but otherwise Starport is probably the closest you are going to get to a "free" game. But otherwise when we talk about "free" MMORPGs, the one thing you need to have is low expectations, VERY low expectations.
And he's right, Starport seems to be the best out there, either you pay or pray someone will release the game you want for free. Because as far as I know it does not exist.
Wait for age of conan... that game will answer all of your prayers. Real time combat, mounted real time combat, castle sieges, player based formations, 3 races, a lot of classes specialising and coalition(hence the need for good formations)
@freebirdpat I doubt GuildWars is the kind of MMO he's looking for. It's your standard "toggle attack mode, throw a few skills and wait til target dies".
I suggest :
Not free : - Phantasy Star Online : Blue Burst (PSO:BB) - Phantasy Star Universe (PSU). (has yet to be released.) check this trailer
Free : - Maple Story - website: www.mapleglobal.com It's 2D Scrolling (cute if you like this kind of graphs).
And I wouldn't be too excited about Age of Conan (see DDO, Dark & Light...) it always sounds good on paper but you never see half of what it promises on release.

It's going to be some awesome...
Is AoC actually going to be real time combat? From what I gathered it seemed more like what SWG originally was except more advanced. So like you pick which area you want to strike with different moves but it's still combat queues and auto targeting.
I'd love to be proved wrong but the videos convince of it that much more with the 'you strike, I strike' combat animations.
My recommendations would be like has been said Darkfall, The Chronicle, Roma Victor, and also Twilight War or maybe Huxley if you don't mind that 'Guild Wars' instanced field of MMO.

So what is "Real Combat"?
This is our revolutionary multi point melee system. This unique aspect of this system is that you swing your weapon where you direct it. This system will let the players direct, and combine, the swings of their weapon to create fancy, brutal and effective slashes and thrusts, or combine them in combos or special attacks that do additional damage. You should really “feel” the power of your character when you fight, feel the power of each and every blow.
"Real Combat" is easy to learn, and allows for a very different experience to both the slow studious nature of RPG combat and the ‘twitch’ nature of a first person shooter. When you pick it up the first time you might not even notice it as you happily slash and thrust away. With experience you might see certain attacks swinging better together. As you learn to string it into combos you become a dancing machine of brutal death. The same multipoint system is true for ranged combat and spell casting. In both cases the Real Combat engine allows you to string hits or spells together to form new fantastic effects.
I suppose it is a form of real-time combat. The way i think it that you have your swingarm, and a point. Then if you click he will swing his sword or whatever towards that point. Then if you change the point to the other site of your target, he will cut again. But I can't be sure though. It just sounds so interesting!
The chronicles of spellborn uses a sort of realtime combat system as well. Although the game still uses abilities with cooldowns, it has no target locking or auto attack. You have to aim at enemies to hit and it will always hit as long as you aim right. Ofcourse, its possible to evade both melee as magic attacks. Classes in the game partially determine the speed with which you move, which means that, for example, a rogue will be moving faster then a warrior which should make up for his lower health.
Pay me a monthly stipend and I will respond to these threads with much vigor and gusto. Try <second rate MMO> it will satisfy all of your gaming needs.
How would you implement real time healing? Without the turn based system, healers become obsolete or fight a losing battle.

It won't be free.
It will be incredible though.
Isn't that the same game (or similar to) as Conan the Barbarian? If it is, I have very LOW expectations. That game got the lowest rating I've ever seen.
Free Ones- Maple Story Thats it. The problem with a realtime combat game is the same as a FPS game. Hit registry. If you are controlling every swing of the sword its alot more data for the server to chug. Thats why the existing ones are primarily instanced. Dungeons and Dragons Online, and Phantasy Star Online. Still you won't be finding anything like a Fighter mmo game until the networks in the US are upgraded to what the Korean Network is like now, which won't happen for a few years since it isn't a priority for the US.

There is a game in development called: The Chronicle
It will have the kind of FPS twitch-style combat you are looking for I think. Check it out at: www.mmocenter.com/v2
Enjoy
