Currently, there is only one playable race, and Factions will be the same. But there have been rumors as to the addition of other playable races in later additions.
Don't quote me if you don't feel you can trust me (and there's no reason for you to trust me), but I noted that Gaile Gray mentioned something about this not all that long ago. There is a topic at Guild Wars Guru with a chat log, and there's probably one over at GWOnline as well.
Yes currently you can only play as human but for most people that is enough...there is still lots of variety in PvP though... I have also heard rumors of multiple races in chapter 3 or later on but not sure yet.
I read in an interview that GW chapter 3 was the "unicorn" chapter...so expect the first new race to be...um...unicorns (not what I'd pick...but FAR better than another Elf'n'Orc game). Personally, I think the game doesn't need non-human races, at least in its current form. We'll see if the expansions change things enough in order to make other races necessary/justified.
Actually Factions is sort of introducing a new race, in a way.
Currently everyone is human. In factions, everyone will be human still. The difference is though that now when you create a character, you can decide whether they will be from Ascalon (the traditional look) or from Cantha, allowing your character to have a different, more asian feel. While you will still be human, you'll be a different kind of human and look different from the other type of human.
Nothing too spectacular like elves and ogres, but it's something to start with.

The correct answer would have been while there are many races, only human is playable by the player however they can team up with other races when they go out into the world as allies or in their team.
