New Player Guide?

PantasticPantastic Member Posts: 1,204

Is there a guide for new players somewhere? I tried the trial and lost interest, I'll probably give it another go once I'm over my Civ4 addiction. I got 2 different characters up to around level 9 or 10 then had no idea what to do next, I wandered around to several of the nearby towns plus teleported to shrouded isles and went clicking on every NPC and found zilch. No quests, an occasional bit of backstory but no pointers to something to do, roaming in the world there seem to be a lot of mobs in any given area some grey to me some 'don't touch', but nothing that looked of interest to me.

There is a new user tutorial that starts the game out.  I would suggest that you use that.  Other than that, then look for people with a yellow ring around their feet.  Those people have quests for you.  If you decide to get catacombs then just go into the first zone and there are a huge amount of quests taking you through level 1-15+

I've already figured out the basic commands and know what websites to go to to figure out things that aren't in the help like what each spec does. I looked for yellow rings on NPCs, but at the point I stopped no one had any rings showing when I walked by, and like I said I went through several cities in 3-4 overworld zones, plus 2 in the shrouded isles; no one was offering up quests. And FYI, around half of the quests that I have done came from NPCs with no rings, so I'm not really sure why they even bothered with them.

Also, are the catacombs even in the trial version? I thought they weren't, that you just get to use the graphics from that expansion.

Walking around clicking on every damn NPC gets old pretty fast, especially when none of them give you any quests or help with where you should go.

If you are really interested in playing DAoC then I suggest looking around your local bargain bins and seeing if you can get a "Epic" edition. Complete manual, all the expansions (I believe still), and is $10-$20 around here including a month of play.

No you do not get Catacombs as part of the trial.

As for no rings, my guess is either it is a bug, or you are taking quests lower than your level.  If you want to do quests below you level, the game will allow you to do it.  But if you want level appropriate quests then you only take the ones from people with the yellow rings around them.  The higher your level, then the bigger level range you have.  You will still earn XP for doing too low of a quest, just in terms of percentage for what you need to level it is really too low to bother with.

If you really want to test out the game, then you need to have Catacombs.  There are not enough quests without it.  The quests you can get suck in tems of XP/loot.  They tend to take far longer to complete.  There are some newer quests added to the old zones.  In fact they are working on adding some new content to the old zones over the next 2 patches.  But, most of what is there is very outdated.  If you prefer to XP by killing or quests, then Catacombs is really the best place for you.

One thing you can try to get decent XP is to go to named guards.  Then /say task.  You might be able to get a kill task.  It is great XP for just killing 1 mob.

Fine, if I'm getting quests below my level, then where would I go to find them of my level? I spent a few hours wandering to different towns, none of which had a single person with the yellow quest ring. I suppose I could look for groups, but there weren't any showing on the LFG tool and the ones I joined up were just sitting in one spot mindlessly grinding (animists set up shrooms, drag mobs to shrooms, mobs die fast). I don't know enough about the game yet to know what things to ask about groups for.

I don't really care about finding the best way to rocket up in levels, but when I asked before people said that the PVE in this game was fun. So far I haven't seen much of that, and I was hoping I was just missing something since all I could really see to do is to grind or get a group and super-grind, which just isn't appealing to me. Even your description of catacombs kind of puts me off, I don't really care about the loot/xp as much as about whether there's interesting stuff to do.

Things like the kill tasks don't really interest me, it's just a quest to walk around, find one particular mob, kill it with no challenge at all, then walk back and collect XP. I want to have interesting storylines, fights that take thought, real exploration, that sort of thing. Plus there's always the chance you'll get some really 'fun' task like the person giving you a quest to deliver a paper sack to someome in another town. Did I accidentally pick up Dark Age of Grocery Store Supply Operations? I just wonder what went through the designer's heads, maybe one of them was angry over a local store only having plastic that day.

    1.  The part of the game you are playing is 3+ years old.  Yes there are new things added, but not a lot.  Hence, by just sticking with the trial you are not getting the best the game has to offer.  That is probably the worse thing about the trial.

    2.  Interesting depends on perspective.  To me, PvE is not interesting and hasn't been for me in any game for really 4+ years.  Anyway you dress it up it is essentially the same thing.  Go to here, pick this up, or kill something.  Sure, there are nice stories and different twists, but in reality every game is the same, it is just dressed up differently.  To me, DAOC is no better or worse than most other games.  The only thing that makes it better for me is that there is far less farming/grinding than there is in other games.  Not sure what you are looking for so I won't be able to tell you if you will find it in DAOC or not.

    3.  If quests is what you are after, then you will most likely want to get the latest expansion, Darkness Rising.  The quests are great.  It is a great story, that takes you all over the classic zones.  The artwork is the best I have seen in any game so far for the new areas.

    4.  If you look at the FAQ up top there is a list of links at the bottom.  One will be for quests.  Click on that and then you can go select your realm.  It will list every quest, the quest level, the location to get it, and the walkthrough.  If you use that list and go find a quest and the person does not have yellow around the feet then it is a bug or something is wrong with your install.  I see yellow rings constantly on about any level toon I have.

    5.  Just a warning, if you expect to level mostly with quests without having catacombs/DR, then it will be nearly impossible.  If all you have is the trial, then your options for most of your XP will be kill tasks and camping.

Dude, go pay for an add for your site if you want to advertize here.
He's asking for help learning to PLAY the game not for someone to level a toon for him.
