So is this free update for the base game or expansion? I refused to buy an expansion for a game still in early access.... does this mean none of the updates are applicable to me now?

    That's a base game update.

They pretty much develop all of this early access games derivated or DLC of ARK at the same time.

Can anyone comment on the current state of performance? Last I tried playing it was poorly optimized.

The updates are applicable to you. You don't have to own the DLC for this. I think they just made the DLC to gather money for the lawsuit they had to deal with. Every update since then has all been for the base game.

This is a neat idea, but I kind of wish it was an infinitely large map like Minecraft, I know the tech isn't there for endless maps in UE4 yet but it would just be a cool thing. I loaded up a new map and it was really different than any other spawn point I've encountered, it was cool. I'm happy they are still making this kind of content / large changes for the game.

If anything, procedural generation is one of the biggest things holding back the survival genre. Until programming becomes far more sophisticated than it is now, a well-designed map will always be better than a randomized one.

It's still pretty poorly optimized. I can run it on ultra at about 25 to 35 FPS with a 390x 16 gigs of decent ram and a 3570k. My processor is holding me back, but I'm not sure if that's all with ARK. My friend has a really beast setup with a 1080, one of the newer i7 6 series chips, and 16 gigs of ddr 4 ram and it's hardly running on ultra as well. It's not a very well optimized game in general and I don't know if it will ever be. But if your okay with tweaking settings around and not having it look the best it's possible to make it run fairly well on most PC's.

The game still runs lilke a pig.  Not giving this developer one more dime!
