On the free server if are leveling, will end up grinding really hard to again a level or paying a few tomes to gain xp. The pvp very p2w base, the pve is like dungeon/allods grinding. Over some quest pretty fun game play is all about what class you pick to make it fun for you. The sub server best pick to avoid ending up feeling like one have to pay more to get better with gear or pvp, if your are thinking about trying it out but a lot less people around then the p2w server.
^ All of this. I love this game, and hate the pay system, because there's almost no activity on the sub server anymore since some changes a few years back. I still play it on the p2w free server, and they have deals now and again that make it viable. 13 bucks for a character boost to ten levels below max level? Yep. 1 dollar for mount stuff? Def. Then there's the benefits of, for example, buying their little CE packs and stuff. It ends up being way less than paying for a sub for the game, or even a sub for WoW, for example, but it leaves the game lacking due to its p2w design. Still, try it, the game is beautiful, so beautiful, and well made considering it was meant to compete with WoW. It's the company handling it financially that really makes it drag. I actually miss the days gpotato ran it, with daily login incentives and stuff.
Note that the servers are international, but many non-English speakers are patient with English speakers, and the in-game emotes can help a lot.
