Evening Folks,
So I'm shopping around for a new laptop and I need a little advice from you guys. Some basic facts for ya:
I've got a nice desktop, so I'm not lookin to replace it. I need a laptop for many reasons: school, work, ect.... However, I WOULD like to be able to play games on it, so when I'm away from my desktop I can still play around on my laptop.
I'm very computer literate, I built the desktop i'm using, I know what I need and what i want. I know what all the stats are. I know what the best video cards are and all of that kinda stuff.
What I don't know is much about laptop pricing. I guess what i need help with is that I need some advice on places to get the best deals on laptops via the internet. So far I've priced a bunch and my top picks are Alienware or Dell, and I was suprised to find that Dell can actually get me a better deal on a nicer machine. I've got about 2 grand to spend on this thing, I just want to make sure I'm getting the absolute biggest bang for my buck. Anyone know of any decent companies besides Alienware or Dell that I should check with before making the decision?

A laptop for work and school? In that case I would want something small and light, which isn't going to be good for gaming. Gaming laptops are generally big, heavy, and have poor battery life. If you have $2k then you can get a good laptop for gaming but I sure wouldn't want to lug that thing around.

I'd stick with Dell then. They are extremely ugly but cheap. I'm looking at their site and the $1,700 XPS M170 is a good deal.
Toshiba is a good place to look for a laptop.
No E-machines, but you probably already knew that.
I got a Toshiba and I have been pretty proud of it so far.

Been very satisfied with my Toshiba Satellite. Bought it October 2003 and no problems at all in two and a half years.
Intel P4 2.66 GHz 512 RAM. Only drawback is Graphics card is integrated and 32 MB so have to play high end games on desk model.
I would definetly buy another Toshiba.
Asus has some pretty good labtops from what ive seen, pretty good prices, and their W5Ae series looks nice too

I'll have to agree with the Apple MacBook Pro. With the new Boot Camp, you can now dual-OS with OSX and Windows. I have actually seen someone playing CS:Source on a MacBook. Couple that with the fact that Mac's are the most powerful systems for digital editing of any form, have virtually no spyware, and are very widely used in most professional settings (even Microsoft uses Mac's), and there's no way you wouldn't want a Mac laptop.
Here is more info on it.

Why would you want to dual boot OS X if there's nothing you use on OS X? When I first heard about Boot Camp I was excited and thought maybe I'd buy a Mac next. Then I realized everything I want is on Windows and I have no problems with Windows.

Hi, I'm aware Boot Camp means you can run both OS X and Windows. kthx
My point was who cares about booting OS X when the average person never needs to. So I boot up Windows to play games. Then I should boot up OS X when I want to browse the web? That's just stupid. I might as well just stay in Windows, not boot into OS X, and not buy a Mac.
People are buying into the Apple fanboys. They make people think they just have to try OS X out for some reason. The fact is Windows isn't bad and like I said, the average person has everything they want in Windows.

Hello again, your recommendation is a poor one. Do you fall into the category of Mac fanboy who says everyone should just buy a Mac just because? Yet they have no need for it. Not only is a Mac more expensive and inferior, it would also be more of a hassle.
