This week our own Tim Eisen dives into CSE’s monthly Dose of Design from the biggest newsletter in the business. Here’s an ominous clickbait teaser, things get dark.

I encourage you to think about CU and for that matter the crowdfunding of anything as the supporting of an idea. You put your money towards an idea because if the crowdfunding event is successful, you have a chance to see that idea come to fruition. Warning: not all crowdfunding events will be successful.
1. Does CU seem to be on the path of successfully implementing the idea many of us crowdfunded? Yes.
2. Is CU going hit the projected crowdfunding dates as advertised? No
I care much more about the idea and much less about the dates.
Ive played a testing fase of cu.. and this game very VERY long out still..
I dont mind tho, not in hurry.
people are willing to wait for a good game.. dont rush it i would say

The first time they've shown their work on the prototype of the engine was back in April 2013. We'll see how it pays off once they show some footage of large-scale battles.
The guys at CSE are not only creating a game engine from scratch, but they are developing brand new ideas for mechanics and gameplay. It takes an incredible amount of skill to do all these behind-the-scenes type jobs, but they are absolutely critical to the success of a game like this.
So yeh, building an engine from scratch and then iterating over these core mechanics was always going to take a long time, but it is 100% worth it in my mind. Once those are all in place and working, then the "easy" stuff can get done - all the artworking, 3d modelling, sound effects, animations etc. All that still takes skill, but the processes and tools are well documented and their is a larger pool of talent available to do the work, so easier to staff up for it.
mmorpg junkie since 1999
then at the end i saw you wanted to know what year the game would be released. less ramble i suppose. at the beginning of the article you talk about ads. then the second paragraph is about cheez its. ok ads and cheezits for the intro of the article which is one of the most important sections. i thought the article was going to be about how camelot unchained needs to advertise better. then the cheezits came in and i realized i wouldnt get anything out of this article.
well, and MJ doesn't care about the "majority" gamer, those are pve people. that is why his games actually tend to have good pvp
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
You are right about that Tim! And thats why I'm gonna drop a few lines of the supermegahit "Mmmbop".
Mmmbop, ba duba dop

I can't remember everything i was going to comment on but i'll try a couple.
Yes open candor is good but it really says more about how we are shocked by it more than expecting it.Even still a salesmen will NEVER tell you the whole truth,it is in their better interest to sort of beat around the bush or only tell you the good things.
Someone mentioned ideas>dates.I strongly agree, the design is far more important than dates. However then we have to debate weather the ideas are worth waiting for and even then how good will those ideas be implemented?Like a great idea sounds great on paper but often times i see great ideas just look so bad in game.
Lastly,i think i mentioned it elsewhere but i don't remember. Why not just pay Epic the 5% royalties and save years as well already have some great tools to work with?
Just like most detest advertising,i detest most game designs i see now a days.30 years ago i envisioned great things for gaming,i barely see any improvements at all.Everything is a mixed bag, might get better graphics but weaker systems,or deeper systems with crappy graphic/animations.We might get nice art but cheap 2d structures instead of 3d.
Something said really stuck with me.When SE was asked originally years ago about redoing ffvii, they said it would be far too costly to try and do a game made 20 years ago with modern standards. So likely explains why we have not improved much over the years, devs are trying to recreate the old days but need to cut many corners to do it.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
CU devs are aiming for battles many times larger than that.
That's one of the reasons why they're building an engine in-house. It's not something unusual: the large majority of the big MMORPGs run on their own custom-built engine. Nowadays indie studios usually pick Unreal, Cry and Unity because it's less costly in time and resources. But they likely won't achieve anything close to what we'll get in CU.
