Hero's Song News - John Smedley has sent out the latest backer update for Hero's Song where he lets the community know that Alpha 3 is just around the corner at the end of this month. During Alpha 3, players will be able to try out fifteen of the game's twenty-one classes, though in a very rough state with undoubtedly lots of balance issues that will be resolved later. In addition, multiplayer will be available, basic dungeons, lots of monsters, underworld, loot, points of interest, better AI and more.

was wondering if this game was still going to be a go since they didnt raise the funding, seems like a lot of developers are deciding to just carry on slowly, instead of just giving up on a game. Its kind of a nice thing even though most people get impatient waiting, Steam EA is a perfect example of that and why the forums become hate fests

They made the goal on IndieGoGo flexible, since they have some private investors too, I'd wager the IGG campaign was just for "get it done faster, and better."

What is interesting to me is the decision to list Smedley as the head guy. I am sure it was great in helping to attract investors who were looking for a person with big-time executive gaming experience but how many potential buyers have been put off due to seeing Smedleys involvement in this project?

If Smedley was not involved in the project, I would most likely be following it and would have backed it. Now, when I see news about it I just scoff at seeing his name and move on with no intention of backing it or even watching a gameplay video of it.

That game looks 20 years old already....Do people really want to back something that looks that dated?

Believe it or not, some people like me doesn't care about graphics even a bit. There are more important things to care about. With your mindset we shouldn't play games like Terraria or Minecraft either. Well they look like 20 years old too right?

Yup was very interested in this game till the plans for perma-death. Other than that, I was looking forward to this one.

Permadeath is optional, but there's more to death than game over. We have an overworld and an underworld. When you die in the overworld, you're sent to the underworld. From there, you'll have an opportunity to return to the overworld, but if you die in the underworld, that's the end for that character. Effectively, your first death offers new challenges and adventures, and every hero gets a second chance at life.

Smed or not, looking forward to this game. Being cartoon like, the game won't feel dated. And hopefully will have the Ultima feel with realtime combat.

Also, I'm curious why in 19 years of MMORPGs why someone hasn't done another 2d top down project. Of course I could be wrong, only ones I know are Tibia and Ultima.

I had 61 year old scotch a few months back at a private gaming session.  Wow it was good.  Sorry, I don't know the brand but apparently it was something Richard Nixon loved.

Umm This still confuses me. Is it like death 1-> underworld-> return -> die === death. or is it like death 1-> underworld-> return -> death 2-> and so on ?

At this moment in pre-Early-Access, the rules (subject to change over the next 6-7 months) are: if you die in the overworld, you go to the underworld; if you die in the underworld, game over. So, right now and for Alpha 3, only underworld deaths are permanent.

Thank goodness the majority of gamers do not think like this.  If they did we would not have great games like Terraria and Stardew Valley.

Actually, both of those were great games...but no where near the "majority" of gamers bought or played them.

I think the poster you were quoting was closer to right than you or I are about what people like to play/buy now a days.

Lot of the gamers these days do look at how the game looks first thing. If that does not catch their eyes they just pass them by. They miss a lot of great games, but that's how they are now.

Still do not think it looks as good as it could but game feature wise I am more then excited. Will be supporting you guys a bit further down the road for sure, thanks for the article.

Also, wow, development is much further then I thought it was with Alpha 3 around the corner. Awesome!

Nice, maybe my son and I will enjoy it.  Is there plans to allow early access purchasing on Steam when it goes live?

I'm not with you guys on this one.  I think pixel art is laziness.  I think this whole "retro" thing needs to go because honestly, it isn't that hard to make good looking sprites for these types of games.  They've only been doing it for 20+ years.

The death thing is interesting to me.  Maybe I'll pay closer attention.

I still don't like the Smed being attached thing.

BUT if the game comes out and is fun, I'll give it a fair shake.

Does anything from the dead character carry over, or is it a complete reset?
Regarding items: When you permanently die in a single-player or multiplayer world, your loot falls to the ground. You can load up another character into the world to retrieve your loot, assuming you can return to where your other character died and assuming nearby NPCs have not taken what they want from your other character's remains. In a multiplayer environment, you may not be able to accomplish that feat, but you can try.
  • SomethingUnusualSomethingUnusual Member UncommonPosts: 546
I don't see why people would whine about perma-death this game will have... It's also a single player game, with the option of multiplayer on either your own hosted server, or list of other player's hosted servers.

    Quote:

    How does multiplayer work?

You can either choose to join a server through our server browser or host a server on your machine. Our goal is to get thousands of players having their data stored on a server with hundreds playing at a time (subject to the machine and bandwidth).

Playing Multiplayer you'll see people's names above their heads and be able to chat with them (racial language DOES matter here) and you can adventure together (or fight on a PVP server).

It's not an MMO, it's an action-rpg with multiplayer.
