Amazon Game Studios have finally revealed their hand and the trio of games they revealed last week didn’t go unnoticed. While I think it’s fair to say the fanfare surrounding the reveal wasn’t rapturous (people don’t yet associate Amazon gaming with, well, gaming) there was certainly a smattering of interest surrounding all three titles, if for nothing more than the emphasis on Twitch integration.

INB4 somebody says "Not playing it because of non-consensual PVP" instead of avoiding the thread. XD

"There’s relatively little concrete information in the marketing blurb as to what Twitch integration will really offer, but the prospect of an outside source affecting the game-world, as a puppet master, could certainly be interesting."

If this is the kind of thing that people find interesting in games nowadays, then I guess I've been left behind.

I have absolute zero interest in Twitch, and I certainly wouldn't want it having a driving impact on any games I was playing.

If Amazon tries to shove Twitch down players throats, it will just be a reason for me to pass their games by.

    Well lets see:
The supernatural is real. So that will allow for ghosts, they mentioned nature spirits and, I am sure, Lovecraft inspired demons. As someone in another thread said: Solomon Kane. (Yes I like the film). We could also be talking American Gods (Neil Gaiman) and even the back story to Sleepy Hollow.

Colonial America. In the 17th century. So lots of European powers at play and the varied history they bring to multiplicity of "peoples" who had settled there earlier; each with their cultures, values and mythologies.

An evolving world. Maybe it will expand into the north - The Last of the Mohican's - or down to the south - Treasure Island. Which would enrich things further. And in the far north: ice.

The players are the content - they build villages ... Pretty straightforward but a rarely seen feature.

So the the big question for me: will it be PvP everywhere? I doubt it simply because the concept - as a game - rarely works. Unless they are aiming for something like Darkfall on a grand scale. Its PvP everywhere but if you are deep inside a "country" then you would be expected to be protected by the local guards etc. Nice in theory but.

Pretty sure Twitch won't be shoved down peoples throats though.

I would think a game built around Twitch would have a heavy PvP component.  Are people going to watch others simply questing and crafting?

The setting is definitely very open-ended, particularly with the supernatural aspects of the native cultures.
I guess it will really come down to how big the world is and how well they flesh all of that stuff out, though.

I kind of expect a full-on PvP war out of it.  I mean, they could easily avoid it, but I'm guessing PvP everywhere, with the exception of a couple newbie/tutorial areas/capitols.  I would assume faction capitols would be pretty well protected, if not safe areas.

The whole premise of the era is just built for an all-inclusive world factions war.  Hand the players a new world to colonize/control and let them fight to control its resources.
Generally, when they talk about letting players control their own destinies and such, PvP is pretty open.

    However, from the intro line:
"Band together to reclaim monster-haunted wilds and build thriving civilizations, or strike out on your own, surviving in the face of supernatural terrors and murderous player bandits."

That's pretty ambiguous.  I mean, incredibly ambiguous.  You could take that as meaning there are separate PvE and PvP areas, or simply as them trying to state you are safer in groups.

I'm not sure Amazon thinks I'd like to *watch* games more than play them. The only time I would be interested in Twitch was for a new game reveal or the like. Otherwise, I'm not their demographic.

What is nerdy about knowing details of the history of the world you live on and were born into?

Be nice if people could stop acting like knowledge is lame and to be avoided. World is swirling the bowl like never before in our history, please remember that history and teach it to others.

This game looks meh...I will wait for a friend to start playing it then check it out maybe.

I can understand that.  I know a lot of players who are fearful and can't handle that situation.

There's a repeat theme of "they want me to watch twitch!" in response to this, in more than one place online. I find that... weird? They're games, with twitch integrated into them, so you can a: stream to other viewers or b: be on someone's stream. The idea seems to be catering more towards, in a way, Gladiatorial combat from Roman times. Amazon wants you to play their games for others to watch--you, too, can watch, to learn how others play and better your strat, or be seen by (ideally for Amazon) hundreds of viewers, even catering to the viewers in Breakaway and Crucible--not sure about New World. Amazon wants you to be the entertainers, and the entertainers will bring viewers and possibly also be viewers, and they want that to work in a way that viewers feel they're a part of the game world also.

People need to be playing the game so that other people can watch. Most, if not all, of the popular games that people watch on Twitch are played by far more people than watched.

I'm the same way though, I feel I wouldn't be in that audience either (I rarely watch gaming videos unless it's a review or reveal). But I have a feeling they're going for more than just watchability; rather, those that enjoy watching games will have more tools for interaction and camera mobility, while those in-game will be able to be better streamers due to built-in game mechanics that help them stream — if they so choose to.

I'd wait and see what they come up with over time. Even though I don't care for Twitch whatsoever, I have a feeling they'll have some nice tricks up their sleeves for those that are of the same mindset.

Only New world is actually representing something interesting, the others seem more hype games meant for streamers.

It's no different from any other pronounced mmo.

I still think CU or Pantheon will be the next big MMO.

If their game development is anything similar to the way they handled their reveal stream I don't really have much faith that New World will be very deep and will probably very closely mirror H1Z1.

Also not sure if anyone noticed but in their stream when they first announced New World they didn't actually say MMO they said "Sandbox game".

That is an important distinction, but it could also simply be marketing-speak. Conceivably they could have some sort of hybrid setup with small instance pop caps or co-op, but I would hope that mankind can actually pull off a sandbox MMO.

Because games where people can constantly get ganked have been so universally successful and not niche at all.
  • FlyByKnightFlyByKnight Member EpicPosts: 3,967
Maybe the Twitch integration includes having a "New World" channel on Twitch where people can log-in and view/spectate 24/7.

Let me help you out, given there is insuffient information about the game at the moment but non-consensual Twitch and/or non-consensual PvP=DOA in my book. Not interested in either. TYVM have a nice day.

Defiance placed its emphasis on a gimmick show that had yet to prove itself. It didn't and both the show and the game took a shit. ( I actually liked both, but thats the reality of it ).

In this case, instead of placing your emphasis on making a bad ass game, you instead choose to "innovate" (or shamelessly promote) by placing your emphasis on integration with a platform that might not even exist by the time your MMO is ready to be released.

Sounds like stupid fucking planning to me.
