The Ship of Heroes guys are moving along with production pretty rapidly these days, and asked us to share with you a quick look at the game's work-in-progress combat. We've already seen character creation, so this shows the game in action at an early stage. Readon for the video and an interview with the team about how SoH will hold up to City of Heroes.

I think the "Rain of fire" animation could use a bit of visual boost. It's kind of underwhelming. Other than that, game looks cool.

This looks not too bad. I was watching a number of videos on COH and remembering all the fun that game had ... I hope they take a page from COH and make this game just as good or better.

CoH was one of the best MMO's ever. I am so sad that it is gone. :( I would love more than anything to be able to play again.

Interesting indeed. Combat doesn't look like what I'm looking for but the animations are nice so far.

"What ties it all together is the bright, optimistic mood." AH! YES! Sweet music! One of the things that many people maybe didn't even notice, but I believe it was a major part of what made CoH feel like a place I wanted to go back to! Having bad guys around doesn't mean bad lighting or bad weather. They could always have dark, spooky areas (utility levels full of pipes and conduits? Abandoned science labs?) the way CoH had Dark Astoria.

I'm not surprised the movement and animations are still a bit off at this stage, and it sounds like they've got all the basics in place.

The power sets and distinct archetypes sound promising. I like to see some variety and overlap, but not so much that the distinct roles get lost. My mental controller was pretty lame, but could still be a big help on the right team.

I hope the enemy aliens mean that the hero creator will include aliens. I think they said something about that earlier -- and robots, too. Insectoid aliens? FURRIES? Loved playing cat people and heroes based on favorite cartoon "funny animals."

The citizen getting hit and the celebration dance at the end suggest some interesting possibilities, but I wonder if they will be fully realized. It would be great to have some basic AI for the NPCs, maybe only kicking in when a hero was near. Also great to use them for non-combat hero roles/duties, such as controllers moving crowds away from danger, force field users keeping them away or protecting them, and healers healing injured NPCs. Asking too much? Too hard to score?

I never cared much for points and points-based leveling. It would be nice to see some innovation in that/those areas -- or is that just me?

Obviously the animations are gonna need some work, and I'm sure that'll all be handled in time. Still, seemed very cool and I am interested.

As of right now this looks terrible. I'm hoping for the best because CoH was my fav MMO. But as it stands now I'm going to forget and hope one day it's released and looks better.

Perhaps, but so far it does look better than the other COH tribute mmos like Valiance and Titans. Its a shame these guys just couldn't team up together to make one big game

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

Why was the hero moving when the enemy fire was auto targeting?

I must be missing something, this looks absolutely horrendous. Nothing in this day and age should be launched looking like that, talk about a general waste of energy, and effort - there is no way this will appeal to enough people to be commercially sustainable.

While it won't be a huge hit, I'm sure they have their target market, mostly the people who played CoH/CoV and want another super hero MMO.

I mean obviously there is a small market to go after. Plenty of other games like this in the works.

I very much do want a new super hero MMO.  I like DCUO.. I liked CoX..  I'd like something more updated, sure... but... nothing coming out has really piqued my interest.  I don't like the constant rehashing and this new premise of remaking something like CoH just updated.  The market is very different now.
