I don't know exactly that forum this belongs but since it does have hardware issues this could be a good place.   Ok so here goes...

I needed to save a file on my flash drive from my email account.   So when i save the file it goes to some program called Onenote.  And after spending 20 minutes of looking everywhere I cannot for the life of me figure out how to simply transfer the file over to my flash drive.

Microsoft Edge-   I click on a file and it automatically starts downloading it without asking me if i want to run or save.  And it wont even let me choose a download location.

I saved a bunch of files into my flash drive.  When i copied them over to another computer it automatically placed all the files into a folder called "Pictures"   I cannot figure out to stop this from happening.

Cortana still pops up and does crap even though I have disabled her.

Getting random game suggestions on my start menu.

Nice to see microsoft invading my computer and making it do things I never wanted it to do in the first place.  Then making it so I cannot disable them.

If you are happy with another version of windows I'd say stay where you are.  Windows 10 is suppose to be better optimized but idk with all the extra hassle and them trying to lock you into using certain programs build by them.
Are you onto something or just on something?

So you're basically also getting ads from windows? Glad I stayed on windows 7. That's some serious bullshit right there.

I think they are trying to cloud everything.  Reading about that onenote software its suppose to help transfer files from ipad, pc , iphone using a cloud type system.  Problem is once its in that onenote its very annoying trying to first find where the file is located and second how to get it a usb drive.  I was forced to forward my email over to another account so i could get the file without onenote interfering.

I can't even remove onenote its like build into windows 10.

Onenote is just a program, if things "go to Onenote" it means you associated that file extension with onenote.

From Onenote you can save or export to whatever drive you want.

Seems to me like a user issue not Win10 issue.

Well do you care to read through 30 minutes of google searches to figure out how i can get rid of it?  Or where the freakin file dissapeared to?  Because i do not.

And before you quote the first 10 things that google suggested.  They did not work.

Hmm I use windows 8.1 but usually you can decide by right clicking then picking the default program you want to run something. If it picks a default program you do not wish like their reader which never kills itself making it a nuisance to have to kill the process before ejecting a drive I just switch to another like caliber.

I use caliber because it can read any format from the old ones that have no longer any programs that update epub ,lit, pdf, lrf or whatever it is a wonderful program.

Ive been using OneNote for years, since very early versions, so i am very familiar with it.

I only use it at work, I dont even have it installed on my home PC at all as there is no use for it there.

What type of file was this exactly? was this an attachment?

Give me more details and I can help you
I was on hotmail and saved an email to my hdd.  It automatically goes to onenote.  So i searched all around cannot find where the file is stored.  The only way I can access it is through onenote.  I can open and look at it but I cannot transfer it to the USB.  I can't even figure out how to do it.

Maybe its a matter of I just reinstalled it.  Its not the same as it was last year because I'm having problems I never had before.

Yea I'm using chrome now.  I prefer Internet Explorer but for some reason I cannot get it to run correctly on windows 10.  Firefox is an idea maybe I'll try it if i get mad at google.  Its bad that I cannot choose file locations with them either and rename files before they are saved.

I use opera and fox because google chrome adds the market thing which my malware program picked up and I removed and they kept reinstalling it. I think it tracks where I go and suggests ads and tailors my browsing so I decided to drop google.

I use no script for Firefox and for opera I have adblock and content block helper plus opera ad block. I just decided these two browsers were better.

Edge is much much better with ad block. It stops old crappy ads that take a long time to load. Once you do that it runs a bit faster than other browsers. Despite this I am used to Opera so I always use it.

Right click the file you want to open, mouse over open with. Click "choose another app" check make always and pick the program you want that file opened with. Done. As for your other problems, Im not having any of them and I have been using Windows 10 for 2 years. Also dont use Edge it sucks. Download Google Chrome. Its faster and has way beater features.

Windows 10, pile of manure. If games would move away from that awful platform I would dump it in a second. Games are all that keep me on it.

Off the top of my head:
Uninstalls one of my programs every major update (no, not pirated stuff).
Forces install of updates I do not want.
Uses my bandwidth to download updates I don't want to download.
Forces scan for viruses that I don't want. (this there is a fix for, just not got round to it yet).
Still has bugs from Windows 95 that are consistently reproduceable.
    Massively overpriced for ancient software.
Keeps changing my file associations every major update.
Keeps reinstalling garbage I don't want that I uninstall every major update.

That just literally off the top of my head.

    I loathe this crap now.

Can't figure out where the file is located.  Please don't bother trying to figure it out I spend enough time on that already.  Microsoft email forces you to use onenote if you wan to save the email and print it like shipping labels or bar codes.   I just forwarded it over to my att.net or yahoo account and save like a normal person.

I mean who freaking creates a document program that doesn't have a simple save option on a thumb drive?

It dose not do that. It asked you the first time you opened the file what you wanted to use or you saved it in that format and you associated it with one note. You may have wanted to select something else, but you did this. Windows 10 in this are acts no different then Windows 8 or 7. If its that much of a bother, uninstall Onenote.

You can disable everything on W10.

    Everything.

I work with W10 since they released it, I disabled every content upload feature at start.
Disable dlogging in with a Windows account and I preferred to have a LOCAL account.
I check EVERYTHING from time to time after every update to see if Microsoft hasn't enabled some stuff bhind my back.

Not ever did they do that.

Seems like OP needs a How To Use Windows 10 tutorial.

Local account far superior to the MS account when it comes to Win10, there are also tutorials on youtube for removing Cortana if anyone is unsure how to do it, i disabled mine and MS has never re enabled it, although i completely disabled Cortana so that the files are no longer there for Cortana to work.
When in doubt about how to do things in Win10 there are a shed load of Youtube vids that are usually able to show you how to sort it out. Yes, there are privacy issues with Win10, but most of them can be disabled if you take the time to do it.

Ok maybe its just my email provider.  I needed the image for the barcode that was included in the email itself.  I click on the save feature in the email and there is no option to change anything, it saves to onenote automatically.  I cannot find where it saved the file the only thing I can do is open onenote and see the file.  I cannot simply cut/paste the stuff because then the image is compromised.

I'm telling you its one screwed up program that never should have been invented.  It is the only document viewer that does not allow a simple save feature where you can choose location.

    You cannot uninstall onenote.

If you can disable everything in windows 10, then they should do that and release it as windows 11 :P
There is nothing new in windows 10 I want, there is nothing that has been improved, it is simply a step down from 8 which was a step down from 7. Aero is shit that was pushed on us to have touch screen functionality, it offers no benefits for mouse and keyboard use.
But hey it still beats OSX on every functionality (except command line), so I guess it depends what you compare it to :D

The problem I've had with W10 is their auto system of saving every file on my HD, every key I type, every thing my mic pics up, to their cloud.  Something about convenience?

      You can disable this.

Only one time has it switched on after a set of major updates I delayed for 2 months.  It would slow down my computer about every 30 minutes as it compressed and uploaded all that data to their cloud using up roughly 80% of my computer's cpu.  It trashed my game play when it kicked in.

Just one more step towards everything you do in your life being saved by computer and used against you when they feel like it?  Everyone is already using those "smart phones".

I was running dos commands on a tandy 1000 before you were pooping in diapers.  I never had a problem with operating systems from dos 6.2 all the way to windows 8.1

WIndows 10 is different and the amount of hoops necessary to jump through to disable a bunch of crap is unnecessary.

Windows 10 to people who date back to command line is pretty similar to how Object Oriented programming struck people who were used to standard programming before that became the norm.  It is kind of a forces you to think differently thing when you really don't want to or need to.
