiting for missions.

Community 7/10
I'd have given this a 9/10 if it wasnt for the scottish / R1 NOOB killers.

Performance 4.8/10
Omfg, you get like HIGH framerate with full detail when no ones around, but FPS goes to like 7 when theres only like 3 people shooting.

Lag 10/10
No lag at all, amazing work duplex!

Customer Service 9.3/10
They actually listen to you! Still some hacking issues though.

CONCLUSION
All in all, it is a ok game. Since it is free at the moment, I would say go ahead and give it a try. But if your looking for action, DON'T look at this game. Unfortunetly, when this game goes P2P, I don't think it will have a very large community. So anyways, thats just my 2 cents.

Well you really have choosen the wrong faction in the game. The LED are an buch of idiots...well most of them, and this review only shows why. I would recomand joining the CMG or the FDC. That are two faction who I know are pretty good. Offcourse for the renages under us the MotB and the BoS are good choices.

Also if you like to save the pupies of the dominion join the GoM (No not kidding these guys are nuts....). The combat is pretty good, espacialy if you get trained in it.

Yes it drops everything that is so much treu and you you buy new stuff. That is very importnent infact, becouse if you did not so then the economic would go down a lot. You must also take into consideration this game is comunity based. So if you want to try again go to the FDC (military) or CMG (trading company, with an large and well trained personal army), or LED, but make sure you meet up with he right poeple in there.

Gankers, yes they are part of the everyday lifes with the the dominion (the goverment) they are annoying, they are to be killed. LED doing there best (well not really, just saying that so poeple dont flame me :P). Also if you join an faction join there ventrillo channel (I assume every faction has them, I know LED and FDC does). This way you can ask backup fast incase you need it.

If it really needed (When i'm or someone else is in dangour) I'm sure I can get an army of 10+ one an place within a couple of minutes using ventrillo.

This is a nice game and it will most lickely not get an large base of die hard fans, it an differand kind of game, with sometime can be even boring (However as it is an comunity bases game this can be solved by chatting) like when on gaurd duties, YES gaurd duties. 1 hour looking an an node in with almost no-one get trough, but one the action really start. It gets fun

Example, An general of the FDC was captured by BoS member (Roleplaying wise) after the HC (High command) gave the order to assamble all man it took about 15 minutes and there where 50 man standing there, an other 15 minutes we where all running in paris storming the eifel tower

once again...gankers made another noob leave the game

  • RimokuRimoku Member UncommonPosts: 90

Im not sure if my scottish teammates and higher rank members count as gankers. And no I didnt leave the game because of gankers, please thoroughly read it once more. However, thank you for your insightful opinion.

Thank you for your input! Yes I did re-create as a FDC due to your advice. I went and did these cool player made and done classes called "101" and "102" which teach you there codes / aspects of the game. But yet again, I am struck with the same problem, and if not, worse. I find myself just running around randomly then actually doing anything. Why? FDC have a mission for new players like every 3 hours or so (NOT exagerated).

This honestly is a good game, good concept, and a well execution of it. But its downfall? Player runned everything. If humans were actually all like you and I, then this game would actually work (And pretty darn good i might add). But sadly, there are alot of 12 year old kids who have nothing to do then ruin the experience of others. If perhaps this game ever fixes its damn combat system (geez, Its really shitty, Im sorry but it is!) and makes PROPER people high rank who are actually WILLING to create missions for low level, then it would be something to watch out for. Becuase at the moment, hardly anyone creates missions for low levels, and if they dont get missions, they cant rank up TO create missions either. Its just a downward spiral.

You should know the tutorial teaches you one thing too, its called Clone Insurance.

That will allow you to die unlimited times, ( for just 2k ingame month, it will only run out when u can't pay the insurance after the month time !!! )

Another thing, you have to really watch your cash. In real life you can't just go buy everything either, you get your salary not on a daily basis I assume.

That scottish only thing I don't get, that shouldn't be allowed at all. There is a IAD site, who are sort of Police of Police where you can report crimes from members of the LED faction. They should have been punished then. And the big issue, its how you experience it. You say don't join this game for action, well whenever Im ingame, I have action 24/7. I seek my own action, explore the world to fight. And sadly LED/FDC aren't really newb friendly factions.

Also soon there will be AUTOMATIC missions also for each profession. Meaning you can join a mission at all times.

Remember, its in beta state :p

CMG is the best for nubs I think. However the FDC is newbie friendly, however it has the militairy disaplin with scares of beginners

    Im in the FDC faction.
Were running missions all day long (euro gmt+1) with the prime time beginning at about 2-3pm.

It may be a bit boring now in the beginning as everyone is practically gathering materials to produce ammo and such. But I believe it will loosen up a bit next week :)
