Today marks the official launch of Rift’s third expansion – Starfall Prophecy. Bringing with it new zones set on a comet hurtling through space and time, new legendary abilities, a new level cap, the new Planar Fragments system, Active Upgrades new dungeons, a new raid, Planar Assault Adventures, Fortress Sieges, and more. We spoke to Trion’s Simon Ffinch and Chris Junior one final time about the expansion as they toured us around some of the new stuff.

It's one of those games I wish I started earlier. Wanted to try this for a while but it seems so overwhelming with all the expansions etc. Feels like I would be behind so far if I tried. Also, not sure how I feel about trion....

    I have to be honest.
Rift vs Archeage is like night and day.
I struggle to understand how the same company can have the best Cash Shop (Rift) and the worst one (Archeage) at the same time.
    Talk about consistency.

Game wise Rift is very similar to EQ2, Hartman designed both so no surprises here.
If you like EQ2, Rift is a good alternative but as for the Daybreak game, starting from scratch in Rift can be quite overwhelming due to all expansions.

That's because Rift was designed by Trion and was built as a sub-based game. Archeage was developed by XL Games and despite the optional sub, it leans heavily on it's cash shop.

Hold on a second. I have played rift for a long time and it's really not that overwhelming. Basically a leveling experience until 65 then the new xpac begins and takes you to 70. Lots of good tools for new people to learn as well. My advice is just give it a go. Great game. And in terms of mmos on a side note, I love being overwhelmed by new stuff.

Trion is a strange company. Games that they just publish they manage very poorly (or are forced to manage poorly by the developers). On the other hand, games they develop (rift, atlas reactor, etc) always turn out fantastic.

Just paid my annual sub of £60 this will have to wait until a sale I'm afraid.

Rift and EQ 2 expansions on same day, and nobody seems to care

I would start RIFT again if I didn't have to buy like 12 packets, same with EQ2

I checked out the Rift store because it got me curious.
Back then i stopped playing after Storm Legion and to me it looks like for the total experience i would have to get

    -Ascend Soul DLC              34.99Eur
    -Nightmare Tide DLC           59.99Eur
    -Planetouched Wilds DLC    79.99Eur
    -Starfall Prophecy             39.99Eur

    = 214,96Eur  total

    or

    -Ultimate Rift Edition           149.99Eur
    -Ascend Soul DLC              34.99Eur
    -Starfall Prophecy             39.99Eur

    =224.97Eur total

Add +20Eur to both packages if i'd go for the Starfall Prophecy "Deluxe Edition" that includes the lvl65 boost.

Strangely, the second package including the so called "ultimate edition" does not safe me any money like an ultimate edition should, but is in fact even more expensive than stacking up all DLCs separately.

For obvious reasons i'll skip my personal conclusion here.

So, this is indeed "One Last Look At Starfall Prophecy" for me as well -and not only before launch, but altogether.

To get all of the souls you can get the essentials pack for $50 but you can only buy it in game.

People still post comment like this?

Seriously, if there's not enough people playing a MMO (that could be anything), that MMO will get canned obviously.

I agree with Volgore, I would purchase the expansion and play Rift if they somehow made the prior dlc available at a reasonable price.  Just a horrible marketing decision because at this point they are only going to be selling to the existing player base.  Most people who used to play Rift are just going to scoff at the price to become current.

You have to wonder how a company like Trion can continue to exist with such a subpar marketing team?

The population is suffering atm. To my knowledge, Rift does not provide information on their population so players have to speculate by the obvious events within it. And the obvious number of friends you played with that don't log on anymore.

The game recently announced that at long-in, they would place players on one shard so in one location it might appear abundant, instead of the split shards they'd normally be on. In addition, the game already had a small following but now has even less. This is obvious by the lack of players in their f2p leveled areas 1-55. New players drop in here and there and complain that these areas are empty. There is no one to play with in them or meet. The majority of the population seems to be a small group that has already done the f2p content and likely wouldn't want to do it again. So there isn't any traction of new players coming in to complete it either. When new people finally drop in, they pretty much zoom to end game where the older players are concentrated.

It's true, they're basically using a mega-shard technique, without simply merging all shards. So it is "crowded" on the server where they place you, but it's decidedly more "dead" on my main server: Wolfsbane. Still, really liking Starfall so far. Much better than Nightmare Tide, aesthetically.

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

Hmm, I was thinking that I could just buy Starfall Prophecy and jump right in and try out the Primalist Calling. But after reading this, it seems that I'd have to buy Starfall Prophecy and the Ascended Soul DLC. And that doesn't even give me all of the available souls in the game or earring slots?

Await the hotfixes and patches before trying it out at the moment. The new expansion and 64-bit client have apparently generated more than a few glitches and bugs.
I logged in a little bit ago and have already fallen through the world, discovered all minion functions are disabled so it looks like you don't have any, and can't walk on or be blocked by non-terrain structures. (floors, buildings, etc have no functioning collision flag for me)

Not a bug but a change to crafting, salvaging is now out so those salvaged components are now grey vendor trash, just sell them and free up some inventory space.

The devs are working on it, but of course we have no idea how long before they get things cleaned up, but they tend to do these pretty fast, so I expect it'll be mostly normal by this evening.

Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...

My problem with Rift is their lore and story areas are done so sloppily. We still have no conclusion from the base game's plot on a lot of relevant plot threads. It's like they just shove new enemies and characters into the game without adding any cohesive outcomes or conclusions from past questlines. Compared to what's been coming out recently, Rift is just way behind in how it presents its lore and story.

Heh, never played Rift by yourself do you, boy?

No one playing in 1-55 zones anymore because it's FRIGGIN OBVIOUS that f2p zones are ranged from 1-65 (NT zones, mind you). Even with IA, most players choose to 65 IA and would be upscaled to level 65.

Below 65 zones are mostly irrelevant because people are busy gearing their toons to 65, welcoming the SP expac.

Loved the game when it first came out think it was max level 60 I even missed out on a promotion because I was so addicted to it.

I won't be returning because I ain't paying 200+ for all the expansions.

You know they give you an instant lvl 65 boost potion when you buy the expansion, so you really only have to level 5 levels if you don't feel like going through every ounce of early content.
  • CoolitCoolit Member UncommonPosts: 661
    meh.

I once cheered Trion and RiFT on but with lack of proper engine fixes(shadow patch, SLI) and gear in the cash shop regardless of its level plus the cost to enter being so high there are simply better, cheaper and more entertaining alternatives these days.

It is good to see there is still a company that knows how to make a real expansion and not some dlc that has content you can play through in a couple of hours.
