Everything ESO has released thus far has all had a unique story tied to it, new NPCs for us to admire or hate. Coming next year to ESO is an update that, will introduce content to Tamriel that I have no idea how they’re going to include an ongoing story for and that’s, Player Housing.

The paradigm of world housing with instanced interiors/portals is exactly how EQ2 does housing. Two friends can own the "same" house. You find the specific player houses by searching the player name when entering the house. A window pops up when clicking on the door and there are a few options - tour, buy, visit, etc.

I would like to see them use phasing and their single server tech to keep zones current.

I doubt it will anywhere in the same league as EQ2 even though that's where they should be drawing there. inspiration from.

I have a feeling the housing isn't going to give you the most freedom but its going to be cool. I just wished for housing as soon as I started getting into eso and didn't ever read that they mentioned months earlier the planned target date for housing is next year.
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

i wonder who will be the first to reach DAoC's housing system.
    i mean.. seriously, that's 15 years now ^^

seriously, what good is a house without neighbors!
no one waking you up at 3am,
no one to take your parcell's when you arent at home,
no one who will watch you while you "build" your awesome stuff in the garden.....

The first picture is of the Skyrim House in Solitude.

Love that house. I hope it has the same detail in the online game.

DAoC housing sucked. End of story.

Just give players the customization options that they have in EQ2 and many will be happy.

    Wall types
    Floor types
    Ceiling types
    Step types

Complete control where things are placed

    Trophies from enemies to display

    Weapon and Armor racks

    Dummies to display gear

    Etc.

I also believe they should have some houses / mansions that are available for Guild Only purchase.

OK, I'm going off-topic and playing Clippy for a moment...

Use, not utilize. Stop utilizing utilize when you mean use. ;-)

Use means to take an appropriate action for the intended purpose. Utilize means to take an unusual action for an intended purpose.

You use a can opener to open a can of beans. You utilize a screwdriver to open a can of beans when you have no can opener available.

Not making a value judgement about you, just pointing it out. It is one of the most common mistakes in word usage and for some reason it just grinds on my nerves. ;-)

    /ontopic

Great article! I've been wondering how housing will work as well. I really hope they get it right because it's my favorite game right now.

portable hole housing. Nothing that would constitute real estate in game. Better than nothing, but not much.

Looking forward to ESO housing. I would like a short or long quest to obtain housing first.

Sounds like a poll for who has the best housing is coming up. :-) My vote would go to SWG great planet and space vessel housing. Being able to pack-up your house and move it to another planet was the best.

I think it'll add a nice little extra something but it's not where I would be focusing.  If a game doesn't launch with Housing then IMO leave it out.  I guarantee you there's actual gameplay elements that need work more :P

EverQuest II has kept housing "relevant" by being able to sell from your home to allow people to bypass the fees you are charged when buying off of the broker. Housing in EQ2 also is made easier with its positioning system. There are people that create extraordinary homes simply by putting together items you craft or by things that are ready-made.

EQ II housing for some people is an entire hobby.

Well considering how ESO phasing works I don't think it will be broken and ugly like in BDO 100 people coming out of same house.

They could just make that system won't put together 2 people who has house in same place
    Immersion breaking is fixed

Now they could improve World by adding lot of Special loot and treasures collectible that you can stuff in your home ....

    Weapon Stands and Armor Stands

There where rumor that spell crafting will be related with exploration and artifacts collecting possible we could have special place for spell craft and stands were we can stuff those glowing shiny artifacts

    "actual gameplay"

lol precious. Yeah no one could possibly derive enjoyment from a house in the game world.

I don't much like TESO but housing is such an important content idea that all mmorpg's SHOULD have.
Problem is this will simply be an idea to boost sales of their future expansion/DLC.

Housing SHOULD be in every game on release,it should not be used as a selling gimmick to make more money than a game deserves to make up front.None the less it is still a needed piece of content moving forward and will likely spur more profits.

I think its interesting that there is a lot of dead space in Game maps (BDO I'm looking at you), but curse your beard if you suggest it be use-able by players for anything except killing mobs.

I always prefer my MMO housing to have utility. I mean, decorating is OK but not really something that will engage me long term.

One thing I've thought they could do is include special crafting stations that let you craft any sets you have already unlocked by visiting the places where those sets are crafted. I'm forever forgetting and googling just where it is I need to travel to in order to craft a specific set - especially if it's a set that I don't craft often. Being able to craft them all in my home would be something I'd welcome.

Then there is the possibility of using your house instance as a shop. Not being able to sell your stuff in game efficiently is annoying. You need to be part of an elite trading guild that manages to bid successfully on a convenient high traffic location every week... and then you're limited to selling just 30 items or stacks at a time. Those guilds are also always at the 500 player guild limit so getting into a good one isn't all that easy. Making a house a place to buy the items from everyone who owns an instance of it would help with this tremendously.

And the third one for me would be a way to address the inadequate inventory and bank space limits. The crafting material bottomless bag that you get when you sub was a great relief for that when it was introduced. It was fun having lots of room in the bank while that lasted, But now once again, I'm having to manage my bank and mules way too much with the tenfold increase in unique dropped sets that are worth holding on to for different builds and purposes. Adding armor, weapon and jewelry storage to houses would be a great help in that regard.

Hope to hear more details about what they have in mind soon. So far we have been shown a lot of exteriors. some very nice ones, but few details.

Crafting stations: Turbine added these to the LotR cash shop so must be a possibility going forward.

Shop fronts: would be disruptive to the current guild structure of course. And would Zenimax want to introduce many thousands of shops especially if there is a performance hit.

Inventory: bank space limits for sure - a mix of in-game and cash shop? And it could be extended to bags of course.

As far as "decoration goes" the obvious would be shelves or stands to put "collection" items on. Wrothgar museum style perhaps.

I thought this would be the case as well - with rewards for mini-quest chains being the option to buy a house in that area. The "Housing" patch will be free it seems though. Maybe there will be more sophisticated - build your own - housing that comes in a DLC?

Whatever they have, I'm sure there will be a mix of in-game gold and crown store. I'm banking on it... I have about 10K crowns saved up for that :)

A few brokers near the front of each housing instance shouldn't hurt performance at all. If 500 people selling, as is the case with the guild trader NPCs, is their database performance limit, they could just spawn extra broker NPCs as needed. And I don't think it would hurt guilds at all. The guild trader NPCs in starter cities and near undaunted enclaves would still be the in the best spots.

The blatant misuse of the comma in the first paragraph made me stop reading the article. If the writer can't take the time to learn the basic rules of English grammar, how am I supposed to take anything he has to say seriously? And yes, I, too, look forward to housing in ESO.
  • GarbracGarbrac Member UncommonPosts: 32
I loved the DAoC housing and the consignment merchants you could place on your porch to sell your items. I would love a variation of that in eso but I can't see how it's possible with the way the guild system and stores are designed.

There are some fantastic ideas here in the comments. I hope ZOS gives themail a read.
  • Soki123Soki123 Member RarePosts: 2,558

I hope to god they have a daoc system with the merchants on your porch. Some of us don t want a guild to trade, so this would be great.
