First of all I have to say that I love Eve it is my favorite MMO period. That said I can't stand this games training. It is effectively a penality for anyone new starting. No matter how much of a gamer you are and how much time you put into the game you can never reach or surpass someone who started a year before you.
I realize things such as implants and training the learning skills can help but all things equal you will never catch up in skills.
I dislike this because it deters many people from playing and prevents many people who quit and want to come back from doing so. Seems strange that CCP would do this, and not have a way to help new people or continuing players ramp up to an average level somehow.

Oh lord, again you cant catch up argument.
Ok lets start from the beginning; Lets say there are a total of 50 combat skills, if you max those out there is no way to get better in combat (which is true). You can train those skills up to 5/5 in about a year. Please dont forget that traning skills from 4->5 takes majority of the time and yealds same bonus as training skill from 1->2. But if you spend time training skills to 4 and not 5 you will need only 1/2 a year to train it up. So in 1/2 a year of play you are 80% as effective as any player there is out there, no matter how long they have played, and in 1/2 a year more you are just as effective as they are.
The only advantage people do have is that if they have played for 3 years and you have played for 1 year both of you equal in combat but he can also do industry or mining.
In EVE there are caps on fields but there are no caps on what you can do. This leads to people having to choose what they want to specilize in, so if you specilize in something you can become just as effective as people who have played for a long period of time. However if you want to be more vercitile it will take more time.
Aside form that it still depends on how much you play. In a lot of cases people have 10+ million skill points and have no cash to do stuff their skills allow them to do. So people who play a lot still get ahead of people who dont.

Except for fitting skills that is an entirely inaccurate statement. The ONLY skills that are necessary at 5/5 for effective setups are fitting skills to setup a ship to its maximum potential. Even then 5/5 skills do slightly more damage than 4/5 skills, but starting a secondary skill line with faster training times will often net a great damage increase.
Really, EvE just sin't the type of game where someone who is bad at planning, researching and mathmatics can catch upto someone who is.

but isnt it great that it deters people of this mindset and want very obvious instant gratification from a game?
Besides, even if I handed a nub a 25+mil sp character and a navy issue raven.. the first thing he would do is fly it in a mission and destroy it. Skill points just scratch the surface of what makes a successful eve player. You need to learn how to fit a ship properly and operate that ship and its fittings. You also need to know what sort of ship to bring to each situation and what fittings to fit that ship with for each situation.
Granted the 25+mil sp would give you that benefit, you would still be months away from really learning the game. Theres a reason why we take baby steps from frigate, to cruiser, to bc, to bs.

I agree. I've played the game since beta, so I do have some knowledge of the game, but the fact remains that you cannot really compete if you don't have the sp. Yes you can get equal in one area. If your new you can train up a few skills and specalize in one to get close to what a player who has more experience can do, but the game really is about versatility and that includes load-outs. If you are not as versatile your load-outs become known quickly and can be easily countered. If you don't change your loadouts from time to time you become a known quantity and an easy mark.

This game isn't solely about skills unlike other games. A player with 1m SP can beat a player with 30m SP with knowledge and strategy.
Your point about catching up really misses the whole point of Eve.
I've start playing this game 6 day ago, at first my whole point was
getting the biggest ship, the faster. Like i was planing to get a
Caracal in 3 day. But then, i'm about to join a PvP based corporation
and therefor realised that "The biggest, the better" and The more the
skill the stronger is realy not fact in this game ! It is written on a
book somewere in the game : "Knowledge is power", By that they don mean
"GET MORE SP !!" They mean get to know how thing goes in this universe
and you will be a master.
Ummm... no... the subject pops up enough that we don't need one. Wanna read more on the topic... go to the Eve-O forums and hang around for 5 minutes.
CCP has already stated that there will be no "newbie-net." No easy-peezy, kinda cheesey way of training a bit faster for a while. Eve is hard. The HARD kind of hard. Prepare yourself, or be damned.
p.s. - It's not really that hard =P
