Massive DDOS attack against DynDNS knocks out ESO, Twitter, Paypal + many more

IselinIselin Member LegendaryPosts: 18,719
It's been going on for several hours and a couple of times it even affected my ability to reach this site, reddit and other places. ESO is still unreacheable.

It's targeted against the major NA East Coast DNS lookup provider, Dyn and is still going.

You can keep track of the DDOS status against Dyn here:

Is this why LOTRO is so laggy?

Unless you are going over DDOS saturated paths as long as DNS works, you shouldn't have any lag.
I was trying to be sarcastic. For some reason LOTRO has been laggy for years despite upgarding to better servers. They seem unable or unwilling to do anything about it.

I've manually changed all of my computers to use Google's DNS servers.  I haven't had any problems all day, even accessing sites that are based in the northeast US which is where the attacks hit hardest and I also live in central Texas where the attacks were second worst.

It's effecting a lot of sites. I couldn't even access MMORPG.com earlier "DNS Error: The DNS address to the site you are trying to access is not responding." Though I'm not sure it is directly linked to my specific error.

Yes. Thank goodness for the world police and universal laws that apply everywhere... oh wait, I'm thinking of a scifi movie.

Well if the attack is coming from outside of USA that would be a problem for sure.

Well it's becoming an increasingly effective way to potentially de-stabilize whole countries during brief but possibly critical time periods. It's not like some of these haven't already been government sponsored.

    That definitely worked... today.

Thank goodness we at least own the top level DNS servers in the USA...

Or did before we recently passed off control to an international authority.

I wonder if that is real.  If so then the middle of the USA is being attacked at this timestamp.  7:47 EST  I mean really that map is showing third world countries as point of attacks.

I think he was being sarcastic. LOTRO is always laggy.

EDIT: Just saw your response @flizzer. Not sure how I missed it. ;-)
