This game has nothing to do with the old Dark and Light besides the name. Everything is different including the genre and the company behind it. So yes you have pay again.
You might have paid for an old game but this game may take it's name but is not connected to the old game now. Even if you might track the purchase of the IP it has significantly changed so I doubt they will accept that payment .
Maybe give it a wave if you were a scammed settler yourself o/
I wasn't a scammed settler because the game looked like a pile of crap at the time, so I didn't fell for it. I also tried to warn others.....but some people just don't listen.
Of course you have to pay again because this is a new company. They bought the IP and made another game, why should be held responsible for other companies failures?
Instead of asking what "you" get for free or what you are entitled to, you should be asking why these guys would use a name that is associated with so much disappointment and resentment. Why have there been no actual gameplay videos released yet when this game is so close to being available on steam?
"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game." - SEANMCAD
This is a completely different game, with the same name. So yes, you have to pay. I get that it was created from the failed title that launched ages ago, but don't expect free things when it's basically a complete reboot of the IP and a completely remade game on a new engine. That's just asinine.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

It's going to be released as early access too and we all already know how many scams are involved with that. The fact there are no gameplay videos sort of just reinforces the idea that it will be a scam.
I just heard of this game and watched a youtube video. I started out actually really interested in the game and what they wanted to implement but very quickly started thinking to myself ''those are a lot of things... too many things'', then I realized they were using Unreal Engine, then I found out there were almost zero videos on the gameplay, then I remembered he said it was coming to early access, then I found out the company has been known to make games Pay-to-Win, then I found out it was a 12 year old game, only to lastly find out it's actually 15 years old or more!
I really don't believe these people will deliver on anything at all. I mean, I know they won't.
I bought a candy 15 years ago. Now they will release a brand new candy. Would I have to pay for the candy again to..taste it ? I hated the candy back then! Maybe I am entitled to get one for free now?!

Finally found something after 10 minutes of digging online. It's amazing how the newer title has buried the older game in the search engine results.
According to Wikipedia:
MMORPG.com gave the game a 4 out of 10, saying that it "offers a degree of freedom that is rare in online games" but "the game in its current state is broken, full of bugs and does not have half of what was promised"
I was Settler 2637 , played for the 2 years the game was up , was alotta
fun thru the technical and internal legal battles the Devs fought thru
to the end , Hoping Snail has captured the Spirit of D&L has they
have said over and over , and dont muck it up with an invasive
CAshShop..
And the original name was DArk and Light , , when
Snail got it they renamed in 06 to Savage Horizon ,
then back
to D&L, last year ..
Wait, there was another game named dark and light 15 years ago? From what I'm gathering in this post, it failed to launch after people bought it?
Originally it was called Savage Horizon, then renamed to Dark and Light. It promised amazing stuff, failed to deliver - was going to be the best sandbox mmorpg ever.
fast forward to today, now its a Survival game
You know nothing JohnDMKano and you didn't actually answered to his question!
The game didn't failed to launch! The game launched. Bugged, very bugged actually, yes! But it did launch. About the Savage Horizon , @Scorchien gave you the answer to that !
Cheers John!

When I payed there wasn't anything to look at. I don't remember Youtube at that point, there was no Twitch for sure. I never requested money back, because when I did purchase I knew the risk. However that doesn't change the fact I got scammed. A smart new owner could spin that perfectly to score points with their new fan base.
Maybe half the price and a small dragon? No rush, DnL thought me well. I use modern tools and always let a mass of nerds test games for me, before I decide if it's worth the purchase.

There's a slight flaw to your analogy. I was promised this
But all I got was this
While the vendor fled with my money never to be seen again.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one wondering that.

The only reason there is that much about it is because the MMORPG.com guys are some of the few that showed up for the press invites. IceAge said:

The launch of Dark and Light was after people long since gave up on it. The devs could barely get press to show up for the free walkthroughs, and the ones that press did show up for were riddled with bugs. I think the server crashed several times during the walkthrough I attended.
At the time DDO, LOTRO, Rappelz, BBO/VCO, PotBS, and Auto Assault - for reasons of interest, ad dollars, or fanbase - had the attention of most MMO gamers. The original DnL wasn't going anywhere. I'm guessing that this team is banking on most people not knowing about the previous abomination.

I'm absolutely sure they're betting on nobody remembering the original clusterf*ck. I don't think the original launched in China, so very few gamers there would know about it.

Except they are too completely different stores and owners. So not sure what you're point is.

The real question I have is how did you play this for 2 years? This game was so bad it was lucky if somebody lasted 10 minutes. With all the other innovative games out at that time (DAOC, EQ1, EQ2 coming, WoW coming etc) how could you have possibly played this for 2 years?
