I checked back in to neverwinter after being gone since launch. However since its been so many years my old characters were so foreign to me I wanted to just start over instead.

WHELP! No open char slots, so either delete my old char or buy a new slot just to try out the game again. What a strange business model...are they really making so much money on new char slots that they need to do this?

I just want to test out the game from level 1 without destroying all my past progress. wtf and sigh

That's the problem with this game. Nickle and dime at every corner, no happy sub option, you'll still be left wanting. I also had a great time at release but realized quickly it wasn't at my price point while juggling other MMOs.
Happily playing Vanilla and BC WoW, again, since September 2016.

This is one of the biggest "if only" games out there.

It's an ongoing collision of possibility v missed opportunity. The monetization model has been discussed at length, and is enough on it's own to deter people from giving the game any extended time.

But it's not the only deterrent by any means.

Class capabilities are adjusted in seemingly random acts of buff & debuff. Bugs are ever present in the game, then fixed - often with the result that other ones are introduced.
There doesn't seem to be a broad outlook with class performance. It's all unexpected change and reaction, rather than a sophisticated review and balance.

Consequently players' frustrations mount, with the inevitable parting of the ways as the end result.
