Overwatch Kills Diablo! is that even likely?
Overwatch is a threat to games like LoL etc. if it makes it big on the esports scene then it will likely do so at LoL's expense, games such as Starcraft or Diablo, Hearthstone etc. not so much. :o

I've watched all Overwatch tournaments so far, they're all backed by Blizzard in one form or another and the whole thing is really professionally made. LAN tournaments are great and there's some tournament every month since the game launched.

Not to mention that they are launching Overwatch League in few months, which is basically a professional oriented Overwatch, with contracts for the gamers, benefits and fixed salaries, so you can even make a career out of it. It's basically NBA for gamers.

Here's the link if anyone is interested: https://overwatchleague.com/en-us/

Yeah me too, and I was not a Blizzard fan.  But they recognized they can't just keep doing the same stuff with WoW forever and proactively branched out into new genres.

Also, apparently they cut the cord on Titan at some point, recognizing it wasn't working, and turned it into Overwatch.  Those aren't easy decisions to make for a dev after investing a lot into something (*cough HiRez Paladins *cough), but it was clearly the right one.

Anyway, still very much in love with Overwatch and closing in on 400 hours played in-game.  The game is just unbelievably well made, they really deserved this award.

Indeed. Not only did WoW not win any awards it wasn't even nominated in the multi-player category! (Which Overwatch won). AB may be a little concerned though that OW was their only game that won any awards though.

Pleased for Ninantic. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if Pokemon Go hadn't won any awards. And whilst it may not have won (or been nominated) for GotY for me (and I don't play it!) Pokemon Go has been 2016's true game of the year with worldwide mass appeal.

Well Game Awards has been a joke forever.. but yeah, nobody else is going to throw money into this award show, as it's an exclusive club of large publishers who fund it

    For those wondering:

"The game awards is guided by an advisory board that includes the executive leadership teams from Activision (Eric Hirshberg, CEO), AMD (Dr. Lisa Su, CEO), Electronic Arts (Peter Moore, CCO), Microsoft (Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox), Nintendo of America (Reggie Fils-Aime, President), Rockstar Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment (Shawn Layden, Chairman, SIE Worldwide Studios), Telltale Games (Steve Allison, SVP Publishing), Ubisoft (Yves Guillemot, CEO), Valve and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (David Haddad, President). "

Yet, if the board was made by :

    Johnny Man - From Philippines
Jacky The Great - From United States of the America
Wonder Woman - From United Europe
Sam Rockwell - From (The) Moon

...you will then be like " Well, Game Awards has been a joke since forever. I mean look at the amateur board which is giving those rewards. Lolololol"

Reporter: What's behind Blizzard success, and how do you make your gamers happy?
Blizzard Boss: Making gamers happy is not my concern, making money.. yes!

Overwatch a threat to LoL, what are you smoking haha? Overwatch is as much threat to LoL as is Hots. We're talking about ~5mil active players (monthly and declining) against 100mil+ (still growing)..hardly a competition for LoL..

Even CS, Dota etc..are so far ahead of Blizzard's "wannabe" esports games that they will likely never reach them..

Also some of you shouldn't desire for Blizzard to get rid of it's children playerbase, or they'll go out of business within a month.

This is not the Blizzard that was 20 years ago. Overwatch winning anything is a big slap to all the gamers in the world. It's not like there weren't any good games to choose this year. Hell even Doom is leagues better. I could probably count 9 more, with TW3 expansion too.

Well deserved. OW is still gaining players at a high rate, their direct competitors are either gone or fading.
  • rodarinrodarin Member EpicPosts: 2,611
They just did what every other game was doing they started making lobby games and they (Blizzard AND the lobby game set up) appeal to the lowest common denominator of gamer so of course they will score big and have more players than everyone else.

As with WoW population doesnt equate to good game or experience. but the WoW/Blizzard fanboys will all say they did it better than everyone just like they did it with WoW and thats why people flock to their version of the same thing you can get somewhere else.

So all this really does it make sure that MMOs completely go by the way side and now everyone is scratching every  MMO plan they were even thinking about attempting and are now working on lobby games with multiple arenas to fight in and once again try to out do Blizzard at something.

It helps to see what games Blizzard went against - no wonder they killed it:

(the below is a reflection of what a joke "Game Awards" are - it's not Blizzard's fault - so this is not a slam on Blizzard but Game Awards being lame)

Not slamming Blizzard but the process in which they win awards.. still reads the same to me.

You have to understand the power big corporations have and influence they have due to their money in their respective industries.

The CORPORATIONS run the world - it's been like that for a LONG time.

Again I think Blizzard has done a lot of things right - I don't think they are as good NOW (talking creativity and game innovation) as they were 20 years ago  (when they still had the raw talent and didn't have corporate chains to drag them down) - but that's a different story.

    Diablo 1 and 2
    Starcraft 1

    These were masterpieces IMO.

I dunno man. Hearthstone and Overwatch are colossal hits and genre-leading games. Plus they're just chock full of polish and even if you don't like them, you have to admit they are stellar at what they are trying to do. That's not good enough though and you'd prefer if they were making isometric dungeon crawlers?

Yeah someone is definitely out of touch in this thread, for sure.

Plus half the time you complain how Blizz has too much money and it's not fair to indie devs because Blizz can hire all the best talent.  But here you say they have no talent anymore...

LoL is like 100y ahead in term of strategical deepness, lore, champs and replayability. There is no bigger drug then LoL nowdays, hence growing to a over 100mil active playerbase. There are LoL universitys, LoL cosplayers and a millions of sites that give strategic feedback for champs/runes/ positioning etc.

Overwatch on the other hand is simple and dumb in terms of deepness and you can get fed up pretty fast playing alot. LoL doesnt have this problem. Also watching overwatch on esport is like taking a LSD pill- you dont know the fuck is going on with that messy gameplay. Its just not fun to watch.

We get it, fictional characters and the deceased make such great examples.

    /end sarcasm

How is that even a valid point? I can think of plenty of places that would be better for judging games than the companies that make them. Do you enjoy a circle jerk? Because that's all these publishers are doing is getting each other off.

I think you're missing the point or are just willfully ignoring it. Your unfortunate attempt at sarcasm seems to have left you in a bit of an ironic situation and makes you look silly because English is CLEARLY not @IceAge native language and yet he clearly has a better grasp of sarcasm than you do.

The point he was trying to make is that regardless of who were to put on the awards, it really doesn't matter because someone somewhere would have some sort of commentary on how the results were skewed or slanted.

You could essentially take your argument and apply it to the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys. These are all awards voted on by industry-specific professionals made up of people who are members of the industry. The idea is that these people would be impartial in some way. So what would you like? Fans voting? First of all, they have those. Second of all, surf your way over to metacritic and tell me about how fans are so neutral. Personally, I completely love the riveting writing styles when I see stuff like "0/10 - Evening it out because it's not that good." OMG!! My only complaint is that it wasn't longer!! /sacrasm

LoL is the Mcdonalds of gaming. You generally feel like you consumed a bunch of garbage when you're done.
I don't know man, I prefer Hots, but I wouldn't say that LoL is garbage..LoL is way more competitive, skill-based etc.

I prefer Hots because it's way more casual and relaxed than LoL. Don't really wanna go too much competitive into it. Which is how I feel about other Blizzard games as well. I think Blizzard games are alright, but not the games I'd consider great or masterpieces.

Early Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft games were all masterpieces for their time. However the latest games they've developed like OW or HS give an impression like they were made by an indie developer. If they didn't carry the Blizzard name, nobody would even bother to try them.

Is all the talent gone? Is Activision dictating them what to do?

HoTS doesnt even exist outside the typical blizz fanboy market. Its still LoL and Dota2. Blizz just make games without any depth. Look at diablo 3- what a piece of shit. Old blizz doesnt exist anymore.

Or, y'know, maybe we tap developer talent from multiple genres, AAA-backed and independent studios, and we have them vote/discuss which game, based upon its merits as they see them, deserve recognition.

That board DMKano listed is like asking 10 NFL Franchise owners to determine the division standings for the entire NFL and sticking your head in the sand when, surprise surprise, their teams always seems at or near the top.

In what way is LoL more competitive or skilled-based?
The itemization alone is deeper than HOTS's Talent system.  I enjoy HOTS for the straightforward approach, but it gives up depth to reach that.

As far as competitive: I believe that flipping a coin to see who can land on heads more can be more competitive than a game of 11 on 11 football, it just depends upon the attitude taken.  In that sense, the competitive scene for LoL is larger, which would make it more competitive, so to speak..  But it doesnt really speak to the features of the game, in my opinion.
