Yep, free for a whole year... although I can't help but wonder if there's some sort of handicap like maybe limited playtime? It's kinda sparse on that info... ahh well, i'm gonna check it out anyway. Good times in Planetside back in the day.

For anyone who's not sure, click 'Join the PLanetside Reserves' on www.planetside.com.  It's pretty much the full game apart from the limited battle rank.  But that's the beauty of Planetside.  Even at the lowest battlerank you can still have as good a weapon as at the highest rank.

Not only limited battle Rank, you also can't use / buy some kind of weapons as mentiont in an early press release.

You can play for free until 4/27/2007 (should be the right date) then the period is ending, it doesn't depend when you subscribe, but can upgrade to a full account any time ::::01::.

The servers are simply to emtpy so they try to get some more people on the game and maybe some new subscribers.

Man the people at Sony must be freaking out, things just are not going as planned for them.  I am pretty sure if you asked the execs a year or two ago what their future looked like I bet they saw SOE as a giant in the industry with major MMO markets tied up with Sony games.

Now another desperate attempt to keep a dying property alive just a bit longer.

Sure they got some good games but they have not been nearly as good as they looked on paper - no one would have bet against the line up of - Star Wars, EverQuest 2, EverQuest, and The Matrix - throw in Planetside as a rare FPS MMO and some other stuff and it looks like it could not fail.

But it has failed to live up to what it could have, and should have been.  I am not sure they can ever really recover the Star Wars audience they have now alienated.  EverQuest is dying (still good but dying) EverQuest 2 is solid but not the mega-hit it should have been and the Matrix is a mediocre title at best.

Planetside was a fun distraction back when they used to do 14 day trials and then you could get it out of your system.  I don't really see this latest ploy helping SOE get any new subscribers.

    ---MMO EXPERIENCE:---
    WoW - 06-2006 to current
    COV - 40 Corruptor - 10-2005 to 04-2006
    COH - 50 Scrapper - 04-2004 to 04-2006
    EQ2 - 35 Barb Berserker - 12-2004 to 04-2005
    EQ1 - 55 Barb Warrior - 2000, 2001
Tried: DaoC, DDO, Auto Assault, SWG, Lineage II

I dunno man, I signed up for free PS and played it for a week, and then, seeing that I have a limited arsenal I wanted to kickass so bad I resubscribed again. I also thought this move as a desperate measure, but it turns out to be a smart marketing move. You basically get a big boos in players, which means current subscribers are happy becuase there are a lot of people to kill, plus u get to show off your product to new potential customers, plus (this is perhaps the biggest plus) you kinda "tease" them with all the different content (weapons/vehicles) without realy limiting gameplay. Meaning, you CAN experience everything, but only in small doses. Thats what happend to me, at first, I thought id be satisfied running around with limited armament, but with time, i realized i missed having all those wehicles and weapons together and not spread out on dif chars.

I think this was a right move by SOE (for a change). We will see the long term effect in a few months. I dont know why SOE doesnt beef up publicity for PS, its a solid game, like CounterStrike, that will always keep people playing it becuase you cant "win"  this game. Advertisement means more people, more people means more money, more money means more new content, more new content means more people...
