Because this game hasn't gone the cartoony look, does this mean it will quickly look very outdated?

Right now I think the game is beautiful, but how long will it last? I mean Rift looked decent at first and now it looks like crap and lets not even go into detail with EQ2, but to suffice it to say I think we all know how that game looks now.

Do you think the developers can keep the engine looking relatively new with updates? This is a more modern MMO (built with modern technology for modern technology)

I think it'll be fine. Games look better now than they did in the past and games have tended to age better in recent years. Besides, RIFT still looks as good as it did on release as far as I can tell. What isn't great about it? Also remember that devs with money can make improvements to graphics if they want. I believe Aion did and other games have introduced improvements. It's not like it's impossible, it just requires dev time.

I suppose its subjective, but I just thought Rift aged badly. I remember it looking decent back in the day but maybe my eyes have been spoiled by other more recent games (such as this one)

I just am not understanding this stuff... I don't like the cartoony look of games like GW2, WoW and BDO.  I like the more realistic look of ESO, but I don't understand why the realistic look gets dated faster.  I hear peepz say that happens, I just don't understand why?

I loved WoW, but when I made the switch to ESO I was hooked by its play and look.  I have tried to go back to WoW for its last 2 launches just to see, but it looks more and more kiddie cartoony to me each time I go... I only last a day or so.

I am SO naïve about why realistic looking is bad?

Essentially, realistic graphics is an imperfection of reality. You may see the flaws and limitations because you know how the scene should look like.

Stylized graphics does not suffer of this as much since there is no comparison.

Uhm, why's BDO there? Graphics are pretty realistic, and even more than ESO I'd say.

About the whole 'going outdated' stuff. I think it's already said. Devs with money (Zenimax certainly has a lot to burn I think) can keep their graphics up-to-date. And looking at what the upcoming Morrowind expansion brings, I'd say ESO will be good to go on the 'realistic' looks for the coming 5 years...

I think "realistic" graphics have reached a point where they don't age quite as fast anymore. While resolutions will expand, as well as clarity. The overall picture will hold up longer. Games don't look like NWN1 anymore. Which is where most of these types of comparisons come from (older games).

This is true. But it's funny how mind works. I remember thinking omg it's almost like a movie when Max Payne 1 was released.

lol... BDO is already dated then because it doesn't match my mind's eye of what asia should look like... even though I've never been there.  the dev's blew it... they should have predicted how I thought it would look, now this has caused a glitch in my brain and reverted BDO to dated andddddddddddd cartoony.

besides, BDO has that other HUGE problem... it is a sandbox like EVE... so here on mmorpg.com and other forums I jump on the bandwagon and demand that all new coming mmorpg games are sandbox.  then, when I play them I finish the starting to tutorial and just stand there thinking, 'now what do I do... sandbox sux!'

so, I have concluded that I am not smart enough for sandbox, but too smart for cell phone mobile games... which places me smack dab in the middle of Average!  along with 7 billion other peepz on earth and WE have MASSIVE parties!!

I did not realise that just because BDO was made in Korea it has to look Asian.

I remember when I first laid eyes on Mass Effect 2 I was so blown away then when Mass Effect 3 came along I looked at Mass Effect 2 and was wondering how come I actually thought that looked so good. Not criticising the game but each time you see better graphics the games that tend to depict things more realistically compared to cartoony art style the realistic always suffers.

I really wonder where the it looks dated actually comes from? Console or older PC's, my newest pc i have the game cranked and compared to my 5 yo pc settings high, almost like two different games.

If i was on my 5 year box i may agree a little, on my newest box fully cranked I'd seriously wonder if we are even talking about the same game?

If you've been paying attention to HW development you'd know that the changes in the past few years have been incremental without the wild jumps in functionality we used to get with new CPUs and GPUs 10 or 15 years ago.

The look of games that results from what's possible with the latest HW innovations does not "age" as much or as quickly as it used to.

In ESO's last update they did a graphic improvement.  ZoS is not beyond doing what is needed to stay on top.  They are very committed to this mmo.  This is not a play for 10 years and drop it by the wayside for something better.  This is not a bingo-night take the money and run away corporation.  This is their baby and they are as in love with it as their fans.  It shows.

I was playing last month and felt like it looked dated already. Look at Rainbow Six Siege that just patched yesterday then look at ESO. On top of that though, WoW is looking dated now as well and it does have cartoony graphics.

Nah man ESO is far ahead of the curve. Years ahead.

3 years later you can still do side by sides with any new mmorpg out there and ESO wins by a lot.

Rift did look back then decent, true nevertheless it it look decent and... That's it. From technical point of view engine is and always have been dated garbage.

Also take a look at such LotRO - it indeed does feel dated when compared to the newest games such as TESO however does it look less beautiful? It's subjective but I wouldn't say that it does look any worse than TESO. Technology is much older but it still does not impact my reception of the whole audio visual part of the game that much as it would appear judging by technology used there. I suppose same will be with TESO in a few years.

Know the feels. I saw what mounts and gear looked like in ESO. Logged back into WoW and my first thought was wtf, how could I ever have imagined that any WoW gear or mount was impressive to look at?
Considering how much time and money I have spent chasing mounts in WoW and how many awful raids I have had to raidlead in my time for a tiny bit of crap looking gear, the realization hurt.. it hurt... so much. ^^

Just a nitpick, but BDO isn't supposed to look like Asia. Most of the game world is supposed to look like parts of Medieval Europe. If they ever release the lands where the Tamer is from, that's the only place in the game that's actually supposed to be Asiain.

People seem to throw around the "dated" label on anything that doesn't match their preferred art style.

Never understood the logic behind these so called arguments.

Good realistic graphics look great,of course over time as technology gets better the resolution will begin to look worse.
However cartoon graphics look horrible right out of the gate,so they are NEVER going to look good EVER lmao.

MOST games using cartoony graphics have resolutions that look to be around 260x260 texture sizes and awful looking single color palette textures to boot.Often times i cannot even call them textures because they are just simply one flat color lol.

So to answer the question,of course graphics will eventually look dated but will ALWAYS look better than cheap cartoony graphics.

Well, cartoonish games do look better after 5 years or more but it is rarely and issue until 5-10 years after launch (so somewhere between 2019-2024).

I have my doubts that they can update things beyond a certain point, adding effects is easy but to make an old game look new is a huge work and I don't think anyone succeeded with that in the past. It is usually not that more expensive to make a sequel instead, and that usually gets far more revenues.

But even cartoonish games starts to look really crappy eventually, you just can't stop time.

It is built with the Hero Engine, so yes, it will eventually grow outdated in appearance. Many complain about the animations already, and they have made tweaks. Unfortunately the Hero Engine has its limitation.
