Software to Help Me Play WOW

JamesCantJamesCant Member UncommonPosts: 6
Hi,

I have a severe repetitive strain injury (work related - not from choking the chicken) that makes playing games like WOW extremely painful. I have searched the internet for some software that could assist me with my rotation but I've not had much luck. Something that would allow me to simply move my Mage around a raid or dungeon while the software performed my rotation. With so many keys needing to be pressed I can't even make it to the first boss sometimes before the pain is unbearable. Just having to move about and target things would help me enormously and allow me to play for longer.

I'm also looking for something that won't get me banned from the game so I guess a bot is out of the question? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

James

    Gaming mouse or gamepad?
Are you onto something or just on something?

Thanks for the speedy response @filmoret! Unfortunately I've tried a gaming mouse - Razer Naga and it hurt like Hell :( Due to my injury, finger and thumb movements for me are painful. I was hoping to minimize the use of my pesky damaged digits with some automation software.

Help us with a better picture.  One hand cannot be used during gameplay?  Or is just a couple fingers?  Can you use a regular mouse or do you need something like an Apple mouse which has no buttons?
Are you onto something or just on something?

All digits on both hands are problematic due to a factory job I had in my teens and throughout my 20s. I can move them but doing things with them for more than 20 minutes causes pain. Even typing this they are beginning to hurt to the point I need to take my pain killers. Its like I'm aged 90 at 30!! Moving a mouse about my desk is fine (as I have a wrist rest) and clicking too. Keyboards are the work of the devil for me tho!

I was hoping for some software that would press my action bar buttons for me while I used my mouse to run around the raid and target stuff. I tried what I think was called a clicker (forget its name) but it was too confusing and I was worried about being banned by Blizzard.

    Thanks for your input @filmoret.

    Just sharing ideas here.

This gives you 6 buttons you can push with your feet.
    https://www.amazon.ca/Thanko-switch-triple-USFOTS3S-34697/dp/B003IZUJXW

This claims to be using brain waves but its really reading your muscle signatures.  So making certain faces will result pressing certain buttons.  Possibly even moving your head but IDK for sure.

Here is another idea to play WOW only using a mouse.

Another mouse only thing for WOW.

Sorry for all the stuff but hopefully there's something in there you can piece together and help you.

Are you onto something or just on something?

I'd check into some sort of accessibility software. I Googled quickly and found this

I don't know how good this is, but there is voice controlled gaming software there that's pretty cheap. Maybe some other options too? I didn't really look. That's what you want, though.

I'd make sure you double-check with Blizzard, but these solutions shouldn't be considered bots or cheating. They could also have a solution they'd prefer you to use in your situation.

@filmoret that's awesome! Thank you. Never thought of using something controlled by feet or head/muscle movement! I'll look into it. However, if anyone else out there has a software solution for this please advise :)

Ease of Access allows you to setup your computer through windows with voice commands.  We all have it but I've never messed with it myself.

    Check out  https://voiceattack.com/

You still need to use mouse a bit...but think you can play with it till you get a setup that allows you to use your voice/headset and mic to do most of the work for you.

I use it for Elite dangerous and it can do most of the work that keys and mouse/joystick  would do in the game.

Has a trial i believe so you can take a look. I also used it in other games so it just takes getting used to it and figuring it all out to get a good setup working.

    Good luck.

If only moving your fingers causes pain, then you could try some solution that uses your full body movement, like:

    -Kinect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=62wj8eJ0FHw
    -Dance pad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnxCfhSdWPc

You can also use voice commands to control the computer:

    -Tatzi: https://www.tazti.com/index.php

There's also a WoW addon for using skills in sequence. You'll still need to push the button once for every skill, but you can get by just pushing the same button repeatedly

    -GnomeSequencer: https://mods.curse.com/addons/wow/gnomesequencer-enhanced

There are a lot of programmable keyboard and mice which will allow you to record a sequence of keystrokes/button presses, and then run them with one button press, but using something like that might be against rules.

Could also look at getting a macro keyboard, logitech makes a bunch of different ones.  I had to check with blizzard myself before using one to make sure it didn't violate ToS but they said it was fine.    I have an older model the G510 that has 18 buttons on the left side of the keyboard that can store macros, and it came with WoW specific loadouts.

Just play EVE, can use a mouse for most anything except an occasional F1 keypress. ;)

Just wondering have you looked into alternative therapies such as acupuncture or other eastern alternatives?

Hey @JamesCant, I use what you call a "clicker". I found it easy to configure so probably not the one you had trouble with. It's called Chimpeon - https://chimpeon.com

You can configure it to automate your rotation so you just move your character. I get better DPS using Chimpeon than if I play myself!! Pretty cool bit of software :) Hope it helps you out. Can't be nice playing a game and suffering so much pain :(
  • RatManScoopRatManScoop Member UncommonPosts: 3
Oh yeah bud, the clicker also works in Rift and lotro which I prefer to wow. Maybe other games too.

There's a high chance of getting banned if you use something like that.

It's better to buy a macro capable keyboard or mouse. While both do essentially the same thing, if developers start banning people for having a fancy gaming mouse or keyboard it'll create a lot of negative PR for them. Whereas if they ban people who use a bot program like Chimpeon there will be no PR hit.

EDIT: That's not to say that a macro keyboard/mouse could not be against rules. It's just much less likely that developers will take any action, and much more likely that the developers allow it.

Not sure if there is a high chance of being banned but I guess there is a chance. The Chimpeon developers seem to have gone out of there way to minimize detection by a game...

I've been using it for many months and so far all is well :)

    Some ideas
    - wear some kind of gloves to spread out the pressure on your fingers.
    - keyboard with soft keycaps to reduce the force needed to press down a key.
    - keyboard with different/custom keys layouts, so you dont have to move alot to reach every key
    - additional keypad with a small amount of keys that are close to each other
    - touchscreen keyboard
    - foot pedals

Try to avoid any third party software in your games, it wil eventually get you banned.

None of that actually works other than a placebo effect..  You know, otherwise it would be known as "medicine" and not alternative.   You may not agree with me, but science does.

Have you ever tried out one of these contraptions?

Not sure if it will help your problem.  I've heard some people say good things about it and being able to play with one hand.
