Too bad you have to pay $150+ just to get a normal amount of content, not including the money you have to spend for P2W.
You can get WoW and all expansions for half that.
Rift isn't overwhelming, once they bring back Instant Adventures (if they haven't yet, because it was broken and disabled), everyone speed levels immediately to the cap. On top of that, you have tons of fun solo quests and dungeons, but you don't have to do them all. The beauty of it, is you can do what you want. You can do warfronts (pvp) or not, you can do Chronicles or not, you can raid or not.
Don't feel overwhelmed, if you don't want to do everything you can just grind IA like most people and enjoy only the newest expansion!!
You don't have to pay $150, you only have to buy Starfall Prophecy, the other expansions are free. You don't need to own the souls, because plenty of souls are free. The only thing you'd have to pay for is a tanking mage or a healing warrior/scout. It isn't like you can't just play a Cleric/Warrior and tank, or play a Cleric/Mage (choloromancer) for healing. In fact, Clerics have like 6 different entirely free healing set-ups!
Rift is awesome in terms of the new zones and new quests, but the Instant Adventures and instances were disabled and broken. Hopefully, IA's might be back up today or soon (tm). Oh, and I didn't experience the bugs and glitches, so I don't think i'm running the 64 bit client? Just avoid that and stick to 32 bit, if it is still broken.
Why do you think you need to buy the Ascended souls? No ,you don't. You can buy the Primalist if you want it, but none of the souls are required. Only Starfall, or you can't level past 65, or play in any of the new zones.
You don't need earring slots to play, and you don't need all of the souls!!! Just pick which ones are the most fun and interest you the most, and earring slots can be unopened for 50k void stones (along-with Planewalker title to equip half of Nightmare Tide Equipment). It is not hard to grind 50k void stones (at all). In fact, the weekly cap on void stones is set to 40k. You can grind that out in about 2 and a half weeks and un-lock that for free!
Gotta say this, a new expansion launched everyone is 65-70 because Starfall Prophecy gave you a level 65 boost. There aren't going to be people hanging out in low level zones 1-64. Many have been level locked at 65 for awhile now, and everyone is excited to finally be leveling again. Of course, most people are already level 70 and wanting to do end-game content, that is what usually happens when people are quick to speed level and jump into the new dungeon/raids! It doesn't mean the game is dead, it just means people aren't playing their low level alts right now.
Everquest 2 gives you every single expansion when you buy Kunark Ascending, so what are you talking about here? You have to buy mercenaries, but they aren't required, you can buy Beastlord or Channeler but it isn't required, you can buy Freeblood or Aerakyn but it isn't required, and you can buy RMT on the market shop none of it is required. Just buy the newest expansion and you are good to go.
