No, there's nothing that can erase your memory and give you the same experience again :)

WoW has evolved to better serve the current players. You can certainly find chalenging content, but only when you get max level 110. Leveling your char is faceroll nowadays.

I haven't played WoW since vanilla, but back then, winning and losing was almost entirely about whether your level and gear were good enough, with a smaller dependence on what the player actually did than nearly any other MMORPG I've played.  I'm not sure what the right word for that is, but neither "hard" nor "epic" seems appropriate.

That might erase the memory but it will probably change his experience as well. ☺️
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

I'd settle for a new game with fresh new content and the same kind of gameplay as in old WoW. :)

I recommend Elder Scrolls Online, Guild Wars 2, or FF XIV: ARR, just off the top of my head. They're pretty WoW-like and there are reasonably deep pockets attached to them, plus they have pretty decent graphics. I'm currently playing ESO, but I've played both of the other two and maxed out characters on GW2. They all have their charms and limitations, but that's where I'd look first based on what you've said so far.

LOTRO would be the best bet op... you can try it free

My recommendation would be either ESO or GW2.  Those are both fairly light experiences that seem to fit well for WoW players.  They aren't the same by any circumstances, but I felt that they were good companions.

You can play Vanilla Wow on private servers for free, their packed with people, and yes they run fine and so little bugs you would never notice !.......... Don't let anyone tell you different.

Ya know how old people talk to you and say things like "Movies today are terrible, they should go back to the good ol days with actors like Dick Van Dyke"

When you talk about WoW being the only game that was any good, its exactly how you sound.

Don't get old man. There's 1000 new games out there. Stay young with us! =)

As Tuor7 mentioned ESO is a good choice.  The one nice thing they have done with the One Tamriel update is make all content relevant.  You can't out-level a zone anymore and group content can't be simply facerolled due to higher level/better gear.  The entire leveling process is very different when no matter how fast or slow you go the content keeps pace with you.

I've not much experience with it, but I keep hearing how challenging Wildstar content is at end game.  Yes, the size of the community has constrained it which has been argued ad nauseum.

Unfortunately, Blizz has made both WoW and Diablo very end-game focused such that the leveling is trivialized.  Unless you want to raid which can be very challenging at the Heroic level and higher, there just isn't much challenge outside of Mythic+ dungeons.

I'd like to see Blizz do the same as ZOS did with ESO and make it so you could do Mythic+ dungeons from any of the available dungeons.  With what 100+ dungeons from all of the expacs, there certainly would be a lot to challenge those who like the Mythic+ system.
What every dev/pub should stand behind: "We're committed to creating a fair playing field for all players. You cannot gain gameplay advantage by spending real money in [INSERT GAME NAME]."

I'm currently in gw2 and really enjoying it. If you're into challenging gameplay, you may want to give ff14 a shot. I've always found that one to be unapologetically difficult at times lol

For players that are fine with the trinity + tab target system FFXIV is a good choice. Most of the content is pretty easy for MMO veterans, but the endgame raids are similar to Mythic (called Savage in XIV).

Pretty sure that Wildstar content has been nerfed a long time ago, it's still challenging, but not THAT challenging anymore.
