    Sure, in TSW you're just a generic agent like many others around, and NPCs sometimes even remind you of that. Same in LotRO, you're not the hero, you just help the Fellowship from the background.

    Like the OP, I prefer to be the "average Joe" in a mmorpg.  Ryzom starts you out as a refugee.  After playing a year, you might feel like a competent adventurer, but there will still be mobs in the open world that can smack you down in three seconds.  I like a virtual world that never lets me feel safe or god-like.

    I agree OP!  It distresses me to play a Wizards of the Coast approved game only to end up being a "nice" drow.  You should not be allowed to make a game with dark elf player characters unless you have been forced to read and be given a test on comprehension of:  (1)Homeland, (2)Exile, and (3)Sojourn.

    Ya you can find quests that make you a hero but you dont need to...

    Go play Ultima Online. There are no heroes or villains per say. You'll just be a regular old player

    I agree OP!  It distresses me to play a Wizards of the Coast approved game only to end up being a "nice" drow.  You should not be allowed to make a game with dark elf player characters unless you have been forced to read and be given a test on comprehension of:  (1)Homeland, (2)Exile, and (3)Sojourn. 
    Can I play Jarlaxle? He occasionally do something not tottaly evil...

    But to be fair did I think the Icewind dale trilogy were miles better books.

    I do see a lot of scimitar wielding characters named "drisst", "Drizt", "Dri33t" and Drizzzt in my head considering your post. :)

    This is why survival games are doing so good..
    I dont think that is why survial games are doing so good.

    I think the reason is because in those games (not related to its genre) its empowering players to be able to physically do things they can not in other games.

    Just as one (I stress this...ONE of many) examples.

    When I played EQ2 I told my guild mates 'wouldnt it be cool if they had something we could craft as a team. meaning getting all the materials together would be too hard for one person and the whole team needed to do and in combat the device required the team to use...like a catapult'



    yes I know that is not a catapult and yes I know its only one game and no its not the only example of this and no I am not JUST refering to catapults only.

    I loved the Icewind Dale and Dark Elf trilogy when I was young.  My favorite is still Chronicles though.  I haven't read either in a long time.  My mind could change I suppose.

    When I played Everquest I made a Dark Elf agnostic warrior.  I went to the Wood Elf village (KoS) and killed Orcs until some of the NPCs were no longer kill on sight.  It also made me kill on sight in Neriak.  I didn't have the name Dri-zzt of any form though.  I got a bit board of playing as a warrior and stopped at some point.  There were to many other fun classes to try out.  I had a lot of alts.  

    This is one of the reasons having factions is fun.  It allows you to role play your character a bit if you have something in mind.

    There are also very few games where you can play as an evil character now.  I think they are trying to brainwash everyone into being good little stooges.  When I was growing up being a thief like character was very popular in games (swashbuckler).  Eventually they changed the name to rogue because it has a more combat oriented denomination.  You don't want any kids growing up thinking being a thief is a good occupation for their fantasy character.

In EQ2 my main was a swashie but he never got any raids so I also had a female drow dirge named "Razorbliss" that had an extremely long written background story which some thought was a bit disturbing... Of course a drow goth would cut herself, drink tons of red wine and sometimes be rather depressed.

    And yes, I lïke the faction mechanics of EQ 1 & 2 (even though running into a good ogre on a PvP server always was a bit unnerving the first seconds when I spotted them when I played good).

    That's pretty interesting.  I never wrote a background for my character.  It would be funny if you played an evil Drow female like you said and had some kind of deplorable background.  I remember that alignment was a huge thing in video games for a while.  KOTOR 1/2 were heavily based on being good or evil.

    In EQ1 I remember seeing an NPC Ogre sitting near one of the lifts.  I never found any backstory for that.  Perhaps they left it up to the imagination.  There was also a Dark Elf that stood outside the city of Qeynos.

    I prefer games where your actions dictate whether you are a hero/villain/badass/coward rather instead of the game itself declaring that for you.  Eve Online, UO, and some good MMOs on the horizon offer this.

    It should be noted they are two different types of games.

    One is more about the world as a world and the players just act how they act. The other is story based where the story has the protagonist and obviously the player is the protagonist.

    When I played Everquest I was getting walloped by gnolls,skeletons and the occasional zombie don't recall being special at all.

    An MMO where you're not the hero?  For most people, it's called Real Life.

    (although I suppose even there the average person can still be a hero to at least a few other people in a way)

    I don't think you were a hero in Everquest.  I remember starting out in Qeynos and I died all the time.  It took me a long time killing fire beetles, rats, bats, etc. to level up.  The only money I got was from selling various parts that dropped off the mobs.  Most people could only afford to buy cloth or leather armor.  Chain and Plate armor were really expensive.  Even the melee classes were wearing leather and using rusty swords through most of the early game.  There was also no story or path through the game that lead you to believe the game was centered around you.  Most people even had difficulty finding their trainers to buy new spells.  The Necromancer trainer was often located somewhere in the dangerous sewers and you had to go through fake walls and traps to get there.

    You can play that role in real life, but it's usually not in a fantasy world with magic.  Also there are things you can do in games that you couldn't in real life that are fun.  For me it's fun to feel powerless at the start of a game.  You tossed into a world in a weakened state and have to find tasks to do and start to build your way up.  That's how most heroes start out anyway and that is usually the exciting part.  Once you have achieved hero status the story often becomes less interesting.

    The Dark Trilogy is my favorite of the earlier Drizzt books, all the way up until the Sellswords
    I enjoyed the Dark Elf Trilogy a lot, but I think I prefer the Icewind Dale trilogy.  I like the battle between Drizzt and Artemis Entreri.  I also like the story of Drizzt finding friends on the surface world.  The Dark Elf Trilogy was powerful, but much darker in tone.  There weren't many fun moments.  On the surface someone always seemed to see that he wasn't evil.
