I am fit, I lift (I hate cardio, but I do it) I eat heaps of protein and I also eat as clean as possible. I like to hit the gym 5 - 6 days/week. I also mountain bike, do Yoga and some of the work I do is physically demanding as well. I know several gamers that do very similar things.
I get told all the time that I do not look like a gamer, to which I normally respond; What does a gamer look like? Gamers, much like the rest of humanity come in all shapes and sizes. Trying to say one is fat simply because they enjoy a sedentary hobby is beyond asinine. One of the reasons I work out is because of this hobby, I can't sit here for 4 - 6 hours an evening and not do something to keep my body healthy. I was also wounded several years ago and staying in shape helps relieve some of that pain.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

Wow, this thread has more fat legs than I thought it would have. git it... git it. My ass can stand to lose a few and then a few more pounds. Not due to the computer though. The TV has a lot of answer for also
Hmm. OP, I would say it's as varied as everything else in life. Boxing 3x a week, avid runner (run about 1000 miles a year on average), and hit the gym. Balance in life..heh, the woman and I don't watch much tv between all of our activities, and the kids multiple activities.
I will say, my gaming is probably only 10-20 hours a week though, tops.
Listen, I have documented my own gains and losses over 30 years. Here is what I know to be true, it has nothing to do with gaming but everything to do with understanding the human body.
5'11" tall, 18 years old in college weighing 160lbs with clothes on.
18/160lbs -Started boxing light heavyweight 21/172lbs -Played Semi-Pro Football 21-152lbs - Married 22-202lbs - Baby (Played BBS Dial-up)
The weight gains came from natural processes like sympathy pregnancy (age: 22). The weight losses came from having a balanced life (8hrs MMOG daily).
The truth is that the human body will naturally gain weight from 21 (Muscle) to 52 (Muscle loss). I made one valiant effort at 29 years old to purposely lose weight. It took a year of re-training myself from one bad habit, inactive lifestyle, then I was able to continue my journey.
I look bigger at 52 than I did at 21. I also look older (wink).
I am not a health nut nor do I exercise routinely. At 19, 29, 39 49 you should use that energy and momentum to get back on track with eating and a social life. You need less food and more social.
There is one trick that works for me... Taste foods instead of devouring them. After all is said and done, we really like the spices more than the substance. Unless you are talking about Jello, than change that one habit.
EVERYONE GAINS WEIGHT NATURALLY - so quit using the word FAT it is very UGLY and shows your lack of knowledge about both LIFE and METABOLISM.
I'm 200 lbs, and on a 5' 4" female frame, yes that qualifies as fat. But, I've been that same weight since 1999, before I ever played an MMO. I've been that same weight through periods of high exercise and low exercise, and regardless of how closely I try to stick to the low sugar, low starch diet that as someone with the genetic disorder behind PCOS/type 2 diabetes I am supposed to follow. But I grew up in an Italian-American household before anyone knew that eating pasta and bread all the time can be really bad for people with certain genes, it was considered to be a healthy diet and not recognized as a contributing factor to some families having a lot of difficulty not gaining weight and developing insulin-related problems. The genetic and chemical causes of type 2 diabetes are still not fully understood, and I was already at my adult weight and with all my cooking and eating habits fully formed before anyone even said the term "type 2 diabetes" to me.
I'm actually fine with my weight as long as other people don't harass me about it - I have way bigger problems in life to angst over.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story. So PM me if you are starting one.
I'm fairly thin and don't get more exercise more than an hour or two per day. A lot of that exercise is in the form of taking care of daily chores. I think this is better than many other exercises as it's not repetitive or high impact. I find sprinting better than running long distance. It builds leg muscle and doesn't give your the wear and tear. Working your arm and other body muscles in low impact high intensity exercises is good I find. It doesn't wear them down over long periods of time that way. Moving while stretching seems to be better than stationary stretching for me. The most important thing is your diet though IMO. You don't want to eat too much or have lots of processed food/sugar/fat/oil. You want a variety of natural things that will replace vitamins, proteins, and minerals while unclogging your blood stream. If your heart or stomach hurts it's likely you are eating bad food. That is a bigger sign that something is wrong than having fat. Fat/bloating can indicate something is irritated/sick in your body though.

I get the same. Folks can't seem to reconcile that I utilize my free time equally sitting on my ass doing nerdy things and working my ass off in the gym.
They think I must be hiking every weekend, an outdoorsman or athlete. And I was an athlete while in school, but I do not participate in amateur athletic leagues for any sport. And while I enjoy a good hike, it's also not my go to time-waster as it is best done with a partner/group in my opinion.
Defying the general public's stereotype is rarely beneficial, socially, but I think most gamers, if looked at objectively, still defy more of the stereotypical traits than they satisfy, generally. And, on the one hand, stereotypes carry a negative connotation; however, they are, simply put, evolution lightening our brains' workloads by making assumptions about someone based on "common knowledge" and their own past experience with others they associate with a person's habits, demographic or personality traits. So while it's disappointing, it is understandable that these stereotypes exist.
I mostly roll petite toons, but I have been considering creating a 'big boned' one.

It's kinda hard to do actually, depending on the game. I managed to make a female dwarf in WoW that actually looked pretty much like me. I rolled a heavy female in Xsyon but there were gameplay penalties attached to making certain body types. And those are pretty much the only two MMOs I've played that allowed non-skinny female characters. Some of the newer MMOs are more flexible about character body customization, but it's often considered an unnecessary development expense.

You've never really played ESO until you play as a large, muscular female Orc. I'm actually afraid of mine. Helgarth.
