As a member of the target group, age 30+ (apparently?), I am so very disappointed with DDO. Everything that I enjoyed in the pnp D&D is non-existent, and I have no idea why this game even has an online component. Im in Australia, and for 89.95 Aussie$ and $14.95US per month, it is terrible value, for a low content, 100% instanced game, with no real RPG component. Let me break this down into my key gripes:
1) 100% instanced: The only reason pnp gameplay is instanced is because of the inherent game-play nature of having six friends sitting a table and playing it. There is no capacity to interact with other players, so the world gets populated with NPC's and seriously cool DM. That's where the fun was. What were they thinking by instancing this game online!!! It defeats the whole purpose of having an online world, for chrissake. That's what an MMORPG is about, using the technology to meet other players that you could't do on the table!!
2) Content: There is nothing else in this online version, that hasn't been done in NWN, Balder' Gate (even the XBOX version is more fun). I have had more fun with the old Wizardry game on the Apple11+. Pool of Radiance and The Eye of the Beholder, now nearly 20 years old had more game play and content than this game.
3) World Freedom: Well there just isn't any. Every time I play it, I feel railroaded into the next banal quest. I can't even sell my starter gear! I can't sail in the harbour or leave the town, find a hut and set up a home base. Again, why is this game online? Why? WHY?!! This is what I wanted, true D&D online, not this neutered, half-baked attempt that is not even as good as a console game.
4) Price: I can pay $69.95 for Oblivion, what am I doing paying monthly extortion for this rubbish.
5) bugs, bugs; talk about clunky, full of glitches, bad.
Why do people have to f*** up D&D constantly!! The movies are crap, the online game is crap. Wizards of the Coast...have you gone insane, because you will ruin the franchinse for anything but pnp books. I am shattered.

I have to agree with you. This is a bastardized version of DnD that really destroys the franchise. Its a real shame to, because DnD is the mother of all role playing games. Its the first, best and only.
DDO is a sham. No emotes, no roleplaying, and fully instanced. The game is essentially a chat room lobby, with a few private rooms for the groups to go into to grind a memorized quest.
Turbine, and WOTC especially should be ashamed.
Yep. Its going back today, and I learnt that turbine is garbage, cost me $14.99US to learn that. It could be worse. Except that everytime a D&D comes out in a new format or media type, its ruined by the technocrats and bean counters. That's all I can put it down to, because anyone who has played D&D, and when I say played, actually really played it for years, built own adventures etc, would never allow this to happen. Tragic.
20-25's? Well they probably missed that mark if they are getting people like me at 37! I first found d&d in 1980, then played all the rpg's on pc and Apple as they came out, so I am happy to say that I have nearly 26 years experience about what an rpg actually is.
So, are they getting the 20-25's, then?
Apart the major problem with the gameplay, my biggest problem with the game is that it doesn't feel like D&D at all.
Everything that made D&D pnp fun, has been stripprd off.
There is not atmosphere no sense of discover, no adrenaline rush while you fight in a Dungeons.
For me it's not even to be considered an RPG.
If this game would have been released just with the Multiplayer option it would have been better.
Passing this game for an MMORPG is very arrogant by Turbine.
I hope LOTRO would be much better than this one, for the sake of Tolkien.
Agree with the OP.
I played PnP for years in the 80's and I don't there anyone could say this is even close. Aside from the fact a little dice rolls off to the side and the "GM" rambles in the background. They would have been better off investing in some voice overs for the NPC's.............and thousands of other things. What a disapointment. This is a complete and total step back for MMORPG's on every level.
Go for NeverWinter Nights guys, forget this one.
Again...agree with OP. What you've said was what I've been thinking since I played DDO in Beta and launch. Not impressed at all.
No longer visiting MMORPG.com.
wow this is a truely horrible game...what a waste of 50 bucks...talk about laggggg...i never want to see the inside of a tavern ever again ...i basically ran like 7 quests and it was the most boring sequences of any mmorg i have ever played...i went and cancelled my subscription the next day and havent touched it again since...
on the bright note the character creation was alot of fun...i think i spent more time creating different characters than actually playing the game :D
Of cource I agree with the OP and I hope this is not the trend with new Online games.
This all Kind of started with CoH in my eyes, Then Guild Wars and Now DDO and some others.
And others yet are not real all that big of worlds, I hate this trend.
WoW is looking good right now.
And isn't Bioware making something called Dragon Realms?
I most definitely agree with fiendish. This was a HUGE dissappointment for me. I am also in the so-called target group and I was severly let down. I did play the game for the full month to give it a real chance .. but still not impressed what's so ever. There are 2 reasons I didn't like it:
No Content
Game Speed was way too slow
There are about 5 other reason I could list here, but why .. it's just a game that I am plain upset I spent money on. Mostly because I am a die hard CoH/CoV player. I sold my account to buy DDO and spent a month wasting my time. I now own DDO, but will not spend the money for anymore time. I have bought another CoV account and am back to playing that. (On that note .. anyone want to buy my copy? lol)
This is definitely my opinion (obviously shared by others) and I am in no way trying to offend anyone that actually enjoys this game, but wow .. what a let down.
If we exclude the anti-instancing and the anti-CoH stuff, I mostly agree with what is been said here.
Instancing is a blessing however and CoH is by far the less bad MMO. World size is irrelevant if the gameplay is ruined. Otherwise everyone would be playing in EQ, the world size outmatch easily all other MMOs except maybe the 2D MMOs.

Also, this game ain't no COH/COV. Those games, even tho they have their own flaws, have way more content and are way more fun to play then DDO at the moment (and I can solo, trio, full team, whatever I want). But COH is nearly 2 years old and DDO has been out (in release, not beta) for only about 2 months. Maybe DDO just needs some time.

Played: Age of Conan, DDO, Saga of Ryzom, SWG, DaOC, MxO, EQ2, and so on...
Wish List: Jumpgate Evolution, Star Wars: TOR, Star Trek
I got a beta key for DDO. I feel very lucky because that means I didn't slap down 50$ for the box and 15$ a month to actually play the game.
I will say this, I'm an old D&D guy. I've played the game since the mid-70s. I still have the white box full of paperback books. I have old dungeons I laid out over 30 years ago. How anyone could fail to produce a good game given all the content that was generated in the last 30 years is beyond me.
I consider this the second MMORPG based on a popular genre that has totally failed. SWG had the Star War's universe to play with and has basically failed to offer a good game. Contrast the failure of DDO and SWG with the success of WoW. They had an already complete universe to make the game with and they succeeded. What was the major difference?
Fun.
That is my entire answer. I found WoW to be great fun from level 1-60. I could play when I wanted. I could do what I wanted. I could get together with MY friends and have a great time.
At one time in my life, I had great respect for Turbine. They built the best MMORPG that I ever played. AC. Since then, they have failed me with AC2 and now DDO. The great respect I had for Turbine has diminished. All I can say about DDO is that I have never been more disappointed in the sure thing.

Don't forget MxO. That game had some great design concepts that were destroyed by terrible execution.

I actually had forgotten Matrix Online. There you had another well fleshed content where they totally failed to make a game. Some of the content buried in the Matrix would have been totally cool if implemented.
Looking back at the original movie, you have Trinity learning to fly a helicopter on the fly. Think about finding a disc with that information, you flash through a sequence of screens, and then you can hop in a helicopter and fly. That would have been so cool. I heard such bad things about the implementation that I didn't even try Matrix Online out.
I actually followed DDO fairly carefully before I tried the game out in Beta. You would try to post on DDO's forums and they would totally ignore you. When I got into Beta, Sir Bruce (http://mmogchart.com/) played the Beta and tried to explain where he thought DDO was going wrong. Now, whatever you want to say about his numbers, Sir Bruce has been studying MMORPGs for a while now. I think you have to at least give his post some consideration. However, I think they pretty much went ahead and ignored the entire post.
People tried to explain where they thought the implementation of DDO was going wrong. The feeling I got was the designers just said, "Whatever." After blowing off everyone, they made a game that most people simply won't play.
Now, some people might try out DDO and find the game interesting. Obviously my tastes will differ from other peoples taste. I'm just going to repeat that DDO was a big disappointment to me. Frankly, I don't see how Turbine will convince me to buy another product from them. I think they lost their way as a MMORPG design house.
