I grew up not far from Chicago and while deep dish is fine I prefer the thin and crispy pizza I grew up on back in the 60s and 70s.

We have thin crust pizza in Chicago. I can't recall 100% so this might be off by years, but I believe my first deep dish pizza was in 1978. Not including that "pizza" we had in grade school which is more like what you wrote about.
In Los Angeles, I have found two amazing pizza places in the past 30+ years. Albano's on Melrose blvd, which is out of business. Little Toni's in North Hollywood is the best pizza in LA.
