How the MOBA revolution began.

1998- Aeon64 creates mod for Starcraft and calls it Aeon of Strife
2003-  Eul creates a map for Warcraft 3 called DOTA  Defence of the Ancients.  *based on Aeon of Strife*
July 2003-  Warcraft 3 expansion The Frozen Throne is released with more modding tools.  *DOTA was not updated*
2003-2004-  Many players created DOTA maps from the expansion.
2003-  Meian and Ragn0r  developed a map and called it DOTA Allstars.  *using the most popular characters from other mods*
March 2004-  Guinsoo became the leader of the DOTA Allstars mod.
Feb 2005-  Guinsoo leaves and eventually begins developing League of Legends 
Feb 2005-  Neichus and IceFrog take over development of DOTA Allstars
2005-  Neichus leaves the team
April 2009-  Demigod releases inspired by DOTA but not much else is known
Oct 2009-  League of Legends release date
Oct 2009- Valve hires IceFrog to develop DOTA 2
2010-  Blizzard tries to stop Valve from using DOTA name
2010-  Blizzard tries to use the DOTA name for themselves Blizzard DOTA is the name of the game
2012-  Blizzard changes the name to Blizzard All-Stars
July 2013-  DOTA 2 release date
Oct 2013  Blizzard All-Stars is changed to Heroes of the Storm
2015  HOTS release date


So here we have it the little guy modders have started the revolution known as MOBA's.  Which consists of over 150 million players.

    I didn't get the hype when it was DOTA, which actually was both in starcraft and WC3. I'm not sure when they switch out the name from Aeon of Strife to DOTA in the starcraft Universe, but I def remember seeing Defense of the Ancients in the custom games during my Starcraft years.

    Again, didn't understand the hype. Maybe it was at that point that games began to drop in quality for me.
