I bought a very cheap shack at Elden Root for 45k gold because it's an area I go to all the time for undaunted dailies and other stuff. I can usually find a guildmate there to port to for free but if there isn't one online, I can port to that shack for free when I'm in the middle of nowhere.
I made that my primary residence (I also have the free room at the inn in Vulkel Guard) and gave access to my guilds so they can also use that as a handy place to port whether I'm online or not.
Worth the 45k.

you should be able to port there even if he's offline..
The "why" i wanted to think about, as it turns out there are two reasons why.
The first reason was purely aesthetic and the environment sounds when in my court yard, also it's smack dab in the middle of my favorite zones in the game. Nutshell, i liked the place.
Second is amenities, i did think about amenities, but wasn't my ultimate deciding factor. Now using the place i find it much more of huge bonus then i thought it would be, could be a deciding factor for others though.
Back when i played EQ2 the end of the night I'd always zone home and clean up... I'm doing that again and i love it. The end of a play session i zone home, repair, clean up inventory, sell junk, train my horse and log out all cleaned up and ready for the next play session.
What i ending up loving is the wayshrine is literally right outside your door, so is a horse trainer, as well as merchants and guild shops. The cherry on top is that two steps around the corner is a dolmen. Since i sub it's rare i need a bank and is the only thing not there, but that's an easy wayshrine jump away if the need arises. However knowing the wayshrine is right there I'll at times zone home (for free) to make a quick jump instead of hauling back through a zone to the nearest shrine.

That's a nice one. In fact, it's my favorite right now (still haven't seen all of them). It's got a beach, huge outside area, and the house itself is also pretty large. It may be better than any of the three mansions, but that's subjective.
Seems like my requirements are narrowing down to: (1) must have large outside area and (2) ocean area preferred.
