Hoping this will be the game...

I am really hoping for a game for me to use to swear off WoW. Now, I'm not an avid Warhammer fan (never played the tabletop game), but I did play 40k: DoW for the PC, and really enjoyed it. I'm hoping this game will follow en suite, and so far I'm not disappointed.

I've been looking for a game that is good enough for me to leave WoW for (I actually am an avid Warcraft player though). I was hoping before that it would be Dark and Light, but I left that game because of my experiences in certain aspects of the game (I say no more). I like games that can be expansive, yet fun.

I love WoW, don't get me wrong, but I've played for over a year now, and it's getting a bit linnear, and I'm looking for something on the same idea, but with more depth, even community if possible. I'm talking town sieges, PvP, and all that bloody warring, but also a social aspect, like housing, and guild halls and the like.

But anyway, I'm getting off topic here. As for keeping my eye on this game now, I'd like to know some things. I'd like to know general facts about the game as it stands now, but more importantly, if I'm going to get absorbed into this game, I'd like to know some background info on the Warhammer world. I know very little. I know there are Orks, Imperials, and Chaos, and that they hate each other, and that Orks are a more primitive, chieftain style culture, and Imperials are pretty much Roman style rulership. Not much else though. Please lemme know some background, or post a link to a place where I can find that myself.

  Thanks!

"Time.." I chuckled "I hold no secret to time, though it's mystery puzzles me. Deny it's existence and lie to myself not with hopes of a quickened pace."

Warhammer: Age of Reckoning is actually a different world than the one shown in Dawn of War.

It's more primitive (swords and cannons- Renaissance era) rather than futuristic.  You'll recognize the tone, though; the Empire is a bit less facist than the Imperium, but no less unhinged.  Witch Hunters burn supposed 'heretics' in small towns, and Chaos cults tear at the seams, practicing nefarious acts in the dark slums of devoloping cities.  Chaos will be familiar; rather than traitor Marines, though, adherents are secret cultists, vile mutants, northern barbarians, and heavily armored knights drawn from all the ranks of Man.

Check out the Games Workshop site for more info here.

Heh, sorry, got busy the past few days. Ok, so what I want to know is:

What is the background of Warhammer? Why are they at war? How did the universe of Warhammer come about?

Are there any gods or organized religions within Warhammer? Are they the cause of said war?

How should I feel towards the different factions? I.E., Are Orks really evil, or just viewed as such? Does the world pressure me to view a certain way towards a certain faction?

Are there any backplots? Such as secret treaties, secret factions, backstabbings, etc.

I like to get a feel for the game universe, so please fill me in as much as you can.

What is the background of Warhammer? Why are they at war? How did the universe of Warhammer come about?

I'm not entirely sure how the world was created, but it was initially settled by an advanced magical race called the old Slann, who engineered several of the races and mastered dimensional gates. Eventually the dimensional gates broke down, and opened up portals to the Chaos (demonic) dimensions, where warp matter (magical radiation!) seeped through corrupting several of the races, and now most races are in constant battle towards the demons and corrupting effects of Chaos and its gods.
Most of the Warhammer game takes place in "The old World" which is a slightly modified map of Europe, with different cultures in their respective places (The humans of the Empire live in the central part).  The Orcs come from the east and south, Dark Elves from North America, High Elves come from what could be considred Atlantis, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Chaos come from Antarctis (Or Arctis.. whichever is north).

Are there any gods or organized religions within Warhammer? Are they the cause of said war?

Yes there are, all races have a number of gods and these are indirectly the cause of these wars.  It's not religious wars per se, but since the gods decides how a good (inser race here) is, it often puts them at odds with other factions.
Orcs worship Gork and Mork, two .. uh.. orcish Gods who praise strength and violence etc.

The two main imperial faiths are Ulric and Sigmar (There are several gods, but these two are the ones venerated above the others), who are constantly vying for power over the empire, but there is a peace, shaky at best between the cults which was instituted by Emperor Magnus the Pious rather long ago, without this, the Empire would most likely fall into a civil war. And several, more fanatic (usually in the cult of Ulric) always tries to get the hostilities to flare up. The cult of Sigmar is less inclined towards this, mostly because Sigmar is the Patron Saint and founder of the Empire.

Dark Elves worship Khaine, the lord of Murder (amongst others?), I'm sure the names gives you some hints on what he's about, I don't know too much about him.

Dwarves and Elves have their own gods, which I do not know about.

The forces of Chaos swear themselves mainly to five different gods, which are constantly infighting between eachother, but most have the same goal.  The corruption and destruction fo the Old World, which Warhammer takes place in. Most of  the Chaos forces live in the Northern Chaos Wastes, but the cults have infiltrated more or less all parts of the world.

Tzeentch is the chaos god of change and magic, I'm not quite sure how he goes about his business, but I believe it is through standard infiltration and corrupting "weak-minded" humans, as well as often corrupting magic users (Magic users draw upon the matter of chaos to power their spells).
Khorne is the blood god, the chaos god of war. Your standard gung-ho god whose followers cry out for blood and storm forward in frenzied bloodlust.
Nurgle is the god of rot, decay and pestilence. He corrupts his enemies with diseases and plagues.
Slaanesh is the prince(ss) of pleasure, who draws upon the lusts of every man and use these to corrupt them to his/her dark schemes.
All gods do infiltrate the society of other factions to some degree, but some more than others.
Also there is Malal, who is a renegade chaos god who does not aim to corrupt the world (at least for now) but dedicates himself and his followers solely to destroy the other Chaos Gods.
There are also Gods of law by the way, who are in no way to be confused with "good" gods, these gods oppose all change in the world.

How should I feel towards the different factions? I.E., Are Orks
really evil, or just viewed as such? Does the world pressure me to view
a certain way towards a certain faction?

It depends who you are I suppose, but from an imperial point of view (The average human), Yes Orcs are evil, they were the scourge of man until Sigmar united the Empire and stopped them. Dwarves are stalwart allies to the Empire, Elves are generally mistrusted by the populace because they are.. Different.  Dark Elves, Don't even know if the average person fo the Empire is aware of their existance, but they are evil as well. Chaos is the current scourge of the Empire, every sane imperial distrusts them immensly, and knows that handling anything related to Chaos could very well be a quick way to the Pyre at the orders of the Church of Sigmar. But many other imperials worship the gods of chaos for boons promised to them, or general insanity.

Are there any backplots? Such as secret treaties, secret factions, backstabbings, etc

As far as I know, there are none.  Except the ones in classic fantasy lore and described here. Chaos Powers at war with eachother as long as they're not united in a grand crusade, Dark Elves vying for power within their society. Orc warbands trying to best eachother constantly, etc. And Of course the barely contained religious infighting in the Empire.

I haven't played any warhammer computer games, however, I've played the paper game.  What I'm hoping is this game to be completely fucked up and gorey.  I'm so tired of polished beautiful games with beautiful characters.  Hopefully, it'll be somewhat like the roleplaying game.

Yeah, this game will be successful. All it needs is 1 million subscribers at $50.00 a pop or $79.95 for the collectors edition and with a monthly fee of $14.95.

This game is going to be a strong contender. Especially after that excellent review with the game company and what this game has to offer.

Mark my words or you can tell me, I told you so if I am wrong.

IMO it will be the #1 mmorpg game of 2007 if it is released on time (of course)

I remember the old hype of WoW when everyone was playing SWG in the days. Ebay accounts for WoW were going for a pretty penny, I expect the same with this game, especially as much publicity this game is getting, way before its release next year.

We should know if this game rocks when it hits Beta for selected peeps out there.
