What do you play, when you want to play everything and nothing?

Greetings folks,

Last day I've had this drama going on.

I fired up FFXIV. Thought wow, so much to do. Story, duty roulette, cook some food, etc. Then thought... yeah but GW2 has story I didn't finish. And I kinda don't like FFXIV now, gotta do GW2.

I fired up GW2. Did one story chapter, thought wow. So much to do! Story, crafting, exploring, PvP, achievements. And Wintersday is coming. Then thought, but man... there is ESO, that's got better exploration and quests.

I fired up ESO. Ran around for 10 minutes, thought wow. No. Feels empty.

I fired up Witcher 3. Did a few missions, thought wow, so much content left for me. Such a good game, so much to explore. But meh...

I fired up Doom. My laptop is not that good (GTX 860m), so wasn't much fun running around with 20-28fps. But I bet if it was, it'd end up like the other games.

I fired up... Oh, Skyrim. Never played it. Thought wow, so much to explore. But meh, 10 minutes and ESC > Exit Game.

Now I installed Mass Effect 3. Loved that trilogy, completed it 4 times during the past years. But I know if I start playing, it might end up like the other games.

I'm thinking about buying WoW, but I know it'd end up like the other games.

I also tried Wildstar. Same.

Tried SWTOR. Same.

I even got around to playing Diablo 2, which I loved when I was 18-19. Same.

What's going on? Feels like there's so much to do in each game, and looks like it's so much fun, but I just can't play anything. So I kinda want to play everything, but nothing.

It's a very, and I mean very vicious circle that's been going on for the past few years. Is this like an addiction where you chase the first "high"?

I used to religiously play RIFT before it went F2P, I was settled, I enjoyed it, but Trion messed it up. So I now I'm kind of wasting my time trying this and that and that and this.

Has anyone ever dealt with a situation like this?

Cheers,

I do this all the time.  Right now I am playing Total War: Warhammer and it is great although I keep restarting.

Generally I bounce around a bit and settle on something like Stonehearth, 7 Days to Die or something that I never intended to play in the first place.  I often log into and out of LOTRO and WoW (when I am subbed).  I have installed AoC a few times and occasionally think if Eve.

Most frequently I would say Europa Universalis or Rimworld

For MMOs there just aren't a lot lately that keep me interested.

You're doing it wrong if you still remember how the user interface works and don't have to start a new avatar to relearn the UI.

The cure for that is: Drink water, exercise and don't play ANYTHING for 3 weeks. After that you will have a fresh view and appreciate details more which will make you less likely to zap-gaming.

What you need is SWG but the sad part is that it no longer exists unless you play the EMU. I haven't been on it for over a year as it never had JTL and as far as I know it still hasn't but never the less SWG is the deepest, most advanced MMO of it's day and nothing has ever managed to pull off what SWG did all those years ago.

Not really. Been playing EVE exclusively for almost 2.5 yrs now. I did pick up Wasteland 2 the other day, but struggling to tear myself away from EVE.

For me it's pretty much one game at a time, always has been.

I got it Monday.  Yesterday I learned by accident the Z key highlights anything you can interact with.  That includes locating bat shit in the caves.

I had that feeling four years ago, I had stopped playing my longterm mmorpg, I had played four different mmorpg's for a few months each and felt like giving up on mmorpg.

The short-term solution for me was to start playing singleplayer games and at that time I also started to read books again. The longterm solution was to find another hobby. A bit over two years ago I started on a bridge course and since then I have been hooked.

I've been game hopping ever since SWG NGE went RIP. Yea, thats right, I even prefer SWG NGE than the crop of MMOs that were out at the time because I can't let go of the fascination of how SWG was the greatest MMO of all time and nothing will ever come close to it. So yea, for me its like chasing the first high which I'll never get not just because there won't be another "first" for me but because only 1 percent of the MMO genre is actually making an attempt to copy SWG.
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

This I had a burn out recently so I decided to do something unusual I haven't done before. I been taking night classes during weekday and gym when I can. This really brought back a lot of inspiration to play games again after 3 months of doing this.

That happens to me all the time. Then I realize it isn't the game itself but the fact that I want but to play it with friends instead of solo.

When this happens to me I just read and write. Maybe look into my old pnp game books. Maybe work out and and listen to music. Re-string the old guitar and play a bit. Just need to step away from the computer for a while till you really know what you want to play. That's what I've found anyway.

ESO of course!  And now I just jump back and forth between PvP and PvE... but the REAL Merry Christmas I am having is jumping back and forth between ESO North America and ESO Europe.  LOL.. those silly Russians... there must be a LOT of vodka over there!

Sounds like you're trying to force yourself to play when you don't actually wanna play. Try some different hobbies?

The cure for me was to take up more than one hobby.  When I look at my library of games, and I can't decide which one to play, even though I have a dozen games I haven't even started yet, it really means that I'm tired of gaming in general.

This is when I pick up my hobby tools and paint brushes and spend a week or two painting Warhammer 40k models.  Sometimes I play X-wing miniatures at the local hobby shop or with the kids.  Sometimes, I pull my car in the garage and detail it all weekend.  Other times I pick up a series of books and read 2-3 of them in a row... The Horus Heresy is a great series to read.

Alternatively, try an entirely different type of gaming experience.  You'd be surprised how much fun you can have with a copy of Assetto Corsa and a Logitech G920.  In fact, it's freaking addictive.

But most of all, spread your life around several different activities.  There's very few people on earth that can hyper concentrate on one sole hobby their whole lives.

If you only gave skyrim 10 minutes then you didn't try skyrim.

Wait, what? What a great pro tip.

Now where the fek can I get a few cases of 5.56 ammo? :)

I believe you are facing what many of us gamers are facing, the craving for something so different, that we try everything, but nothing is different or new enough to keep us wanting more.   After over 10 years of playing the same type of MMOs, it's time for a change.  Maybe a VR MMO is the next step, where you can feel and smell the VR world.  We are years away from it, but that's when it will all change.  For now, it's the same ol same ol I'm afraid.  Taking a break, as some suggest will work for a little while, but then you'll be right back where you started, frustrated from the lack or originality.   It's like the movies, remake after remake.  Originality has flown out the window.  Hopefully, it will come back someday.

Cheers for answers. Some are rather depressing. But yeah. By the way, I'm working out religiously and learning about supplements and human body. That's my other hobby, besides games. Been doing that for a while now, seems like it's stuck on me.

ive gone back to my more innocent gaming roots recently with some jrpgs.  ive been playing through dragon quest 7 which has some good old school stories.  ive also started playing final fantasy 15 and enjoyed it even though it is a bit too modern millennial culture for my taste.  i think this game shows a bit how gaming has outgrown me.  this game shows a group of males acting responsibly and intelligently for the most part.  it wouldn't have been accepted by my generation that was trying to break away from societal rules, stigmas, and restrictions.  still its a fun game to play.

one other option is to try modded games.  skyrim has been out for a while and has lots of mods.  people make mods for pc that would never be allowed as part of the actual game.  if you are looking for something you wouldn't normally see that would be a good place.

most games become repetitious after a while.  take out sexual exploitation/meaningful conflict and you are left with is a bad story and lots of repetitive gameplay.  modern horror movies are a good example of this.  they are bad stories with no reason to watch.  even single player games are so long now they can become very repetitive and often don't have the redeeming qualities of shock factor to keep you interested in some form.

Find a game that pits you into action instantly. Trust me.
Just try 'firing up' a moba or fps.
