So I rolled a stamina sorcerer. The AOE is magnificent, you can cut through trash mobs like nothing else... but the single target damage seems to be lacking. Even if you get dots up with bow and then dw, the single target damage is poor.
Unfortunately aoe is generally reserved for trash that offer little threat, and when you see a significant fall-off of dps for single-target mobs (generally bosses) then all your eggs are in the wrong basket.

I thought everybody loved stam sorc... but I haven't done one yet

But don't discount all those dots ticking away while you use ST abilities on a boss - they add-up. You get Endless Hail, Poison Injection, Hurricane, Rearming Trap and Rending Slashes going then basically you weave light attacks and spam Rapid Strikes, rinse and repeat.
Until you unlock Meteor from the Mage's Guild, for group play you'll be using the Greater Storm Atronach and/or Ballista for your ultimates.
And of course a good monster mask/shoulder combo and set gear like Viper that procs extra damage often off any type of damage also helps quite a bit.
I play magicka templar and sorc as well and they are much more laid back with big ST abilities. But my magicka DK and NB both feel very similar to the stamsorc in being very busy with lots of small damage ticking.

He calls his magicka DK DPS build Laceration and his magicka NB DPS is called the Umbra
