Guild Wars really is free period. No additonal costs for patches and updates. The way they make money will be for expansion packs which retail the same a regular game. Unlike other expansion packs you don't need a previous version to play, although it is good to have them. Classes are somewhat limited (only five in the original with Factions adding 2 more later this month). You do however get choose a primary class and then can add a secondary class from the remaining ones left but only have a few of the traits of the secondary class. Examples are Warrior/Monk, Monk/Warrior, Ranger/Elementalist, Etc.
The community does seem a little immature however you can find actual gamers who do make the game fun. Guild Wars does have beautiful graphics and does improve upon most of the tedium of other MMORPGs. I highly recommend this game.
Just remember to give guild wars alittle time dont do what other people do and stop playing it after 1 our. its not the best game in the beggining but when you have learn a thing or 2 its going to get much much more fun.
1) yes it is very good (I might go as far as saying "awesome" 2) there is no monthly cost 3) there is no hidden costs (you pay for the game; then thats it) 4) class system is 6 balanced primaries and you can take a second on each character therefore there are 36 combos - all are very playable and skill system means your in for a real treat. 5) Community is one of the best I have seen since Ultima Online; very freindly and helpful for the most part - obviously watchout for the dickheads (there are some in every game) but 99% of the people are really cool.
- dont play this if you like a solo expereince. - factions is NOT a expansion pack - wait until that is released and buy that and you will not feel the need to buy anything else for a long old while
lol... there are actually 6 different professions, and 2 additional in Factions... just count... Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist, Necromencer, Mesmer, Monk... then in Factions... you get Assassasin, Ritualist.
by the way.... there will be an expansion release every 6 months... basically 1 free expansion... then follow by a retail expansion in month 12....
the retail expansion will always be released on day that Guild Wars first release the first chapter, which is April 28th. It's basically a big big present for GW players on GW's b-day lol

Your source of information for this *bs* being?
There are no "expansions" in GW, neither retail nor free. The Sorrow's Furnace update in September 2005 was simply something free to promote the game. ANet says there will be stand-alone (but linkable to the previous) chapters, roughly every 6 months, that will cost about as much as the original game.
