Ascension, the latest update for EVE Online, brings in a whole host of industrial updates. We sent capsuleer and greasemonkey Gareth “Gazimoff” Harmer to investigate.
Comments
The industrial changes are pretty huge. You can solo mine in an asteroid belt in a Rorqual now and compress the ore while you're mining. Early calculations say that, with good skills, a single Rorq can mine as much as five players in Hulks... which is ridiculous. Also, there's a new module for the Rorqual that makes it invincible to damage for four minutes, so in case you get caught by surprise you can fire that up and give your alliance mates time to come save your ass.
Only if you don't have far reaching goals because those will be several months to a year+ away. There are few things that aren't SP gated (market pvp, exploration, suicide ganking, ...)
It's hard to tell what kind of person you are and what would be "fun" to you so give it a try see what barriers YOU run into.
Find a good corp and you will have great help. The game is only difficult if you insist on playing it solo.
EVE is also a game where long term planning and setting milestones and goals is meaningful. You can literally pick up EVE as a 2nd "job" if you choose to get that involved or dip your toe in over time. Again, with it going F2P, can't hurt to try.
What exactly is clueless and what's nonsense in my post? I told him that alot of SP will take time, there are things early in the game and he can try it for himself.
Please take your dismissive attitude elsewhere.
Pro tip: In eve you will be killed mercilessly, many times, and with glitches/bugs if needbe. This game is about trolling, stealing, pirating. If you dont pay the big guys 'tributes' theyll just wardec you and pvp your 5man corp to death. Thats the kind of people that play this. There is no protection even in empire space. Even moreso now that people can have so many free alts. Was bad enough when they paid for it, now they can have unlimited number of botted accounts.
This is what EVE is: botting and exploiting. If youre into that then great. If not, its not worth the time it takes to learn the game.
A job that doesn't pay, also. Think about you posted. Games are supposed to be fun and an escape not a job.
With this much misinformation in one post it seems to be the logical conclusion.

Fun is what children have when riding on the swings in the playground.
As was stated, participation in EVE ranges from my more casual approach (couple of hours a day) to some folks who I think have transferred their consciousness into a jump clone.

Honestly, if you die a lot in EVE, then you haven't spent even the most basic amount of time figuring out ways to avoid PVP. There are literally dozens of ways to avoid fights, and three ways to force a fight. Use scouts to check the path ahead of you, use cloaking devices, use safe spots, use intel channels, and above all, don't play the game in Empire. Honestly the least safe place to live in EVE is the space patrolled by empire police. Join a null sec corp and live with them. Never safer.
You say that like it's a bad thing. CCP doesn't hold our hands and police our activities to death like other games. How about you try pirating? It's pretty damn fun. I wouldn't even want to live in an EVE without trolling and stealing, it's what makes it unique among other games. It's a social game, the verbal war is just as important as the ship combat. If you can discourage your enemy with words before the first shot is fired, then you've already won. Honestly, North Korea has been trolling the entire world for fifty years. It's not just an in-game occurrence.
EVE is a social game. Learn to be social. If you have a 5 man corp, then join a 200 man alliance and now you have people to help keep you safe. Yes, there is a hierarchy in EVE, and yes sometimes you'll have to buy someone off. It's part of the game. During the fountain war, the biggest alliance in EVE ended up paying someone off, I think they were called Black Legion, because they were disrupting their war activities and supply lines so much. It was the biggest alliance in EVE at the time paying off a far smaller and less influential alliance. The street goes both ways.
During my early days in EVE, I had a production station that I had set up and I forgot to fuel the tower, so the shields went down. Someone started attacking it and it had billions of work in it. So I messaged the guy and offered him a billion ISK to walk away. We agreed, I transferred the money to a well trusted third party escrow player, he stopped attacking and after my shields were back up he got paid. It's a game of negotiation, admitting your mistakes, paying for your mistakes and making friends to ensure that your mistakes aren't too costly.
There shouldn't be 100% protection in Empire space. Empire space is training wheel space, meant to give you just enough protection to learn the game and then join a corporation and go live in the wild west of null sec. I thought that players could have unlimited free alts too, until I discovered from a friend yesterday who had some free accounts, that a player cannot log into any free accounts until they've logged out of all of their paying accounts. You're also limited to one free account logged on at a time. So no, there are no unlimited bots.
No worries. As long as we provide the info to the poster that was asking about Eve instead PvP-ing with our different views on the matter

I suppose if we had something better than text on a screen, I could have done the Dr. Evil "air quotes" around the job comment. It was mean to signify the amount of time and effort you put into it.
And as for fun, that's subjective. No one in this World can TELL you what to have fun with, it's entirely up to you.
So yeah, I did think about what I posted And I stand by it.
1: You agree that dying in Eve will happen often and that you have to actively hide from people to avoid being put in PvP against your will. You also agree that Empire space (the place all newbie players start out) is the worst place of ganking/pvp there is.
2: You agree that the commonality of Eve players is to troll/pirate/steal/corporate espionage/gank. Its less about building things and more about tearing them down. There is no law in Eve. Everyone is lawless. I remember being in one corp that would take out a few bombers just to bum rush a nullsec base to bomb a few ships outside. Why? "For the fun of it". There was no objective, no reason to punish those poor people (or were they bots?).
3: You agree that the only way to avoid being forced into fighting a stronger opponent is to either pay them tributes or join them. Theres no neutral ground in Eve. Either youre ganked against by superior numbers/skill or youre the one ganking weaker people. I will admit the only time I really had fun was in some faction warfare (Where you knew who your enemy was, and you went there looking to fight). I never made it to really large battles.
4:I was wrong about the unlimited free alts. It doesnt void the fact that people pay and its generally acceptable to have multiple alt accounts/bots to gank others with no repercussion to themselves. Its common for people to hide these alts in different corporations to avoid any accountability.
- I said no such thing. In fact, I said exactly the opposite. I said that if you die to another player in PVP in EVE, then you're not using that grey lump three feet above your posterior bits. It's painfully easy to survive months, even years, without dying. There are far more way to avoid PVP than to be caught by it. Also, almost no one at all ganks newbies. The gankers are looking for a killboard return on their investment and noob ships and frigates are a shitty return. High sec gankers look for juicy targets like T2 miners and haulers carrying entirely too much ISK worth of goods.
- Congratulations, you listed five activities out of literally hundreds that players in EVE participate in regularly throughout every day. No, the only commonality in EVE is that the other people are playing EVE. Then you quite ridiculousy state that there is no law in EVE, which just shows me that you either never played it, or you got ganked once and quit. You see, societies cannot exist without laws, and people who group together in societies, even online societies will create laws to govern themselves. EVE is absolutely full of laws created and, for the most part, abided by the players who join those groups.
- Not only did I not agree to that, I offered up several other options. How about instead of paying them tribute, you pay some mercenaries to kill them? How about instead of joining the bullies, you join their enemies and let that group help protect you? Then you go on to describe the nature of war. People don't engage in conflict unless one side believes they can win, meaning they think they have an advantage.
- Yes, some players have alts to gank. Very preceptive. The majority of players, however, do much more benign tasks with their alts. Two good friends of mine have upwards of 10 mining alts. I have an industry and jump freighter alt that can build just about anything in the game, and can haul all my stuff around for me so that I'm not begging someone else.
When you want to see the negative, then you'll go looking for it, and that's what you've done here with EVE.they are improving the effects .anis, well yeah i would hope so,only took them 10+ years...sigh.You should realize that in space it is sooooo empty that pulling off super nova type effects should have been there 10 years ago.
There has never been a purpose with this game, your purpose to pvp yeah so basically a fps genre, something we do NOT pay ongoing fees to,yet somehow CCP has managed to rip people off for years because they are so in dire need of space ship type gaming.
The way skills are done is also too cheap a design, should have been done way better. This game NEEDS planets to land on,housing, walk around stations,it needs to be a COMPLETE game not just pvp in space.I said it years ago, many years ago, this game would have been suited if they took all those millions and revamped the game onto a better engine so they could slowly build the game players deserve.I also said it years ago,if people support mediocrity game design, then why would CCP want to improve, well they won't,they will keep selling you as little as they can get away with.
This is why Chris Robert's is pulling of the scam of a lifetime, people see that game as doing many things Eve is not,i expect if SC ever finishes most will jump ship from CCP.It will be fault of CCp,they could have easily improved Eve to the game it should be by now, they have had the money, lots of it,so no excuse anymore.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I don't blame people for saying EvE is a bad MMO in most cases. EvE doesn't even play like other sandboxes IMO.
