Tired of settling for games that dont come close to what swg pre-cu had ? I know I was. I had tried....
AO, EVE, SoR, FoM, AA, and several smaller MMO and nothing could come close enough to satisfy my lust for the features of swg.
Anyway, I found out about Roma Victor. The game has everything (excpet sci fi) swg had. I think its also important to note that this game is made by a small independent developer who could use our support. Folks complain about lack of innovation in today's MMO's, well here's one that isnt dumbed down.
The game cost me roughly $26 to pre-order (converted) and no monthly feee. You can purchase in-game content and their version of currency I believe.
Features
skill based system - no levels whatsoever
crafting - extremely complex crafting that is heavily player interdependent on others for making products. For example, you might be a crafter of spear shafts which a weaponsmith would need to complete crafting of a spear. There are far more specialized crafting professions than even swg had.
housing - one difference here is RV homes can be destroyed. You can hire npc guards to protect them
And much much more. Here's a link to their features...

Was it you I remember dissing SOE for talking about making a future game of theirs work in a simillar way to Roma Victor?
Buying in-game stuff with RL money that is...
Definitely been looking forward to a couple games that seemed innovative. This one, Chronicle and Trials of Ascension. Don't know about pre-ordering though. Thats always a concern with smaller companies. I was considering it, but the graphic were a bit concerning. They're not awful, but they could definitely be better.
I assume you're getting access to the beta now? I know your binded by the NDA, but let me know what I should do :P
Yeah I heard the same thing about the graphics, which is why I didn't totally dismiss it. Are they still projecting the release date listed on here?
Umm sorry... how is the "economy" player run when you can buy items AND MONEY for rl cash? That's not an economy worth being part of, imo. It's going to cause incredible price inflation.
Like I said in your OTHER thread about this (how many forums did you post this in anyway?) I'm not bothering with RV till it's been on shelves a while. Probably something like 6 months or so and only if there's a free trial.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
early July
and pre-ordered gets access 2 weeks early (mid june) plus immediate beta testing
Seeing is believing. I'll wait till a trial of sorts is available. Many things look good on papter, every game has die-hard fans, but I prefer to test myself, to see if it fits me.
But it's good to know, the original SWG concepts are still being tried.
For those of you who are looking to Roma Victor as your next home are going to be in for a serious rude awakening.

I saw some of this game, read up on it. I does seem to be a bit more of the sandbox type of game that old SWG was, but to be honest I'm a bit worried about player base size with this game. It isn't very popular from what I understand, and depending on how many servers they put up, it could feel not so "massively" multiplayer.

Roma looks kinda of cool and I'll probably try it.
I'm waiting for Hero's Journey though for certain. Besides, a former guildmate of mine from SWG works for them. He's keeps saying "At least SOE is teaching me what not to do."
I still miss the old days on Corbantis though.

i am glad you found something to be excited about, it just doesn't grab me.
The real life coins for in game items bug me as well. As far as doing something now na im floundering at the moment. Maybe just plug in consoles for a while see what else is down the road

It isn't going to be on shelves. It is digital download only and the preorder is only something like $35 U.S. It also has no monthly fee so there will be no free trial. And while I don't agree necessarily with the selling of in-game credits for real world money the fact is that gold farmers do it in every other game already. At least with the company doing it they can control the value of the ingame credits. Its also a player run economy from the standpoint that the best pieces aren't looted, but made by players.
You also don't have to buy credits if you don't want to and they said they are going to monitor how many credits are in the system and adjust the real world price to influence inflation issues somewhat. You can still earn credits by doing missions, killing things, etc just like every other MMO, but if you want more credits for something like an elaborate estate in a prime location for instance you can buy them rather than killing a zillion rats or whatever.
I think this game has real potential, but it seems a little too experimental in some areas so I'm a little leery at the moment. If there is any backlash to be had though it will be from gold farming companies that won't be able to overmanipulate the system like they can in other games.
You can't buy in game items, only in game credits. there is also a limit on the amount of credits you can purchase per month...something equivalent to a montly fee for a normal MMO or perhaps a few bucks more if you so desire.
This is definately my next game, preordered the first day it was available.
Here's the problem I see. Folks complain about wanting swg pre-cu features yet they dont want to take a chance on a game that implements those same features.
SWG failed with its sandbox skill system. If developers like Roma Victor fail also, why would any future developer design a similiar system.
I know its kinda the chicken and egg thingie but if nobody buys this game, the money to implement everything we want may not be there to finish it. Take Face of Mankind for example, small time company that just didnt have the funds to make the game decent faded out. If nobody gives RV a shot and has the attitude of wait and see, it may never materialize.
Others have commented that the game may not be so "massive" so they wont play it. Well, it everyone has that opinion nobody will jump in to play.
Games like EVE are the exception folks. For every EVE that slowly grows and improves, there are a hundred Face of Mankinds out there.
I for one will take the chance. Isnt it worth it if the game even delivers half of what we miss from SWG ?

The problem I have with RV is setting pure and simple. The whole 'Ancient Rome' thing just isn't doing it for me. Beggers probably shouldn't be quite this choosey, but dang SOE/LA for setting the bar so high, and then yanking the event. It's just torture to know I want THAT..and be told, "You can't have it anymore because we decided you should want this instead."
