Huxley pessimism :P

Huxley seems to become a great game, but what about the negative aspects?

I've heard too much about others complaining about it being an MMOFPS, but there must be some other reason it hasn't gotten so much attention.

Anyone wanna chip in on why they don't like Huxley or what should be done different?
(Besides being an mmofps)

so yer trolling for some huxley hate?

people who dont like FPS games wont like it

people who like FPS games will  love it. If you ever played planetside and even some-what liked it.. guess what.. this is yer hook.

why the hell do I wanna bash on a game anyway? christ man, its bad enough there arent enough decent multiplayer games out there to satisfy me.. and huxley looks like the balls of every FPS stick.  I cant wait for it to come out personally

The most lame name ever to be inflicted on an MMOG? ;-)

I mean c'mon...."Huxley"?!? Sounds like a name for a big cute dog or something. Just because Aldous Huxley was a great writer, doesn't mean his surname makes any kind of statement.

Personally I'm not sure. I'm looking forward to it, but maybe people just think it might be a Planetside 2. (not in the sense of gameplay or anything).

    No longer visiting MMORPG.com.

kinda agree.  I don't much care for FPS, but i loved Planetside in the old days.  I'm realyl looking forward to Huxley.

FYI guys, Planetside is the first MMOFPS, dont' let them lead ya on.  If you're wondering what they're like, get a free-trial to Planetside and check it out.  Some things are cool, some aren't.  Hopefully Huxley is full of good.

Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.

Ok, since you asked for it...

It's not MMO combat, just MMO social interaction (trading, group forming, etc) and to me that sounds a little bit like a chat room tacked on to Unreal 2004.5
Not to say it'll be bad, it looks fantasticaroo. But it sort of falls under the catagory of Guild Wars, of which I'm not really a fan.

The other thing is there's what sounds like character stat advancement, and that leads to inbalance.
I don't get why so many dev teams are starting to think that player levels are a standard requirement of MMO games. That said, the end game content should be a lot more diverse than most other stuff out there.

It looks sweet, but don't have a good opinion of the publisher Webzen.  They are the number 1 or 2 publisher for a Korean Company, but thier games coming US side have been well... Not so good.  Hopefully that will change with the opening of thier US branch.  Also there is the issue of Hit Registry and how they distribute the servers.

nobody's perfect.. and if you don't try...

    well...

Anyway i don't quite get why the stat-building thing is bad tho... care to explain that one?

and the name...yeah... kinda agree on that but still, it's just a name...

It could be named "Boink" for all i care, as long as it's a good game..

Now that I think about it; Huxley would rock with a skill based system since much of what stats would do in Huxley would be covered by your twitched base skills; so stats really shouldn't have a baring on an mmofps since there are only a limited amount of qualities you can apply stats to.

There could be alot to put "points" in...

    AC
    auto-evade %
    sniper aim stabillity
    regular weapon stability
    reload time
    runspeed
hp amount healed when using medikit
    recover-time when affected by flashbang
    noise reduction (stealth)
    bomb disarming
    poison resistance
    jump height
    etc..

I've been waiting for a good MMOFPS to come along, so I'm really looking forward to Huxley (and Tabula Rasa) but that being said . . .

I dont really have a good opinion of Webzen.  Yeah they're pretty big in Asia (where I am) but thats cause they let all sorts of bots and hackers run amuck and dont seem to care about catching them or their game security or anything like Mu Online, a cheap-looking Diablo 2 clone that nevertheless is kinda big in Asia, I think it was the number 2 game in my country for a bit.  A rather mediocre game all around but that fact that you could bot your way thru the game actually attracted alot of people

I don''t really know when Humankind will die out but i''m guessing about 6 years before WOW.

Yeah there's the inbalance right there, giving handicap to a more experienced player.
Certifications would be a better way to handle progression. Certs for say a wider array of advanced weapons or vehicles.
The amount of stat change in progression shows exactly how much faith the devs have in their game. The more that's added, the more they want to distract you from the actual core gameplay.

You don't give an experienced chess player more pieces, or an experienced poker player a better hand.

How about the fact that this is another korean pile of crap? This won't be different from any of the other ones out there (remember how hyped RFO was? well look at it now) it will probably work the same way as the previous games, but with a sci-fi setting + fps.

Until maybe 2 weeks ago, I had never even heard of it. If its goal is to mimick Planetside, then mission accomplished....meaning extremely low player base.

They might want to consider some advertising.

ps. with the exception of maybe 2 games, I hate FPS and avoid them. So unless Huxley has a crafting system similiar to SWG pre-cu (real crafting as a prof and not a secondary skill that everyone has), I wont touch it

You've been very busy to have missed this one. I first heard of this game last summer and the only resemblances it has to Planetside is that it's an FPS style game and that you are fighting for control, so there's a point to the all the senseless violence. The graphics I saw on the demo from last years E3 were very advanced and was really awe inspiring for the short demo that it was. Here's some more info about it from the main site. Oh and the reason you haven't seen any advertising is because it's not due for release until this Fall, and that's in Korea. No word on the NA and EU release dates. Oh and it's coming to the Xbox 360 too.

Huxley is a massively multiplayer online first-person shooting game (MMOFPS) developed by the H-Studio of global online entertainment company, WEBZEN Inc. Huxley takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where human beings have mutated and are divided into two opposing races, Sapiens and Alternative. At the center of the battle for survival is Lunarites, a promising new energy source that both sides seek to obtain. Forced to battle against one another for the continuance of each race, Sapiens and Alternatives are willing to do whatever it takes to wipe out the conflicting race and gain control of the world and its resources.

In near future, Nuclearites bombard the World. Destructive earthquakes, massive tidal waves and dramatic climate changes wreak havoc around the globe, isolating continents and driving the human race into chaos. Those who survive the destruction dream of tranquility, but an eruption among the human race and the appearance of horrible mutants drives the world into further disorder. Racism and oppression cause rebellious uprisings and war that divide the landscape between two powers: Sapiens and Alternative, At the heart of the war emerges a powerful energy source the Lunarites created by Huxley, a scientist and possible savior.

Both factions seek glory and victory, fighting mercilessly for the Lunerites and their very existence.

    I. FPS IN A PERSISTENT WORLD.
Huxley delivers the excitement and rich gameplay experience of an MMORPG while combining the knuckle-whitening action of an FPS. Players can communicate with each other in a virtual online city, and participate in side battles with the intuitive PvP (player vs. player) system. Everything a character does in the Huxley world directly affects the success of not only the individual, but also of their race and party; from battles to behaviors, all interactions are linked to the survival of a character’s entire race.

    II. LARGE-SCALE BATTLES.
Huxley goes past traditional death match FPS gameplay by challenging players to adapt to new forms of combat to protect the interests of the camp. Servers will be solely dedicated to accommodate millions of users engaged in fast paced, large-scale combat. Players will require strategy and cooperation to achieve victory. Extensive multiplayer battle modes are available each with a variety of unique fighting techniques and special characteristics.

    III. ADVANCED A.I. AND QUESTS.
Huxley has advanced A.I. that rivals other online games. Enemies in Huxley demonstrate remarkable intelligence, which can be used to a player’s advantage or demise. Quests in Huxley will take players on paths of intrigue to uncover conspiracies resulting in confrontations. Each quest is continually updated so players feel as though they are enjoying a new story mode every time they play.

IV. CHARACTER GROWTH AND UNIQUE PLAY STYLES.
The characters in Huxley are continuously growing, which is rare in FPS games. Players are able to enhance their own combat styles by obtaining out-of-this-world weapons and new skills, which in turn continuously challenges players to adopt different gameplay styles as they progress.
Here's a couple of screenies, I think it looks wicked.

In general I'm not a big FPS fan and in general when I do MMOS I want an RPG. I don't care if they have levels, or a more "skill based" approach; but the big thing I don't want is them to be primarly twitch based. By the same token a degree of imbalance is good, I mean half the point is to quest for treasure and such (whether it's magical or technological).

*THAT* said from what little I've seen of the game it doesn't strike me as being anything terribly unique. I mean it seems to me that MMO elements have been in FPS games forever. I don't know who had them first, but looking back at games like "Tribes" and the various "Real war" games where people take on roles of differant kinds of soldiers in a squad (Medic, Engineer, Grunt, etc...) I'm not really sure where Huxley is going to be really differant when you get down to it.

The way it sounds to me is like a massive arena where guys in the differant factions (whatever you call them) pick a name and a role, and then run around and frag each other. There might be some enviromental factors that drop extra ammo, and grenades and such which you can trade back and forth, but ultimatly it comes down to your typical mass scale FPS frag fest.

As several people have said, it's good for FPS fans, but anyone who isn't into FPS stuff to begin with isn't going to be impressed.

The social dynamic kind of awes me, because communication has been part of games like Tribes and such for a while. "Grouping" is a given in these games and as far as social actvitity goes it's all about coordination (mostly using teamspeak) or just saying "hahaha I fragged you good" or whatever.

To be frank we are still a ways away before we actually see a game where any kind of meaningful interaction or RP is going to be nessicary in an MMO enviroment (other than the cold blooded division of loot and dicussion of tactics).

Oh and for the record, when I first heard the name "Huxley" I actually thought of Bill Cosby's character in The Cosby Show first. I guess I'm pretty far out there. >:)
