Anyway, no interest in this or the game until awakening comes out for my witch- sometime next year...

It does sound a bit strange, why would a ranger even use rapiers, when the primary attack form is the bow, and the melee combat, last resort kind of thing, is a dagger, the only reason i can think of is that having an awakened weapon that was a bow would have been too powerful, so they nerfed it by making it melee weapons instead, wonder how many people who have rangers consider the ranger awakened weapon to be a waste of time?

Ranger? Where's her bow? How about a pet? A Ranger with no range weapon? Seems more like a Fencer.

Maybe they are just copying the D&D ranger template to where a ranger character specializes in either a two-weapon (duel wield) or bow combat style. Why not give players the same choices then? I don't play BDO so who knows? It's just a guess and possible explanation at the meager cost of two cents

That's why the entire competitive PvP market belongs to team based arena games - MOBAs

MOBA's barely count as PVP, from outside they look more like grind fests with little in the way of progression, each game being a rinse and repeat of the previous. That kind of thing doesn't work for MMO's because more depth is required in terms of gameplay.
For the kids who play MOBA's, they aren't there because they dislike the PVP in MMO's, they are there because they aren't into MMO's in the first place, and they prefer MOBA style gameplay, in the same way that players who like arena based shooters play CS:GO, Overwatch etc.
If your talking about esports, then thats something else entirely, and games like LoL are a bit dated now, and there are new contenders on the block, either way, thats irrelevant to MMO's also.

I'm going to disagree.

My thought is that this is "this world's" ranger. The rapier is a fast weapon with a decent length, it seems fitting for a bow user, over, say, a broad sword.

The ranger already has a dagger, and the normal method of fighting with Ranger, be it PVE or PVP is being highly mobile, and rapid strikes while moving while keeping out of melee range, because Rangers die pretty quickly if anything gets close enough to hit you, so you move, a lot.
Even on horseback a rapier would be of minimal value, as there also, the bow has more advantages.
Rapier = pointless weapon.

For rangers you would need a massive boost to defence, so unless the weapon reduces the amount of damage you take, then using it would be problematic, because getting close to your target is just something you don't do as a ranger, not if you want to survive.

how about a massive boost to speed and that jumping around thing?

in truth I don't know what the ranger rapier abilities actually bring, I'm just speculating.

In the Peter Jackson movies he uses a shortbow in Moria a couple of times. In the tomb of Balin and when they are running down the crumbling stairs trying to get away from the Balrog. Yeh, I have watched those movies a few times

Tolkien probably doesn't say anything about Aragon using a bow in the books though. Of course I only read those once.
