Another month, another FFXIV patch: 3.45 brings gifts including a new season of ranked PvP and the next part of the relic weapon quest chain. But the most significant addition is the update to Palace of the Dead, the “deep dungeon” that debuted a couple of patches ago. Previously limited to 50 floors, it now goes on for a whopping 200. But where exactly are we headed? “Hellsward,” the unlock screen declares, playing with the title of the last expansion.

Seems like the dev team was channeling Sean Murray on the 200th floor...

Palace of the Dead really revitalized FFXIV for me. The upper floors actually get me feeling at times like I did in dungeons back the the Good Old Days. When mistakes were scary (if not fatal), when you always hoped the next turn might hold something great, or at least not murder you, and where you had tight moments that you barely squeaked through by good gameplay and smart thinking. Floors 100+ are great for "four man raiding" especially for those who aren't into the whole "memorize this dance till you can clear the fight" shtick.

Actually you have to progress from 1-100 without completely wiping even once in order to access 101+ in a premade.

There is a ranking page for PotD solo (& groups):
    http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/ranking/deepdungeon/?solo_party=solo

    Now, the article.
I disagree with ".....to trudge through the main scenario in order to see the best this game has to offer..."

One of the main strong points of ffxiv is the main scenario. It's the most story driven mmo out there. The quality of the writing is second to none, and is a cornerstone of 'the best this game has to offer'.

The reviewer needs to approach this game with a better understanding of ffxiv's focus, of where it's consistently aimed at.

If they want to rush to end play then there are plenty of other level in a week, or even in an hour, (token anyone?) games out there.

This is ffxiv, it's one of the highest quality story driven mmo's out there. The best in my opinion. Long may that continue.

You can start from 51-100 as well. Also the rules are that you can't have any party KO's (party wipe) going through those floors. And if you wipe at 100+ you are done. I'm currently at 141 with a 3-man group and its been a blast!

The speed of the mole and the power of steel is my weapon

The Secret World is all about the story.

The Secret World is all about the story.
Good job it's not about the combat......   :-)

Of course other mmo's have story driven content.

For some games the story is little more than a vehicle to get you to the next npc/zone. But for others, FFXIV, TSW and now SWTOR, it's one of the main characteristics of the game. So you wouldn't expect a review of these to say 'get past the main scenario to enjoy the best content'.

For some games that may be accurate, but definitely not for those above.

It would be nice if you didn't have to start at floor 51 to challenge floor 100+ though. For an organized group with +99/99 aether stats, 51-140 is pretty much busy work. Just wiped in the 150s the other night from being both stingy with our limited items and then using them in a panic (and incorrectly) when things started to go south.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.
