I returned after being gone for a while. Lasted about a week. Griefing is unavoidable - even in high-sec now. I spent the week dodging prat fleets controlling high-sec gates, getting ganked while mining in high-sec space, and being tackled while running deadspace missions.

I'm sure it's a great online social experiment, but it's not my thing. Cancelled. Won't bother again.

    It was my first ever MMO back when it was first released. Ive tried to return a couple of times over the last decade but the combat is just far too boring for me. 
    I am happy that its still going strong though :)

    Well, its like real life, isn't it? Everybody can kill, scam you as well. You have no protection either. Unless you never leave your cellar where you hide all the time ;)

    CCP your game is dieing, folks are not gonna pay 15$ a month to get ganked. Your business folks are getting nervous. But that's ok Star Citizen will bring you more Subs. LOL

    My guess is you ran into CODE, if so then I'm sure they made your life miserable. (unless you were war decced which is an entirely different matter)

    Thing is, CODE isn't everywhere, so the secret to success in high sec is much like null sec now.

    You learn to mine, mission run or run complexes in more remote systems far from the major market hubs.

    Also, you learn to check who is in your current system, and check the affiliation and sec status of anyone new who jumps in system with you.

    Helps to set CODE to red as well, along with any other known gankers.

    Finally, you can't always fit for yield, better to fly Skiffs or Procs which CODE will frequently ignore as they require much more fire power to gank.

    I tell my corp mates I find high sec more challenging then null these days as its harder to tell who the hostiles are, in null its quite easy and you even have an intel network.

    EVE really doesn't have "safe" space anymore, dangers lurk everywhere which for better or worse, is how CCP wants it.

    Please dont say what I want, because YOU are like that and YOU want to have these things in YOUR games and other features not does not mean that OTHERS feel the same way.

    I want my games to give complete freedom when it comes to this, its fucking war in your games, npc are telling you everyone is going to die but you cant even hit a single player in most games, I want someone stronger than me to be able to kill me and I want to kill someone weaker than me if they are in my way or I just feel like it.

    Also most players on mmorpg.com are not the target audience for any game for obvious reasons.

    No, its not at all like real life where the punishments for those activities are very severe, which helps to keep their occurrence low, even here in Florida where I reside. ;)

    I wish CCP would up the penalties, I don't mind if they let people wantonly scam or kill, but the punishments should range from having your character unavailable for weeks or even months (and you would have to be subbed to burn off your time) to permadeath of known murderers who get caught and killed by other players.

    PVP gank crowd doesnt have the stones for it however.

    It is really interesting how "griefing" is supposedly "unavoidable" by some and other have no issues at all, they do not even know there is some griefing....

    I do not want to believe someone could be that bad, for lack of better word, so I assume the "horror stories" are just made up...

    For myself,it is not so much about my type of game or even greifing,it is more so about the game NOT being a full complete game.
    it is more just a boring space romp around with your only exciting recourse to engage in pvp which is nothing more than some simple boring HUD action.
    Bottom line is that Eve is missing about 90% of what it takes to make a space game really good or perhaps even mildly good,this is like still after all these years still just a ho hum start of a game design.

    hey we have heard many times...land of opportunity,if you can get people to give you money for as little as possible,why not?Personally my morals would get in the way,i would feel bad taking that many millions from people and giving them so little but for some people they are happy to exploit others.

    There is a huge assortment of non PVP activities to do in EVE it boggles my mind to see you write this.

    Ore, ice and moon mining, market trading, exploration, mission running, incursion running, trade hauling, managing POSs, manufacturing and sales, market trading, living in wormholes vs null vs low vs high sec space, dead space complexes, running anoms, drug mfg and sales, scamming, the list goes on and on.

    I'd be interested to see what this other ""90%" would even be, can you share?

    Like I said. Not my kind of game anymore. I don't feel like wasting what little gaming time I have figuring out how to avoid trolls and griefers. Some people dig it, obviously. I don't. 

    It's probably what CCP wants or they would have buffed Concorde to keep pace with improvements to player tech and fleets. It does seem like a long social experiment. They used to brag about having the most realistic market system of any game. I kind of wonder if they eventually see player empires replacing the racial empires. From a dev perspective, that would be an amazing thing (especially considering how vast the game is).

    But not what I'm looking for in a game.

    Wow. It just occurred to me that with CODE they've managed to emulate terrorism. "you think you're safe in high-sec? BOOM!"

    I was originally thinking "protection racket" and "organized crime" because you can buy "indulgences" for safety, but now that I think about it, it's closer to a terrorism simulation.

    They even call it "suicide ganking" and mask it in cult-sounding rhetoric (if you read their website)

    That's the one thing that's missing in this game.  There are corps that are very good at showing new players the ropes.  But there is no mechanic in pointing new players towards them.  I found them by scanning the forums.  The game requires a lot of research if you don't have good friends to help.

    No it's not like real life, because in real life there are laws and deterrents which protect the law-abiding majority.  In Eve, there is little to protect those who want to do their own thing without being attacked.

    I enjoyed a game where I could play in High-sec and be safe, but now it's just a gankfest for the griefers and DOES NOT IN ANY WAY ENCOURAGE NEW PLAYERS.

    I think CCP is in a tough position, they dont want to tick off their core players by making highsec a safer place but they also need to draw in some new blood.  They have been losing players fairly steady since 2014.

    I don't agree with you Kyleran - all activities in Eve are for the purposes of PvP.  For example, the 'exploration' is just to get resources for PvP and to be a target for PvPers.

    It's like 'all roads leading to Rome'.

    I'm not bothered that Empire space is less safe than it was.

    However, what bothers me is Eve's single-minded focus on war.

    The abandoned 'Walking in Stations' project would have fixed that.

    My hopes are with Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen to make a sci-fi universe that's more well-rounded.

    I think a far more practical problem is that CCP is based in Iceland. It must be very difficult to recruit and retain skillful developers.

    Remember that CCP had to abandon the 'Walking in Stations' project. Since then, CCP comes across like a stagnent pond.

    I disagree. In Eve, your options are:

    > Fight
    > Mine to get supplies for fighting
    > 'Exploration' to get supplies for fighting
    > Manufacture to get supplies for fighting.
    > Trade to get supplies for fighting
    > Socialise with the aim of getting ready for fighting

    It's a pity that 'Walking in Stations' failed because Eve could have been so much more.

    Eve was smoke and mirrors even at its height. The number of players were inflated greatly due to people having multiple accounts. While most people still have multiple acounts there are fewer bodies logging into them. Add that to the turnover of 'casual' people who came and went already and its a miracle there are still as many people playing as there are.

    CCP will continue to cater to that core bunch and nothing will change. They did their best to add different content  but it was too late and it didnt retain the people they thought it would. So I am sure they will step back and let it run on auto pilot for awhile and not add a lot of content going forward.

    There are still enough people willing to play and pay to make it profitable I would say but its days of being a potential blockbuster have long gone by. 5 or 6 years ago was when that window shut. Failure to have avatars was the final nail.

    or should say that used to be the target retention many moons ago when i worked (short period) as an ISD

    This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

    EVE vs theme parks, goals are pretty much the same, just a difference of who you fight, not if you fight.

    It really is all in your head, I really don't play EVE to fight much at all, in fact I'm quite adept at avoiding it.

    Why should it be up to CCP in up the penalties?

    I ask because CCP don't enforce any penalties for piracy in 0.0 and yet no one there complains about it.
